Hi..we live in India..my 17 year old daughter has been unwell since 16september....till November 3rd she complained of crazy aches and pains ..fatigue and headache. And low grade fever below 100 always..ebv is not common in India so many doctors are not aware of it.

We got numerous blood tests done from typhoid to tuberculosis all of which she tested negative.her ultra sound showed enlarged liver slightly and slightly enlarged lump nodes.

She was given antibiotics for 8..days after which the fever went.

We got her tested for ebv..which she tested positive for past ebv illness but level of antibodies high and positive in her body.so all doctors claimed ebv no longer present.

Since 3rd November.. she always complained of body ache fatigue and always feeling feverish though no fever was there..complained of stomach ache and acidity..got ultrasound done..liver was normal..nodes were gone..

Was taken to gastroenterologist..who prescribed medicine for stomach ache and acidity though couldn't see cause for concern.took medication stomach ache acidity fine but constantly complains of stomach feeling full.

Then on 1.December she got a bad attack of sinus..very uncommon for her to get this bad attack of sinus..throat painting and fever around 101..started homoeopath...fever and sinus went in 5 days.

Since then has been on homoeopath.

Told to build immunity..no fever..but low energy..constant fatigue..head ache joint pain....feels lot of her heat in her body.

Homoeopath claims all because of ebv..says has nodes in her neck.

My daughter says she hasn't felt normal since semptember. 2 hours of any activity tires her..has brain fog..lots of aches and pains.

Unfortunately for her she is class 12th and has exams in 2 months so stressed as well.

Today she had a bit hectic day now has 99.2 fever..she is so fed up.

Please help.i understand fatigue but this coming of fever again is normal?please help a very stressed mother

    Hi Maneka,

I had this virus for a year, my daughter also. My granddaughter has been sick since April she is very tired and on independent study at school, she is starting to feel better.

The symptoms very from person to person. it is a very long lasting virus. Our tests were like your daughters. It said the virus had passed but very high immune response. I think that the immune reaction causes a lot of the flu symptoms. Talk to the doctor of course, but what worked for me were vitamin C and E, green tea, ibuprofen. Lots of rest and my doctor recommended Co q 10. I didn't end up taking it because I started improving,

I literally spent this last year sleeping more than I have ever slept in my life, only up for meals and work, thankfully I could do most work from home. It literally felt like having the flu  mixed with terrible anxiety for a year. Thankfully I have recovered for the most part.

      Thank you so much

Unfortunately in India most doctors are not aware of ebv and the most common response I get is ebv should have gone with in a month..

But my daughter hasn't fell herself ..normal..since September..

Was concern about the fever though

      Change in diet helps?

      Hi Maneka,

Not sure about the fever, my daughters came and went. I had a low temperature 97.4 for most of my illness, it is now normal.

I live in the US and the doctors here don't know much more, they told us the same thing that it should be gone in 6-8 weeks. I think that the virus has changed and become stronger. I felt so sick and weak that I ended up in the hospital emergency room, where they diagnosed me with mono and EBV. It is the worst I have ever felt in my life and I didn't start feeling better for 10 months. I was convinced that it must be something more. but after many tests all they could find was EBV , it is a very nasty virus.

As far as diet goes, I think anything that sounds good to her is the way to go, you feel so nauseous that it is hard to eat anything. I lost 15 pounds. Green tea is a good anti inflammatory.

Hi..does Tylenol help..is it safe to give...I believe in usa..you have a Tylenol specifically for aches and pain?

      Hi Maneka,

I use advil, its ingredient is ibuprofen, they call it a non steroidal anti inflammatory. It works for me but consult a doctor, It is over the counter pain reliever here. I haven't used tylenol.

This is an absolutely normal course of mono, lots of people on this forum suffer for 1 + year. Personally, I've been sick since around the February and hadn't had the energy to do anything until around the beginning of this month. Constantly had sore throat, pain in the left chest area, swollen lymph nodes, earache, feeling of dizziness and unwell in general. This experience is quite devastating and scary, I'm 21 and have never been sick for more than a week in my entire life. But I'm slowly improving and I'm sure that your daughter will as well, you have to reassure her that this is an absolutely normal course of mono.

      Hi Catch the bus,

Glad to see you are feeling better this month.

Do you find that you can get through the day just about okay now without having to sleep?

    Hi maneka,

My test results were also the same. I have had mono at some point if it wasn't now, so it's either that or a very similar strain.

i have also been ill a year, definately better than I was but still not quite normal. It is a zig zag recovery, getting better and then feeling bad again.

i eat healthily, as much as I can, even cutting out sugar now. No alcohol. Taking vitamins etc. This will go for, your daughter it can just take a while. Lots of rest!!!!

    Hi Maneka,

So sorry to hear about your daughter being so unwell, I really hope and pray for her recovery soon. The guys on the forum here offer great advice on EBV as they all know what it's like to go through it.

It certainly sounds like it could be a cause of the EBV virus, and as others have said it can be hard to diagnose if the blood test is not done at the very start because for many people it will just show a past illness of EBV. If it is this, just want to reassure and encourage you that things will get better for your daughter, and don't panic if it doesn't come right away because it can take months rather than weeks for most people unfortunately. If your daughter is able to take extra vitamins and herbs that can definitely help boost her immune system, a good strong multi-vitamin per day can help, B complex can be good for energy and extra Vitamin C and Vitamin D, even an immune boosting herb like siberian ginseng can be great.

Stress is also a real factor in the virus unfortunately and is closely linked, and that the fact she has exams too must be so hard. Definitely put her health first is the no.1 priority though, and take time to rest is sooo important with this virus - a common mistake a lot of folk make (understandbly) is to keep trying on as normal and treating it like a normal cold or flu type thing, but this really does need proper and extended rest and removal of stress as much as possible.

Thinking of you and remember your daughter is young - that is a good thing because the younger the person is the easier they can find it to recover from this virus - and I do fully believe that she WILL make a full recovery, hang in there and try not to worry (hard as it is) - and you're doing the right thing by getting advice from doctors and medical folks - but remember some of them as you say don't fully understand the virus.

The forum here is great for support and do let us know how your daughter is doing as time goes on. I believe in Jesus' name she is going to get better, I really do.

Thank you so much for your wonderful message..really hope and pray my daughter feels better soon.i have got more tests done to rule out any other problem..most of which are negative for now..have got her test for ebv done again to be sure because here in India most doctors are finding it hard to believe that ebv can trouble her beyond 4 weeks and it has been 13 weeks for her...The only thing in her reports show white blood cell higher than normal..lymphocytes 52%...normal range 20 to 40 and E.S.R..22mm normal range 0 to 20...is this normal in ebv?

      Hey Maneka,

Hoping the other tests can be helpful and put you and your daughter's mind at rest. I'm afraid I'm not very medically minded for interpreting blood test results or anything, just want you to know that still thinking about you and to let you know that I believe things will get better for your daughter - hang in there and the forum here can be a great source of support.
