2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,
Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).
Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...
Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).
Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse
Thanks for any help at all.

Having the exact same issue.
This issue for me started roughly 2/3 years ago. It started around the same time i got tonsillitis.
I've been on Lansoprazole since, in the first instance it seem to help and made it disappear, but over the last 18 months or so i just constantly feel like i have mucas or food stuck in my throat.
The tonsils have come out, as i kept getting really bad tonsillitis, 4/5 times a year to a point where i was literally bed bound.
I'm currently waiting for an endoscopy, although i doubt this will show anything abnormal?
After reading some of the replies on here and some of the things people have had done or tried, i feel like this will never get sorted.
In terms of hair loss. Yes, i feel like the hair loss started around the same time this started. My crown is really thin. Not sure if it's at all related though?

I have had a similar experience.
Growing up I always found that drinking a lot of water and sleeping on my back always seemed to improve my cognitive abilities and my feeling of wellness. I never thought I was sick as it was all that I knew.
In 2007 I begun drinking a lot more water. I found that the more water I drank at once the better I felt faster. I was drinking about 1.5 to 2 liters at once every 30 minutes. I did not understand back then why I felt better, I just knew it worked for me. The only downside with drinking copious amounts of water was my body seemed to be retaining the water and I felt really puffy. Also, I think I forced my stomach to expand which meant I felt hungrier more easily and ate a lot me to feel satisfied. The sum total effect of this was rapid weight gain. I went from about 70 to 95 kilos within a very short time.
As a compromise, I begun reducing my water intake. I limited it to a few liters a day at night. I also noticed that taking hot water helped better than when I took cold water - but the effect was not quite the same as when I took large amounts of water at once.
In 2012 I moved to a house with carpeting. I live on a fairly hot and humid island that requires the running of air-conditioning and fans virtually any time you are in the house. This is where things started going downhill for me. After a few weeks my nasal passage felt like it was on fire and I had painful consistent pressure on my forehead.
Things kept getting worse to the point my brain was not functioning as it should and I was not getting much sleep. I would toss and turn all night. I am fairly articulate when feeling normal - but the inflammation was so bad that I would struggle to find common words and compose coherent sentences. And thus begun my long and expensive journey visiting various specialists with no real help or improvement.
Scans revealed I had a deviated septum but like most people posting the ENT did not think that it was that bad. I also performed the pricking allergy test and I was found to be hyper allergic to quite a few common allergens including dust and mound.
I ended up perfuming balloon sinoplasty and getting a correction of the deviated septum but that did not seem to help much. I also commenced weekly allergy shots to desensitize my body to the allergens and gave up 6 months in.
The most relief I got came when I finally decided to move houses to one without carpeting. By the time I was moving houses, my tossing and turning had worn out the base board on my side of the bed creating a tear in the material. My wife’s side was practically new. Had a tough time explaining that one to the landlord.
Luckily I had very good insurance that meant I could seek out the best help I could find and after visiting John Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic and all specialists basically pronouncing they could find nothing wrong with me, I started to despair.
Oh- prior to this I had very bad acidity that felt like ulcers, but no ulcers would show up on the scans or when they put the cameras up by behind.
One of the ENT's suggested that since I had not had much luck with the sinus approach I could consider it being a dental approach. Until then my teeth had more or less normal issues and were not particularly bad. Although as a result of feeling like a zombie for years my oral care was not at the level it should be.
My dentist advised that he saw nothing wrong with me though one of my wisdom teeth was impacted and growing below the gum. It had probably been like this since I was a teenager. I am now 37. I insisted that he extract the tooth. This was the next best decision I made in relation to my condition.
The part of the tooth that was growing under my gum was badly decayed and although I do not have any scientific proof of it, was contributing to my feeling to crappy for so long. Soon after my stomach issues improved quite a bit and I was no longer in constant pain. My sinuses also made a remarkable improvement but were not completely healed. I believe that this one tooth was trapping and acting like a culture for bacteria which I swallowed day in day out for very many years. This one act alone improved the quality of my life significantly.
In my pursuit for feeling better I have had a few other teeth extracted. This was against the advice of my dentist. One tooth was so damaged that it could not have been saved despite not showing any signs of damage on the x-rays -and 2 were fairly healthy - so it is a hit and miss. There was some improvement with the extraction of the damaged tooth.
Although I have come a long way in my journey to find wellness I still suffer sometimes and my quality of life has been heavily impacted.
The things that I find help are taking a mucus thinner - specifically Mucinex. Only the blue drowsy one seems to work for me. However for this to work I need to keep taking hot water all day.
I have never performed sinus rinses for more than a month but find these even when done together with steroid nasal sprays have had little or no effect.
My right jaw has always been paining and I had erroneously concluded that my teeth were causing the sinus issues until I discovered pseudoephedrine. I had pursued a diagnosis of a osteomyelitis of the jaw as my symptoms were consistent however this was ruled out by a specialist I saw.
I noticed that when I took pseudoephedrine my symptoms improved greatly including the jaw and tooth pain leading me to conclude it was a sinus issue. Only down side was the insomnia and after a few days of taking it the rebound congestion got worse.
If you are having similar issues I suggest:
1. Drinking a lot of water at once. This though I later learnt is dangerous as it can affect your bodily balance. So medical supervision is a must.
2. Drinking hot water consistently during the day
3. Mucinex- mucus thinner
4. Pseudoephedrine – decongestant
I will update as I explore what else works for me.

The points you raise about the teeth is very interesting... I don't think it's worth exploring for me though as my teeth are actually very good .
Regarding your solutions, this is exactly what I've been doing and works very well to manage things but that's all it does, "manage" the symptoms yet not treat what ever is the underlying cause. Pseudoephedrine is realistically the only thing that works for me but it's dangerous to take it long-term, even for more than 3 weeks...

The grapefruit seed extract, I wonder if that provides Vitamin C. It is not listed on the bottle of capsules.

Not sure what you mean by "works for you" ... I didnt go vegan for health reasons. (although there was some weight loss and some health benefits) The throat clearing has been related to post nasal drip and allergies, not dairy or reflux . - This has been getting steadily worse with my age (starting long before going vegan)
The hardest part about being vegan is making my food from scratch and not being able to go out to dinner/breakfast for the past 3 yrs. ..I live in the middle of Dairyland and finding vegan anything is near impossible.

Hi Doug -- I toyed with the idea of excluding all dairy products for a long time as it's well-documented they can exacerbate mucus production and density (e.g. making it thick) in the throat, chest and nose.
So, I did it for 3 months religiously, but absolutely no effect for me unfortunately... I'm really happy it helped you though.

I usually take a spoonful of honey, and a spoonful of cinnamon with a spoonful of Black Seed and mix it all together. This should help with the taste. This is not a cure but it seems to help somewhat for me. I also, noticed that by taking NyQuil it seems to dried up the mucus. I was looking at the ingredients in NyQuil. And try to find out which ingredient was causing the drying effect. But yes, the Black Seed does taste nasty. I am somewhat used to the taste and can take a spoonful of it without the honey and cinnamon. But I only do it when I am being lazy or in a rush. I do hope it brings some comfort to you. Let me know if it works somewhat....
