I got told April last year i needed the operation, totally blew it away, went back in July with a change of heart said yes only not before September was going to be a godmother and didn't want to do it on crutches. So my doctor said he would put from October and got my appointment in August for November 13. And never looked back.

I saw the consultant on 8th Jan and had my op on 9th Feb. I asked how long the waiting list was and he said it should be within 18 weeks but If i ring his secrtary she should be able to give me an idea. I rang the day after and she gave me the sat there a nd then. Might be worth ringing the secretary. Within a couple 9f days I had all my appointments through for the pre op and physio sessions etc. I live in Stoke on trent and couldn't fault the care I received on the n.h.s. Hope you don't have to wait too long .

      Hi Jill,

yes the waiting list here is 18 weeks, however I have been going to see my consultant for over a year now, having various tests, I also said I didnt want another one! Only because its not like when you have OA - the pain is nothing like that when it has worn out - well thats my experience. But obviously it will get much worse and can cause damage etc so the sooner the better.

Went to see consultant in April he told me i needed op, said no cant do it, went back in July after getting advice from this wonderful family, said yes but not before September as i was being godmother and didn't want to be on crutches, so  i got my letter in August for the 13th November. So i was lucky i guess

      Hi Sue,

yeah - thats was me - NO I'm not having it done again! the recovery was not easy - people dont realise how bad it is - and to think I was only 37 then - I'm hoping this time I will be more organised and SAY what I want and what I DONT want re medication!!!  I had a very bad reaction to the meds they gave me in hopsital. However, I am ready this time. So glad you had it done - its life changing.

I'm in Australia - I believe my story is bad. Regularly saw GP from 2005, with severe pain, and moderate to severe OA.

Physio wrote GP nasty letter asking why I had even been referred to him when the hip were so bad and so clearly worn out on x-rays.

Letter sent to public hospital clinics by GP.

By Mar 2013 pain untollerable, asked to see Private Ortheopedic Surgeon, he examined me and said worn out, and you need surgery, $10,000.00 as you are now on benefit's govt will pay for prothetics and that saves you $25000.00, Impossible financially. Letter sent to Public hospital, upgraded to Category One, (cat One includes cancer patients). Aug 2013, saw GP's locum again, he looked at file, and said I had THR, I replied thats news to me. Locum immediatley rang hospital, and got me appt 10 days later, at that point surgeon wanted to admit me, no beds, on evidence of March 2013 MRI's booked for urgent surgery 16 Sep 2013, in wheelchair as couldn't walk, developed clot in opposite leg, 9 days before surgery. Finally surgery Oct 2013. 12 weeks later tore out cartledge in left hip, saw same surgeon Jun-Jul 2014, booked for non-urgent but needed THR Feb 2015, again unable to walk to bone on bone pain.

I was 32 weeks on a category ONE list, coudn't believe it took that long, Have made a formal complaint, to hospital, hahahaha, what a joke.

The dates they quoted they contacted me are wrong, they never contacted me, I contacted them 4 times begging for them to do something, didn't make any difference, have since found out you need to present at casuality and keep presenting, after about 3 times, 8 hours each time, yeahh right, a specialist will be called to see you in casuality dept. That would have got me my surgery.

I believe that the hospital may not have had my MRI's from March, 2013, just a Dr's letter that wasn't strong enough, so I was just put on the bottom of the list by date of recieving letter from Dr.

I was told that by secretary in one of the phone calls I made, you will be seen in order of your original letter was recived.

    Hi Tracy,

I was listed for thr at the beginning of November 2015, had my pre-op tests 4 January 2016, was told my op would be end of January, but didn't hear anything, have now got a date of 30 March, but with a different consultant, as the waiting list under my original consultant so long. I'm having my operation in Kendal. I got notification 3 weeks ago of the new date. Best wishes, Jude.

      Hi Jude,

Mr Maguire who is doing my op works at both the Kendal and lancaster hospitals. They only do first hips at Kendal, if you need it replaceing - which I do then it has to be done at Lancaster as special equipment is used as the operation takes longer etc. I have had a few meetings with Mr Maguire at Kendal hospital its a nice one. 3 weeks is what I would like still got some preparing to do like heighst of sofa and bed! Thanks for you info its really helpful - Whos your consultant? Good luck with your op.

      Hi Tracy,

Yes Mr Maguire was my original consultant, but never met him, saw his registrar in Kendal. My case was listed as acute, but towards end February started to make phone calls! According to his secretary there were 65 people above me on his list, and, after a discussion, received an offer to have the operation under Mr Stewart who works part-time, but does the Amis approach, incision through stomach area, so I accepted as deterioration has been really fast in my right hip. Have not met him either, but many of my questions have been answered in this lovely forum. Hope everything goes well for you, keep in touch. Best wishes, Jude.

      Hi Jude,

Thats very interesting info many thanks. Mr Maguire is doing the op as far as I'm aware he says the hip replacement I have already will only get worse as the plastic liner has worn away and causing other problems. He said it needs doing sooner rather than later. However, I have not pushed the op at all - this is due to the fact I have only had it 13 years and do not relish the thought of having to keep getting these ops. My first THR changed my life - like you I was in so much pain from the OA, bit as soon as I woke from the op - the pain had gone!!! I have had 13 good years with this hip and I'm sorry to part with it!!! I amnot in pain like the OA at all, its mostly uncomfortable and feels like sitting on a golf ball, and stiff, especially after exercise. Good luck - will def be reading all your posts - nice to have a neighbour near by!!!!

      Hi Tracy

Really encouraging and inspiring to hear your positive comments about your hip replacement. I can't wait for the op! Though, sure I will be petrified the day before! But will be so good to get my life back on track and run my business. Do inform when you have your op. Kind regards, Jude.
