2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,

Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).

Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...

Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).

Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse sad

Thanks for any help at all.

    ways forward

    I've also found

that change in diet. no dairy no gluten.

    gargling bi carb

pressing the tonsils to remove tonsil stones

humming or vibrating my throat are all helping.

over all I am getting less of a problem.

I have coughed up tonsil stones that are white and some hard stone like ones that are black. They smell like hell!

This keeps reacuring so I feel trapped food is part of the issue. haggling after every meal is helping

id definitely request to have my tonsils out. show the doctor the stones. you shouldn't have to live like this.

the spit test is a good indicator. spit in a glass of water in the morning. If the spit goes stringy or sinks it an indication you have a Candida issue.

It's important to spit as soon as you wake up and before you eat or drink. 10 minutes in the glass the spit should settle

Hmmm when did the post nasal drip start? Mine started after a number of different things that could have been the cause. It started a bit after I stopped taking birth control. I believe I've had pretty unbalanced hormones my whole life, but I think it got worse after I stopped birth control because it was just covering up a bigger problem. Could the estrogen blocker, or the reason for the estrogen blocker, be the cause?

I have significant update on managing symptoms, my post nasal drip lasts already more than 6 month. Experimentally I found that sleeping on your back makes things much worse and results in drip getting into lungs/trachea , so I do sleep on either side with low pillow . The drip still happens but you can live with it without medication. I still see streaks on back on my throat.

Does anyone here take a blood pressure medication? If so, this may be the cause.

That has already been dealt with to no help. I started taking 1200 mg guilfesin or how u spell it, and it helps.

It isn't perfect, but today I haven't yet coughed once. If I wasn't taking it, I would be coughing all day.

1200 mg Guaifenesin-mucinex has it but it has other things in it. Try to get the pure pills.

I don't think doctors here will prescribe what you had.

I was referred to a specialist who recommended these meds to be tried in order. Metoclopramide . Baclofen. Macrolide antibiotics erythromycin. all these have worked for a while but im know on low dose 5 mg of morphine which is working. All this started in 2012. I ve also read that Evening Primrose oil could help. Good luck everyone.

I am trying to post a story that was in a UK paper online today about a woman with a constant cough who had TB. She was in England, had sepsis and lost limbs because she had it so long.
