1st Anniverary After FRHR

Hello fellow hippies
This time last year I was being prepped for surgery. I remember being so terrified of the unknown.
This year has gone by so quickly, and I'm pleased to announce that the surgery was a success, I'm no longer in pain and I'm back to my normal lifestyle
I can tell that it probably won't be long.... maybe another year.... before I have to get my left hip done. When that time comes, I won't hesitate to get the replacement.
Best wishes to all of you who are planning a FHR, or have already had the surgery. While there is a very small percentage that have ongoing issues, the huge majority of us will be left blessed with a new leash on life thanks to the amazing medical professionals.
Thank you All who gave me encouragement during the first few months. It really helped keep me sane and on the right track.
God Bless You All

I had a new approach called the Anterio-Lateral Approach. My surgery was performed in Charleston, SC, USA. The incision was done on the side of the hip, slightly towards the front. I was left with a 5 inch scar (disolvable stitches) which healed very quickly.
The thing that is more important than the type of approach, is the experience of the surgeon.
I wish you the very best, and hope that you have a great recovery

I'm in Georgia and I have chosen a surgeon who comes highly recommended. I will opt for the dissolvable stiches also!

Wow.. rightnext door
It sounds as though you've done your homework concerning the experienced surgeon. That's the first step to a successful outcome.

You are absolutely spot on....the choice of surgeon is key, followed by your health, fitness and a go for it positive attitude.

I had the same approach as you and I also live in Charleston, SC a Town called Mt. Pleasant. I am currently 7 weeks post op. I had a wonderful surgeon. Really no pain, no pain meds just tyenol. The only thing I have.is a bit of a sway when I walk without the cane. Do you have any input on this?
Congrats on your recovery.

It is not a backward step but I think you need to work at strengthening your thigh muscles and whilst you are doing that use whatever aids you need to make sure that you are walking right with an excellent gait. It worked for me. I was very soon sorted!

Actually, i did have my surgery in Mt. Pleasant. I just put Charleston as the region because most people are more familiar with Charleston. My surgeon was Dr. Brodie McKoy from Southern Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
What is name of your surgeon?

Thanks for your input. Do you have any good thigh muscle exercises that you can pass on. I am on a non restrictive program. Currently riding encumber bike (gee I hope I got that right) also walking. Some squats. Any input you can give would be appreciated.

Barbara, have you gone to Physical Therapy? They have a great machine(of course I can't remember the name) sort of a reverse treadmill. You use one leg at a time to power the thing. It makes you use a fullmlong stride to get the tread moving. It actually is very effective. I also have an exercise called the chicken walk that makes me lengthen my stride. Just a thought

Of all the places and surgeons in the world, we had the same one!!! It is a small world. Yes, I do love Dr. McKoy!! I will definitely go back to him if I need anything else done in the future.
No, I didn't have issues with swaying while walking. I can honestly say that I didn't experience any issues out of the norm after having this surgery. I was fairly young though (49 years) and in good health.

Dear Barbara
My favourites are lying on my back and raising my leg about ten inches and hold for ten seconds then relax for ten and keep repeating. Still on my back really arch my back so that my thigh muscles are under pressure and keep repeating. Standing up raise my leg out In front of me hold for ten seconds....relax for ten and keep repeating. Then take the leg backwards and pop your toes on the floor until you can really feel the pressure on your thigh muscles. Ten seconds then relax for ten and keep repeating This is the one I'm really using to improve my stride length.
It's all very boring but essential to making a good recovery. Having said all of that when I had my original hip surgery done twenty years ago all I did was to walk and walk!
Hope that helps.
Cheers Richard

Stacey, when I did PT the person came to the house. That is a mistake because you don't have the machines to do a good job. Can u explain this chicken walk.

NO VIDEO READ INSTRUCTIONS 10
Chicken walks: Bring knee up, extend leg, put heel down, put weight into leg, repeat on other leg. Slow, controlled movements; make sure to push off of toe (roll through your foot). 2 laps, about 20 feet each way
1 x 2 reps
this is the way they wrote instructions. Go slowly and hold your knee up(with knee bent) then extend the lower leg out in front and put heel down. Make sure to make a complete step, heel to toe.

Tell him Kimberley Edmund (English girl) said 'hi'. I won't go into why, but I have a feeling that he'll remember me

Just had my ankle tendon surgery done by Dr. McKoy on the 1st of August. So far so good. Have to be off my foot until the 14th and then hopefully he is putting me in a boot for a month.

That is wonderful news! Just remember not to push yourself and listen to all the instructions. Please keep in touch during your recovery. I know you will do well
