2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,
Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).
Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...
Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).
Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse
Thanks for any help at all.

Oops - I tapped on the wrong thing. Now to finish my post...
I can skip the nasal steroid without dire results.
I still have dust allergy and pollen allergies, but it's without the thick mucous.
It was the best thing I have ever done for my health!
Good luck everyone!

I have read this discussion and suffer the exact same to the point of brining on depression but for what it's worth I discovered that all of my symptoms vanish when I work out. I am into weight lifting and periodically do a 10 week run of lifting free weights and stick to a strict high protein diet. Within these 10 weeks my symptoms completely go but return immediately when I stop for a time out period of 2 weeks or more. So is it the strengthening of the muscles (with weight training every single muscle in your body is exercised, even the smallest muscles in the face etc) which is helping or is it the diet? My diet is loads of chicken, fish and potatoes, fruit and veg, whey protein shakes, loads of water and some vitimins and supplements. Whilst training I do not take or have to take any medication, antihistamines etc. Weight lifting has many health benefits and it certainly cures all my problems not just my mucus problem. Hope this may be of some help.

I have some relief for you all!
I've lived with this so long that I thought I was normal! Annoying and gross to anyone unfortunate enough to hear me Hawking lugees all day!
I also suffered from snoring which has ruined my relationship! I've also started suffering more regularly from tonsil stones... LOK THEM UP!
Anyway, doctors are no help. It wasn't until I bought a battery powered nettipot that simultaneously shoots saline up one nostril while sucking it out the other!
It was then that the first time in my life that I had realized how much breathing through my nose was restricted. I had no idea until that moment what I had been missing all my life. The box says to "take the two week challenge" using the device twice a day relieves the snoring/apnea, relieves my chronic post nasal drip and has reduced anxiety. It's amazing! But not a cure.
I have a feeling that the tonsil stones and chronic post nasal drip (always cloudy white) might be related. Perhaps my wisdom teeth too... After all the research I have done my Spidey senses is telling me to get checked for Candida (over production of yeast in body). Staying away from dairy has also helped alleviate the symptoms... I think I'm on the right path now.... Hope this helps someone else... Best of luck to you all. PS- the netti pot is made by "Navage" and as long as I use it on the reg... I feel better + it's not a drug!

I had thought of the yeast thing and the dairy. Might try both. I have no tonsils, though. I breathe thru my nose fine. It's just the cough.

I have been dealing with these symptoms for over 4 years now. I have seen many specialists and had countless tests. I have been given a few definitive diagnoses. Esophageal dysmotility, esophageal gastric junction outflow obstruction ( look that up if interested), contact allergies to balsam of peru and propolis. What helps is lying down especially on my left side. I have tried ppi and h2 blockers, allergy meds and sprays, neurological pain meds. Lots of meds help at first because they dry up the post nasal drainage but dry my mouth out terribly and I’m back to coughing. I’m doing speech therapy now try to get my voice back. I have given up all trigge foods and drinks. Sleep is a relief. My symptoms don’t add. I can relate to many on this board. I have tried the Neto pot also. Minimal relief. I pray to God for relief and a end to this. I now have burning mouth symptoms for past year. Getting worse.

Hi Derek,
Thanks for your reply.
Not that's not the problem.
My nose is always dry and mucus keeps on stickying into my nose and due to dryness sometimes I have breathing problem as well.

Omg exactly the same symptoms here! Started in my 40s and have continued for about 5 years now. The mucus used to be so bad when I lay down asleep that I would woke up suffocating multiple times through the night. Nose and throat totally bunged up with sticky thick mucus. I've never been a mouth breather so it was really difficult to try and sleep with my mouth open! Much worse lying down. Poundy heart. Really depressing. Made me afraid to sleep. Thought I might die for a while. So scary! I tried everything from nasal sprays and netti pots (irrgating my nose while physically upside down (watch your ears!) and with baby shampoo at one point). Probiotics, supplements, medications.... and fasting. (No difference.) I travel a lot, location did not affect it... nor did removing chemicals / or air quality (I bought a meter). Then diet. I finally controlled it with an impossibly strict diet (as someone mentioned above) protein & veg. No starch, grains, processed foods, thickeners. For me starch, grains and thickeners were a trigger. As was chocolate. The problem was it was impossible to stick to. Hidden ingredients in everything: cream cheese, almond milk, even cream has thickeners! So I was forever being derailed and "poisoned"! Fast forward two years, and now I also felt depressed, had red itchy eyes and skin, hot flashes, cold feet, bloating, bleeding gums, dandruff, constipation, and ridiculous amounts of mucus that I was having to blow all the time. Like my nose was running like a tap! I seemed to have colds all the time and was run down. Had numerous doctors visits - no help! I discover two things: food intolerances and SIBO. I begin taking a herbal antibiotic for about three months. All other symptoms passed except for the mucus... but that has changed slightly... It's thinner so now I'm now coughing now, as well as hawking, because the coughing is small bits of mucus making their way down and choking me. My voice is horse, but I have none of the previous symptoms! So I believe I'm onto something with SIBO and maybe I just haven't shifted it all yet? So, my new focus is now on Chinese Medicine and the concept of cold damp and chi deficiency... I'm seeing if eating a more warming nourishing diet according to Chinese principles helps and curing SIBO. Rather than cold damp forming foods like ice cream I try to eat warming soups and broths. I may do another round of herbal antibiotics... but really healing your gut is important. And, I really believe that our jaws are misaligned and that it could be a result of a nerve issue because of an issue with facial dystrophy. Look up orthotropics, dr. Mike Mew and the result of narrow airways. I strongly believe that, because I wasn't breast fed, and had overcrowded teeth, my airways are narrow, and with age (less estrogen) when I lie down my airway muscles collapse and mucus gathers. Just my ideas... but I've had to dig seek and research and try so many different things because the doctors are just so bloody useless! Cpap didn't help. Anti histamines, pseudoephedrine, NAC - all no change for me. Diet really was the biggest factor... (which made me believe that it's stomach (gut bacteria) related and not anxiety. Silent Gerd is another avenue I think could have an impact. )

Barry, it's awful. I hear you! You eat one thing at a restaurant or friend's house that contains a grain or thickener and then suffer symptoms for a week. You just get over *that poisoning* and then you accidentally eat cream cheese or yoghurt thickened with tapioca starch, and it happens all over again, right? 😢 No cakes, no celebration meals or nights out with friends, unless you know EXACTLY what's in everything. Is awful and almost impossible to completely avoid! I got *poisoned * with bacon (starch), sausages, tea (green tea has rice in it)... juice, wasabi... so many things! I wish you all the best too and hope you can find lasting relief. I feel like I'm over the worst but still hawk my throat every 5 minutes. I've given up caring what people think, it's way more important to breathe! 🤣 Good luck.
