22 weeks post op TKR

Hi

I am 22 weeks post op and my physio says I have a very good bend 120 or so but I still feel as if I am not getting any further on....I don't see any improvement; I can walk with no pain but still get the tightness, especially when standing for five minutes or so, and still get the stiffness......and after cycling on the stationary bike for ten minutes, my knee is like a block of heavy wood. In bed when I turn over it is so so heavy. I can get upstairs but not happy doing a step down...

I get up in the morning and think "today I will see a change" but it's the same drudge every day....

My physio said I need to build up the muscles but for how long?

Does anyone else feel like this or is it just me....I don't see my surgeon until September (first appt in year).....

Any info would be good.

i agree elaine you need to build up the muscles 22wk is still early days ,so dont get disheartened ,remember that bend is very good god how i wish mine would bend that much .!! the heavy wood like feeling in the knee is what all of us felt at your stage the more the leg gets strongerthe less it will feel heavy .its a long road but it will improve

      Hi Irishlinda

      Thanks for your kind words...

It is a relief to hear that this is all the "norm" so to speak. Best wishes x

    Hi Elaine.

Swim!  I felt exactly the same so went swimming, or rather paddling - basically do your exercises in the water, pedal like a bike, etc, and it did me the world of good.  I'm now over 9 months and still go 2 or 3 times a week for 20 minutes and it makes me feel so much better.

      Hi Susan

Have only been once a week so I suppose I should go at least twice a week??

Cold weather makes the knee worse too, don't you think? X

Hi Elaine. I went 3 times a week For the first 3 or 4 months and it did me the world of good. I used to get one of those long bendy floats and sit on it front to back and pedal round like I was on a bike. I'd stand on one leg swinging the other in all directions, walking forwards, backwards, side wards -  I must have looked crazy but didn't care!

It also helped my mind as I got quite depressed. And yes, I suffer in the cold too.

    Bend and extension good

    Walking and stairs all good.

    Just a note of caution.

I found the weights too much for my knee!

    They definitely set me back.

So if your starting to use them take it very very easy.

    Stay safe
