Possible temporary deterioration. But you need a doctor's examination.

Hi Michelle. Your story sounds similar! I had my PKR four months ago and it was feeling really good around month 2.5-3. Since then it's regressed! It's swollen, stiff, and hurts. Going down stairs is not pleasant. I do PT at home pretty religiously, and am wondering if I'm over doing it? I am assuming that I'm building muscle, but maybe that's not right. I'm scheduled to do my other knee next week, and am having doubts regarding going through with it, especially if I'm going to be hurting all the time. One thing that I haven't been doing is ice and elevation. I quit doing that around month 3. Maybe that's the reason? How long am I going to have to do the whole ice and elevate thing?

Hi Michelle,
This is my first time on the forum I too had a partial knee replacement almost 3 months ago. Foolishly, I returned to work after only 2 weeks following surgery, believing that I could control my healing process by using care as I used my limbs Was I wrong!
It was apparent to me after a day or two of using my knee that I was suffering immense pain, due I believe to excessive compression stresses.
Now, almost 3 months down the road, though I haven't stopped working in my occupation, I continue to suffer weakness, stiffness, and considerable pain if this joint
I may manage a few hours of continuous sleep on average. I avoid standing to whatever extent possible and sitting while driving causes my pain to increase
Here's the thing that really irks me, once the pain has set in it takes way too long to dissipate. As a rule, the pain and discomfort is endless
I regret doing the surgery as the knee is not healing to my satisfaction leaving me feeling like a crippled person
I can only hope for a better future with recovery and try as I can to rest and heal
The support from the medical staff though sincere seems unable to adequately appease my concern.
Another note is that the physicians attending to me will not prescribe any narcotic medications for my pain and I am way beyond my limit of anti inflammatory medications.
In ending I will say this whole process has left me less whole thus far than I was before undergoing the PKR.

Hi I am 42 had a partial knee replacement July of 2019. I went back to work on Nov 4th. I am a store manager and it has not been easy. I come home and ice everyday I work. I still can't climb the stairs properly. Just hoping to see if anyone can shed some light as to when the pain, and swelling will go away. Also I have pain on the left side of my knee and I asked the doctor what it can be he said its your bone spurs. I said why didn't you shave them down, he said because we only did a partial knee replacement. If I knew that before hand I would have done a full TKR.

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum. On 12/9 I had a partial knee replacement (kneecap only). Back towards the beginning of the thread I saw several comments that no one ever heard of just a knee cap replacement.
Are there any others that have had the knee cap only?

Approx 1.5 yrs ago I had a kneecap only replacement, it's called a PFR, a PatelloFemoral Replacement. It took a while to be able to walk and climb stairs without pain. Things have been going quite well for most of this time but of late it's been giving me a touch of grief. I've been experiencing what I would call a thick feeling in my knee and a bit of pain when I bend it at times. I don't understand why this has started nor what is the cause of it. Maybe it's because I'm a bit of a lounge lizard when I'm not at work otherwise I'm rarely off my feet when I am at work...maybe it's a combination of both.
Other than this issue my knee is technically fine and passes muster with the specialist without any issue.
...........Cheers

I'm 14 months out of partial knee replacement lateral side. I'm NOT HAPPY with my results.
I thought that I would be pain free but that is not the case. It is slightly worse than before operation.
I have not had a cortisone shot yet but now I want one. Does anybody have any alternative solutions to relieve the pain with out taking opioids?
Are any new treatments available?
Thank you for your time.

Hello all, I really could do with your help PLEASE.
I have been suffering with bad knees for the last 10 years after a very intensive squash and running sport and was told that I would need replacement knees.
I researching partial knee replacement and after returning to a private surgeon after 4 visits he said I am a candidate for partial knee replacement.
My question to you is HOW has it worked for you? Please Please let me know. Thank you all. Ian Parish

Hank -- Several doctors advised I get Total Knee Replacements but I refused b/c I didnt have pain on the lateral side of my knees... just the medial in both. read my story below... in the long run, its worth it but if you get both knees done, expect that both might not go so easy. I can say, overall, I do not limp like I did before the biPartial makoplastys. It's better than what it was ... just dealing with the recovery ... take care.
