2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,

Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).

Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...

Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).

Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse sad

Thanks for any help at all.

Yes they are done at a nucular medicine radiology clinic with CT and radiology scan, using nucular mediums, they are able to map the movement of acids (gas or liquid) from the stomach over a 3 hour period. There is only one place where I am that offers this new scan, not sure where you are.

Interesting read of the posts in this thread, although I have only read some of them. Dealing with this thickened mucous can be very troublesome and most difficult to find a solution.

I started to have sinus throat issues around 18 months ago. I have been combining the services of both an ENT and Gastroenterologist specialist in dealing with this.

Fro a Gastro point of view any reflux that I'm having is in the normal range. I have had a bravo chip fitted in my esophagus to test for reflux and also a restech chip fitted in my larynx to test for any LPR. Both results came back as fine. As did the gastoscopy and other stomach tests, including CT scans with contrast etc etc.

He has now placed me on 10mg Nortriptyline each night to help with the "sensitivity" to see if this helps.

I had previously been put on double dose PPI's for several months, as well as using peptac or Gavison advanced each night. I never experienced reflux and was kinda worse after using those..! I now do not take the PPI's.

It is a difficult situation to both manage and treat, especially when you cross between two specialists as I do. Getting them to CC each other their letters and agree on a single course of treatment does have its challenges. Both of them though are very supportive. The Gastro one has told me ha the does believe in LPR but with the Restech chip and all the other tests showing to be normal then I have no reflux issues that can be measured or treated.

From an ENT point of view I have already had one FESS surgery (five months ago) on both of my maxillary sinuses. Both were very infected and totally blocked at their openings.

I have had another CT scan, a couple of weeks ago, which identified that both of my ethmoid and frontal sinuses are now blocked and infected. When he looked with a scope he could no longer see any openings to my ethmoid sinuses due to the very thick and yellow mucous.

I am irrigating each day, and using steam. By using povidone iodine within my irrigation mixes I can keep down the green colour of the mucous but as the irrigation does nothing for the frontal or ethmoid sinuses I am booked to have more surgery in a couple of weeks time.

This surgery should open up the pathways for my ethmoid sinuses to drain and allow them to be irrigated in the future.

For me the issues has been typically sinus related in what I present but there is always a thickening of the mucous. the thickened mucous tends to stick around my throat and in the morning I need a couple of coughs to clear it. Chest examinations and x-rays etc have always been clear. I know that if I stop using povidone iodine in my rinses then the green aspect in the mucous will return.

I have tried baby shampoo as well as xylitol to help to break up the biofilms formed in my nasal cavities.

I had been taking a strong course of antibiotics for six weeks to try and sort out the thickened mucous, with no results.

Mostly the thickened mucous, which feels very thick and stuck around the throat seems to originate in an area just beyond what my nose can blow, if that makes sense. It is mostly clear but also can be yellow or green at times.

I have been trying to improve my gut health by drinking kefir and taking probiotics. Around 80% of our immune system is within our guts so that seems a good idea.

Some facial pain is present still, but at least I no longer get toothache since my maxillary sinus operation.

I am fed up of feeling this very thickened mucous around my throat and also around my nasal cavities. it also reduces my sense of smell to almost nothing as well as giving me ear pain, that can be quite bad at times. My ENT specialist can see they are covered in mucous from what is dripping down from the ethmoid sinuses. It can also affect my voice, both in volume and being sore. My vocal cords are working fine.

IF I can get periods where I have no active sinus infections going on and manage to only need to use saline irrigation then, those times are rare, there is a relationship between my sinus health and the thickened mucous. That does start to reduce my mucous around my throat, but it does soon return, as do my sinus issues.

Over two years of this now. I have had 4 week long periods where this completely goes away, but then it returns. So, how can it be allergies or other things? It is just weird. I cough all day on and off when it is active.

Hey there is HOPE! New Treatment! Clarifix.

I've had this for over 3 years. been ruining my life. been tested for everything. I too thought I can't do it anymore.

my new ENT said I have Chronic Non Allergic Rhinitis or Vasomotor rhinitis The FDA just approved a treatment for it. http:// clarifix. com. take out spaces.

Basically the nerves in my nose are too sensitive and act like it is an allergy or infection.

this new treatment basically kills the nerve that sends the message to keep producing the mucus. I am so happy, after another CT scan she is going to give me the Treatment. Clarifix, out patient, they numb your nose and basically freeze the nerve. she said it will give me horrible brain freeze nut only for a few minutes. the whole thing only takes an hour.

I am so hopeful. so many of us suffering, I have not been able to work, go to the movies, sleep well. basically no life at all.

I have PTSD and take anxiety and antidepressants and have hypothyroidism. all of these could have caused the problems no one will no for sure. but once that nerve goes nuts it doesn't matter.

I have no zero affiliation with this company I've been searching for over 3 years. I hope to have mine done in April 2019 May at the latest. don't give up.

best wishes to us all. tell the other message boards, this is a new treatment

Wow, what kinds of tests do they do to prove this is what you have?

seems like a simple polyp removal using freezing, i have mine done 30 years ago and no issues till recently. but now you can do the same with medication which very affective as well. the problem is sinus rhinitis, which medication cant reach neither this kind of freezing.

i used olopatadine nasal spray when , after living in apartments , i felt like 30 year old problem is coming back, probably because of penetrating smoke. i moved out and it gave me a 3 years break. symptoms stopped on 3d day of usage. but it came back after hives rash and some nasty winter viruses, this time sinus was involved. i tried to use same spray again, but the result was opposite, it helped initially but once the drip onset started i felt burning for couple of weeks in my nose. i was over 40, i think age plays the role as well. i am following anti hystamine diet mentioned here and taking supplementals made from onion which keeps it at bay. also sleeping on your back and no violent nose blowing, this winter i got 2 sinus infections, but after stopping nose blowing , nothing for 2 month, can be coinsedence though. if you allow the drip to go to you air path, you will get asthma very soon , i was very close , breezing onion vapors started to make me cough.

the supplemental is called Quercetin , diet alone is not effective, have to take daily. it keeps it at bay.

      HI There,

As soon as I read this I looked into the treatment and called my doctor .

He scheduled a turbinate resection and the Clarifix . I had the procedure done on Wednesday and return to him in the first week if May . The results can take anywhere from 7 days to 1 month before feeling the relief. I Can't blow my nose until my follow up but it definitely feels different. I don't feel that big thick glob on my throat. I hope it gets better after my follow up and this is not just a result from the procedure .

Is this serious surgery and what does the doc have to do to find out if this is needed? What kind of tests? What is that medicine?

I am dropping Olive oil in my nostrils before I go to bed, and clearing the throat, and in the morning, and clearing the throat again. It appears it is healing. I do have less mucus day by day. Not completely gone though. But definitely see the difference.
