20 years of marriage, and got diagnosed with herpes hsv2

Can you have no symptoms of.herpes.for 20 years and then have an initial outbreak?
My husband and I have been struggling with sex the past couple of years. I am very dry and sensitive in my vaginal area, and sex can be painful. 3 weeks ago, I felt a little less.dry than normal, so my husband and I tried to have intercourse. Our marriage has been less.thn normal and little rocky, so I thought, we need to reconnect intimately. When we started the intercourse though, we discovered I was really dry after all and the sex was painful. I asked, do we still have any ky. Well, my husband had purchased something other than ky and my vagina felt like
Thousands of needles had enfered my vagina. I had also just come off a round of anti-biotic, so we.chalked up this event to dryness due to yeast infection and soreness due to an alergic reaction to this trogan lubricant rather than the normal ky jelly.
2 days after this explosion and painful episode, my symptoms got worse... so I tried an ointment for the YI... my vagina was so much more sore after that... and I continied the treatment for 5 more days.
Well, after 7 dys total of imense burning itching, pain, and torture, I decided to go see my doctor. She could not see me for 2 more days... so I went to the internet for help.and learned about sitz baths.... this is the only thing that seemed to help.
I finally got in to see the doctor. She found one sore and sid she would like to check for HSV or herpes. She stafed that because I only had one sore, kt.was likely to be a "reccurence". I'm like, reccurence, I've never even had an "occurence". She said, lets just send this off and we will see what comes back. It will probably take a week. I freaked out, but said I would wait to find out the results. She also did 2 swabs to check for BV and a YI.
Okay, 2 days later, the results came back with a strong positive. Apparently that means this is an intial outbreak...well I have been faithful for 20 years....can my husband have had this all these years and just given it too me? I cant use condoms becuase of my sensitivity, so we never have. Please help me understand this. I tested positive for HSV 2 and I have never had chicken pox, shingles, a cold sore, or mono. The doctor would not tell me if my husband could go 20 years without symptoms. All I got was... it is hard to say, but it can lay dormant for years, but because your outbreak was so severe (such a high positive) that it is likey that I was only recently exposed.

I had 3 different doctors (one an OB-GYN) tell me that Herpes 2 can lie dormant for decades and some people never even have an outbreak, but they have it. Also you may never have another outbreak. Lysine Plus helps as well as good lubrication. My husband's doctor told him not to bother to get tested as he probably has it too. You are less contagious when you have no outbreak symptoms but odds are, your husband carries it as well.Once you both have it, it's not like you can give it back and forth. Now that I have had this shock, I am finding that more and more people have it and it's just another virus. Yes, painful though with outbreaks. Mostly outbreaks happen when the immune system is weak. I never had an outbreak in 30+ years but I was run down lately. Now I take immune building supplements and echinacea and have not had anymore problems. hope this helps.

I recently got the shock of my life. I had my very first break out., One very painful sore.I thought that I had cut or scratched myself and it was infected. I went to see the doctor and she said she was pretty sure it was genital herpes. I asked if she was going to take a swab and she said no.
And ordered me lab work to get blood checked. And she prescribed me antiviral drug.
I haven't received results yet from the bloodwork and do not know what to expect.
I thought she really needed to take a sample from the sore but she didn't.
I'm in a long time marriage and we are very committed and love one another. Husband says he hasn't been with anyone and I believe him and I haven't either. So he may have it too but has never had any symptoms either.Me neither.
So I'm figuring it has been dormant for years. I did have partners before marriage and husband did too. So who knows. It doesn't matter. I and we will Deal with it.
So here's what I think happened.
I have an autoimmune disease and recently symptoms flared up causing more pain and I'm under some stress too
And that's when the herpes break out it happened all around the same time. And so I've been feeling pretty horrible health wise.
I've Decided that I'll take l lysene and probiotics and clean up my eating habits.
To soothe the area, I've tried different things. Warm Salt baths I seem to like. Today I tried Desitin, the baby diaper rash cream. It has zinc in it. And It did help a little.
I tried Carmex (the lip balm) earlier on today, that wasn't bad either. Both these topical treatments for the blisters/sores I had read in other forums by other herpes sufferers.
I have been reading all I can to see how to combat this thing naturally.
I am not as anxious as I was and feel I need to just build my immune system up. Change some things. Hopefully it'll help my painful autoimmune disease too. And I am hoping it will prevent another break out.

I'm glad to read this, so I don't feel so weird and alone. I'm 57 and happily married for 10 years. This just popped up on me out of the blue. It's SO painful and uncomfortable I can hardly believe it. It's been a couple of weeks, and the Valtrex has helped the blisters but it's still really painful. My doctor recommended something called H-Balm to ease the discomfort, which are in drops. It helps, but it burns first. I hope it gets better soon. My doctor also tested me for Shingles and a couple of other more rare things, but I was positive for HSV2 with no antibodies.
I'm still considering whether to get a Shingles vaccine given how awful this has been. My husband had Shingles and it was awful too.
I hope everyone who has posted here is feeling well again and none of us get another outbreak.
