2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,
Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).
Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...
Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).
Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse
Thanks for any help at all.

Do any of you experience bad breath or at least a bad taste in your mouth, due to either reflux coming up or bacteria going crazy on the mucus sitting in the back of your throat?

Hi All
It's incredible there are so many of us suffering with this condition!
My issues started 4 years ago following a really bad chest infection, then I was diagnosed as having Asthma (which I'd never had in childhood so why at 50!) I have never smoked. I went to see a specialist who tested for allergies but I was all clear other than I reacted slightly to the strong doze histamine test he did. My symptoms have got progressively worse going through Menopause. I now cannot tolerate exhaust fume smells or strong deodorants, they are like poison to me. I get shortness of breath, like I cannot get a full breath....and phlegm builds up which I cough/spit up especially in the morning after rising. I can feel it running down the back of my throat. My nose is often blocked and I do get sinus issues. I get shortness of breath when I eat too, like the food won't go down properly and sometimes some food will come back up....even though I have chewed food well.
I'm now wondering if there is a link to hormones in women??...and possible for men too. The reason I say this is, I tried HRT for a while and it really helped relieve my Chest/Throat/Phlegm/ Cough symptoms but the HRT was causing other issues so I came off it....and blimey! boy did my Chest/Throat/Phlegm/Cough symptoms come back with a vengeance! Any other ladies out there experience relief when using HRT?
I do think our gut health has a lot to do with our health too....been interesting reading the posts relating to cutting back on Sugars/carbs etc. Also the connection with possible Silent Reflux.
Cheers Cat 🐱

I also had a 4 month cold and the cough never left that started 4 years ago around Nov. Were we all sprayed with something? Mine is better and gone actually for a week or more at a time, but so far has returned. This time not and I pray it stays away.

4 years ago was when mine started also- they are on record for dumping aluminum and barium into the atmosphere. im 57 now. look for commonalities like if the year you started had many others within a few years, also regional, like California.

Hi Nita28209
Who knows if we were sprayed with something.... we really don't know whats out there flying around in our air/ atmosphere do we, potentially causing untold irritation to our respiratory system! Glad to hear you are feeling better though 😊

Hi David89347
I had never heard that aluminum and barium were dumped into the atmosphere! that doesn't sound like a good thing to do at all! We really don't know what we are breathing in from the air/ atmosphere around us do we?! We are at the mercy of industries et al doing the right thing environmentally....but are they??.....it all seems to be down to saving money, money, money these days!!!.......and hopefully for future generations the battery run vehicles will help cut pollution. I am in Australia. Wishing you good health.😊

cause (yep, i know what you're going to say) is from what they've been dumping i to the sir- aluminum and barion, just to start. it has made us more sensitive to allergens. look at the ages of the people on this post- im 57. if people could give their age and state it would help to verify or find what happened. im seeing a lot of posts where people started having this problem within a 5 year time period.

hi! do you feel like there is something that you can't swallow? like something stuck or bothering your throat or trachea? in addition to coughing? In my case the "thing" was changing. Right now i am one month fine and then one or two weeks bad. It's been two years from now trying to understand and survive. I've made all kind of medical studies because all of my family are doctors and it was easy for me to access to specialists and exams. Yet I could not find the cause of our suffering. I have more and more suspicions that it has to do with a laryngeal neuropathy, a kind of neurological hypersensitivity. That's why everything that helps to clear the airways always helps not to feel and regenerate the nerve. In my case dropping saline solution in my nose helps soften the secretions and be able to swallow better (with your head back many times a day); every morning and night i gargle with aloe vera juice and then i swallow that (my ENT gave my that because helps regenerate mucous membrane); i take zetericine (antiallergic) every day; and sometimes drink N-acetil cisteine (it loosen secretions and is not dangerous to take). Some times ago i tried to take nexium (high dose 40 mg twice a day given from my ENT) for a few months but i don't know if that helps and this drug is not to take for a long time. Right now when i feel like acidity feeling i chew one or two gaviscon or one gaviscon advance.
That's all i can bring you guys. Hope it helps! Bye!
PS: sorry for my English, is not my language 😉

Do you have Candida? Both my daughters had it severely. Oil of Or egano capsules will knock that right of you.

I don't know, but that diet helped reduce the mucus. How can you test if you have candida or not?

BTW, I have been taking oil of oregano for months, but yet my mucus not gone. Before it was way worse.

I saw this today in response to someone having horrible night coughing. Mine is not limited to nights, but I never knew this info before about histamine intolerance. Maybe this can help. Let's try it and report back please. I'd give it three weeks.
Have you ever read about histamine intolerance? If you have an overload of histamine a in your body from (over)eating high histamine foods like fermented foods (wine, sauerkraut, yogurt, hard cheeses), bone broth, tomatoes, avocados, spinach, bananas, oranges, (and even chocolate), your body can have a hard time digesting all of it, and you can have a myriad of symptoms that seem like allergies (hives, coughing fits, hot flashes, etc) .
A year ago, I overdid it on most of the foods listed above because I knew fermented foods, bone broths, and avocados were healthy. I started having dizzy spells, heart palpitations, and chest pains on a on a daily basis and I thought something was seriously wrong with me. I went to the doctor and blood work was fine, so I had to investigate on my own. Thankfully, I figured out what it was and avoided high histamine foods for a while and everything normalized. I know you eat these types of foods, so it may be worth looking into.

Yes. I had the same thing, for years. Someone suggested Evening Primrose Oil. I tried it in desperation. It WORKED! What have you got to lose?
