12 weeks post TKR and Nerves are waking up?????

Posted , 10 users are following.

Wow.  This whole recovery thing is something.  I was doing so well, way ahead of expectations.  At 10 weeks I felt great.  Even over did it once.  Now the nerves start waking up.....sometimes the bottom of my foot hurts so bad I can hardly walk.  I just rest a bit then up and walk.  Now having aching in thigh and sometimes calf.  Saw surgeon yesterday...he said it is like your arm falling asleep.....when it starts waking up it hurts bad....but then all the sudden it is OK.

any advise out there????

I'm 10 weeks post TKR and lateral repair and am experiencing exactly the same especially at night when all you want is a good nights sleep !! I find massaging with bio oil helps to relieve the pain. All the best

Thanks Jo.  I will try that.  I do usually rub my legs and feet every night, but I have not used the bio oil.

I think we all have experienced similar things!

When something is different, I take my temperature to see if something different is happening in my body. I am always looking out for possible infections!

I stretch and exercise and even ice although my TKRs were done 11 months and 6 months ago.

I get different pains from time to time. Sometimes it is nerves, sometimes muscles, sometimes strange twinges. The body has been through A LOT! As long as there's no infection or really bad sudden pain, I just keep moving and hydrate well. It seems to pass until the NEXT weird pain arrives!

Thanks Cheryl,  guess I just wanted to be sure it was a normal thing.  I felt so good at 10 weeks that this really thre me for a loop.  Now I know to expect the unexpected.

I discovered that recovery was DEFINITELY NOT a continuous event when dealing with Knee Replacements! Things got better, but there always seemed to be rough days mixed in with the good days. I tried to analyze it, figure out what I was doing wrong to cause bad days. After awhile I just took each day as it came. If it was a good day I went shopping or worked around the house, cut the grass etc. If it was a bad day I made hot tea and wrapped up in my polar fleece throw and read or watched TV.

It's nearly a year since my first knee replacement and about SEVEN months since my second one. I forget about my knees now most of the time. I have arthritic shoulders, back, and elbows, but my KNEES are GOOD!

I think if I can replace more of my body parts, I will feel 21 again!😁🙌😉🙋😊😄😁

Thanks Cheryl, I know it will be OK in the long run.  At least this pain is different than the bone on bone before surgery.  I also know that for now my right knee is good.  You are funny....maybe we could all be remade and feel younger.

      thanks,

Oh, for SURE about that BONE-ON-BONE pain! With THAT my knees would hurt, and then this buzzy feeling would start up toward my hips and from my knees down toward my ankles.

My neighbor who had 2 knees done at the same time said that before her surgeries she would also get dizzy and nauseated as the PAIN would increase and increase some more.

My aunt who had multiple replacements over the years would say at family reunions that she couldn't WAIT for her next replacement! She had both knees, both HIPS and one shoulder replaced. She was looking forward to shoulder #2! She would say that when it rained or snowed her REPLACEMENT PARTS felt great. Other body parts...not so much.

Both sides of my family have Osteoarthritis. It is a NASTY disease. I'm glad replacements are available, though.

I hope you are having a good day!

I am right there with your neighbor.  I would feel nauseated from the pain also.  And I agree Osteoarthritis knows no age requirements.  That is why I had surgery....I also have it in the other knee, but it is not really bad yet.  And as you know Cheryl, I have it in my shoulders, neck and hands also.

i agree with your auntie also....at least I do not ache when it rains now.  Lol.

I've had the nerve pain also - it is painful.  Would your surgeon or family doctor script out Neurontin or Lyrica for the nerve pain.  The neurontin really helped me a lot.  It's meant for neuropathic pain.

Darkas, saw your message and email surgeon...he doc gave me Gapabintin it is also for neuropathic pain.  I start that tonight.  Thanks for the heads up.

Hope that helps you!  Gapabintin is the generic version of Neurontin.  I needed less pain meds while on that plus I slept better.

GReat...looking forward to sleeping all night sometime in the near future.  I had stopped all pain meds around 8 weeks.  But the last 3 nights I have taken Tramadol.  I will skip that tonight.

What dosage of the Neurotin did you take? I'm taking 300 mg. once a day and it helps some, but doesn't stop the nerve pain. Would another 300 help or would that be taking too much?

      Thanks, Betty

Hi Betty - My family doctor had me start out at 300 mg at bedtime for a week then added another 300 mg in the morning so was taking 2/day.  300 mg is actually a small dose but best to titrate up on dose slowly so you get use to it.  Can take it up to 3 times per day.  Sometimes 600 mg three times a day is needed but the minimum dosage you can be on the better.  300 mg twice a day was sufficient for me.

      Betty,

i also was given 300mg.  I am to take 1 in the morning and 1 at night.  It is a low dose of the medication.
