2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,

Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).

Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...

Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).

Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse sad

Thanks for any help at all.

I've been dealing with this too for over a year. I have found some relief with cutting ALL dairy from my diet as well as taking a supplement called NAC 500mg daily. I also take 1000 vit C and a nasal spray called Xlear (main ingredient is Xylitol) daily. remember that through coughing and clearing of the throat you have damaged tissues which will take months to heal. try to not cough or do so much throat clearing and drink plenty of water. Also, if you like ginger make ginger tea with fresh ginger daily (boil for 15 mins) and add a little honey. I also find that massaging my throat helps. This has made my life at least tolerable enough to live normally again. Good luck to you.

I have responded to your plea, but not sure where the response has gone, it may have gone on the general list instead of to you personally.

      Hi Jasmin,

Sorry I live in South Florida . His name is Dr Nathan Nachlas though.

Hi Joseph, how are you felling now after the treatment? I did a bit of research, the Clarifix is mainly for Rhinitis, runny nose, congestion, etc.. I breath easily and dont have runny nose, mine is mainly post nasal, will this help? What were your exact symptoms? I do cough a lot to clear my chest and clear my throat.

I am thinking of Clarifix, and wanted to check with you. Do you have to repeat the procedure or it is one time thing?

      I appreciate your reply. Thanks

Hello NurseandMom, I've had my post nasal drip for over 30 years and nothing has cured it as there isn't a cure as such. I also have periods where I am at the end of my tether and find it difficult to live with it., sleepless nights and on occasions vomiting because of the sensation in my throat. I've been under my ENT consultant for about 20 years and had surgery, allergy tests, nasal sprays, antihistamines, you name it I've tried it. The steroid nasal spray made it worse! So the ENT consultant has now taken me off antihistamines and the steroid nasal spray and perscribed a non-steroid nasal spray called Rinatec. This thickens up the mucus which in turn stops it from dripping down the back of the throat. Up to now I've had some relief, but my drip comes in phases, it will be bad for a few months then suddenly goes away for a few months, but never goes away permanently. The ENT guy said it is an allergy, but what he doesn't know. Its bad at night, so I sleep propped up on three pillows, sucking a peppermint. Chewing gum also helps. I've heard on the internet that there's a new procedure called Clarifix which is something to do with cauterising a nerve to stop it producing as much mucus, but I think its in its early stages and I've not heard what the results are. Don't despair, I know its terrible to live with, but you will find ways around it, like me, chewing gum, sucking sweets, using Rinatec and sleeping on 3 pillows! I've recently had an endoscope and amazingly my throat has not been damaged with all the coughing and throat clearing which is incredible. I do think though that the post nasal drip has caused me to have more chest infections lately, although my GP doesn't agree with me.

After 4 long years of suffering I finally think I know what cause the phlegm. My body was rejecting a medication for High Blood Pressure. Went to a Cardiologist and he change my medicine to something new. The symptoms has slowly cleared up. To think I suffered for 4 years is unimagineable.I tried to tell my PCP back then that I thought the prescription he gave my body was rejecting it. But he insisted that the medicine wouldn't cause such a reaction.

      Indamedapide

Think that's how they are spelled.

The BP medicine was called Bsytolic....The phlegm cleared up but it has returned. Not as bad as it was when I was on it. I also think it may be sugar related as well. Because I started to cheat a little and drink soda and eat a few sweet food. Which caused the phlegm to return. None of those medicines you listed did I take.

My doc took me off what we thought was causing it, a HBP med, but it didn't help.
