2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,
Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).
Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...
Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).
Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse
Thanks for any help at all.

It sucks big time but nice to know there are others out there in the same situation, hopefully we can solve it for us all.

Here are thoughts from a different perspective. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believe such mucus are typical signs of "chilliness inside the body". Chilliness is a TCM term defining imperceptible chill that enters human body from the environment. For example, upon exiting a swimming pool, one tends to blow the nose and the nasal mucus is a sign of discharged chilliness. Even under intense sunlight in summer, 'chilliness' would enter human body due to extended stay inside relatively cold water.
With your symptom, I would venture to guess that there might have been a history of either extended exposure in much colder temperature than body and extensive drink of ice beverages, which are the common ways of chilliness entering the body. One suggestion is to reduce exposure of such factors, and the ultimate treat is to see an authentic TCM doctor, who may prescribe some medicine to expel the chilliness inside the body, if not eradicate it.

hello all
recently I have read an article where they were advising drinking some apple cider vinegar and honey with warm water and they using a small amount in the nasal flush as well, I figured i would give it a try and 1 week in now 80% of my symptoms have gone and I am almost normal. I still have some coughing and gooey snot but very little now compared to what I had. Just thought I would share.
The Apple cider vinegar needs to contain the "mother" and the honey is melaka

I mix 2 x tablespoons of ACV with 1 x teaspoon of honey in 100ml of warm water I drink 2/3 or this and the remainder I add to my nose wash bottle, need to be careful not to add to much as it will sting your sinusitis.
Good luck mate

Mine started from taking two breath of pot from a friend’s pipe and within week the green thick phlegm developed, contacted bacteria that were in the pipe and exacerbated what ever prior rather minor symptoms I had.
1. Took Probiotics, result phlegm changed the yellow to white
2. Neti pot any teapot small enough for nose cleansing will do, just pour in water one and flow other the other nose hole. Repeat in other nostril until water cleanses both pharynx and space near larynx, and I feel like I can function without a glob in my throat. Takes 5 min-10min morning and night. Result cleans it up for the day.
3. Hydration! Keep fluid intake consistent through the day. Water, water more water. Your body forms a more stubborn phlegm from lack of fluid hydration. Water is the building block of all body process, builds Yin and Jing( which I explain in 6). Not sugary drinks.
4. Cut out mucus producing food like buttery milky cheesy constituents
5. High pillow support at night to keep phlegm from building up blocking nasal passage and result in oxygen/ air deprivated sleep
6. This is getting into Traditional Chinese Medicine theories. So any kind of smoke pollution irritates the pulmonary system and burns up YIN. Yin is the ability of our body to provide fluid moisture and to provide a blood building/earthy quality for the body. Versus the YANG which is the energy that’s firey moving and can be irritating if over the Yin in scale. So this yin imbalalnce comes from the yang thickening the fluid and being older in age this is more likely to happen. With that understanding we do more Yin building activities like life style balancing acts. Sleep schedule regularity, eating regular on time nutritious meal not junk(avoid fried food, take less of the high calorie food like peanut butter and chocolate based food) , drink water not soda not energy drink, keeping exercise to moderate activity like swim and stroll yoga meditation not extreme sport, life in moderation so you don’t aggravate your yin. Also watching your high caffeine intake in coffee and other energy giving food/drink(red bull monster...), they borrow the parasympathetic energy building block to throw it into the sympathetic energy path way. Not good for yin metabolic normal body activity resting sustaining energy( digestion, thermo etc.)
in summary it is a more likely a lifestyle management disease not a cure all energy.

Hello,
I am 28 years old recently just have similar symptoms that started in January 2018.
Events that led up to it was a sore throat that I was prescribed antibiotics for.
After the sore throat went away, the mucus started developing.
I thought it was from a cold so I didn't think anything of it. It has been 6 month now and its still here.
The mucus is clear and not clumpy. Its more of like a very sticky goo that stretches and not break.
The feeling is not in the lung/throat area, its more like a post-nasal drip that doesn't drip.
To hack it out I have to force inhale through my nose to get it down in the back of the throat to try and cough it out. Even coughing it out is hard as it doesn't come out easily or sometime small pieces would shoot out 10 feet in front of me. I've also tried swallowing it but it does not go down.
It does not seem to affect my sleep. It is an issue getting through the day having to hack every 5 to 10 minutes.
Its becoming a normal routine like breathing.
I have no other symptoms. The doctor prescribed me Rhinitis spray but made no difference.
I also tried saline spray into the nose and let it drip down to where the mucus is but its a relief for about 10 minutes and its back to square one.
I really don't want to keep having to pay for doctor visit just for them to tell me they don't know whats wrong, or prescribe random medications.
Currently I do not have any other relief idea.
I will try the netipot that everyone here mentioned and post an update.

MIne WAS getting better, at least not coughing as much, but it's been bad the last couple days, lots of mucus and this is from Dec. 2016. I hate this! I had a chest x-ray, a sonogram on my thyroid, a heart test, and all is good. Is it what they are spraying overhead?

Hey Emsee -- antibiotics or steroids? I've read that there are some reports that steroids can cause the sphincter in the esophagus that stops some backflow of acid to become degraded. My symptoms (sensation of phlegm but no phlegm) were shortly after a very bad chest cold that required multiple rounds of steroids.

I have had no steroids, so it might cause it, but mine wasn't.

It was just antibiotics, I don't think they gave me any steroids.
Do you cough up anything at all or just a sensation?
For me I cough up something every 10 minutes but very little. Its like it just keeps creating more mucus after I cough it out.

I have come to the conclusion that all this has been caused by black mold poisoning...As I am highly allergic to penicillin, the black mold spores have been slowly poisoning me over the past 5 years or so...that's why antibiotics and antihistamines haven't worked...and steroids have done nothing but wreck my skin...and all nasal sprays just cause more nose bleeds...apparently probiotics are excellent for sorting this stuff out...so I'm gonna try them for a month...they've gotta be better than the crap from the Dr.

My mucus is mostly stuck at the back of my soft palate, where my nose meet my throat and feels very gluey. Where exactly is your sensation at?

I have been thinking that too recently. Have you ever taken antifungals or gone on an antifungal diet? Apparently theres such a thing as a fungus ball being lodged in sinuses, which makes sense why only one side of mine is affected. It has to be removed with surgery.
