Hello all, for everybody still waiting/thinking about having the Op I'm here to say
Go for it, I've waited 5 years and was at the stage I could barely put 1 foot in front of the other
But 17 days in and I'm walking comfortably on my 2 crutches and that awful dread of putting weight
On my hip has gone, after reading on this forum how well some people are
Doing I think I need to up my walking etc as at the moment I'm just tottering
Around the house.
Good luck to anybody schedueled for the Op and for anybody still thinking about it GO for it you won't regret
It. X

Take life by the horns and get out but you must do the excersises two or three times a day, the bed ones are the most important, pressing the legs into the bed really strengthens them.
Keep in touch. Ian.

Hi Ian and everyone.
I am 9 months post op! I was doing so well to about week 8. Went to all the physio, took my walker everyone to get in walking time. I started driving a car and eventually graduated to a cane.
Haven't had a drug free pain-free day ever. Drugs are causing side effects, bruising and bleeding. I am an image and performance coach and speaker with 5 grandbabies under 4 years old. They live about 20 minutes away , see them almost daily!
My surgeon retired. I am at such a loss!
Just wait? Exercise more? Rest more? Go back on nsaids?
Ol..help!
Pilotswife
I can't carry them. I feel so useless and discouraged.

dear pilotswife,
I am so sorry that you are still in so much discomfort -
what kind of pain are you experiencing? when was an xray taken? any other tests perhaps ...
the fact that your surgeon retired does not mean that you cannot see his successor, right ? maybe even better to have new eyes check you out ..
get another opinion, so to speak ..
Lifting and carrying might not be in the picture for a while, just like twisting and bending --- don't feel too bad about that ..
please let us know how you are getting on .. maybe you can start your own discussion?
big warm hug

Still now, two years now, this weekend two years ago I had my second operation, and I will do a piece on being two years in, and post some photos.
Rregarding your pain meds, I find 50mg of Tramadol is a very good pain reliever, and two or three days of even just one, gets in your system and allows normal walking action to occur, thus excersising the muscles properly, pain free, as they regrow back to what they were, I suspect that that it the pain you are getting, growing pains, as your hips are replaced now.
You must let us know what you are taking so we can compare notes, but not here, in a separate post, I suggest, a heading, Nine Months In, I will call mine, Two Years In, and try to have it online to day for interested people....

I agree with you. The longer you delay having your op, the longer it will take to build those muscles again. Muscle loss is something that happens and it's hard to rebuild.
Go for it!! X

Great news and yes for most people it is an amazing transformation of their lives for the better, however there are a very small number for whom the surgery did not live up to expectations.
The reality is that there is no realistic alternative if you are bone on bone and everything in life has a risk attached to it and with this surgery the risk of a poor outcome seems to be quite low.
Cheers
Richard

Hi Lynn, I was down for a spinal but I have tricky veins so in the end I had the
General, two of the ladies on the same ward had it and they both
Said they hardly remembered a thing and both were more awake
And ready to go than the rest of us. I'm 62 and have never had time off work but
The pain had got to the point where I could hardly leave the house
I'd have accepted any form of anaesthetic rather than carry on like
That, so go for it Lynn and please update me with how you go on.x

I am 2 months post op - had the spinal and it was fantastic - I had been very worried about the spinal as I have a bit of problem in my lower back, but the doctor assured me all would be fine and he was right, it was fine, they knocked me out with some sedative, I did not feel a thing and was awake without any side effects from it right away. Don't be afraid it is much better than a general.
