2nd Hip replacement.

I’ve just had the pre op assessment for my hip replacement which is scheduled for June 20th. I had the other hip replaced 10 years ago. Unfortunately that hip dislocated-twice!- necessitating a revision after 5 months. I can remember the pain. Horrendous. Anyway, I’m asking on here if surgery has improved over the last 10 years? I believe this op will be with a spinal anaesthetic which will be great, I had a knee replaced this way 2 years ago. Plus I’m terribly sick with a GA.

Can I ask anyone who has just had their hip done how you found it, how mobile are you now, and will I have a long scar like my other hip?  How many nights were you in hospital?  Did you have knee pain also, and has that resolved since?  My pain goes right down to my shin.  I am in a great deal of pain right now, I’m walking like an old person. I need a stick indoors and really limit my trips outside. I take Tramadol, Amitriptyline and Naproxen, and Severodol for as needed. I’m being looked after by a different surgeon, and even a different hospital. This morning I was phoned by Occupational Health re aids I may need.  So that’s all sorted.

By the way, I’m in the UK.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for any info.

Hip surgery has changed a lot over the years and so have the prostheses. I had a spinal which I had never heard of before. I opted for no sedation although you can have a little or a lot as you want.  I wanted to know what was going on. It is a great improvement on a general and I was able to talk to the surgeon during the op. I was in a wheelchair just before surgery and in awful pain. Unfortunately I reacted badly to morphine and was very sick, so I can’t become a drug addict! I was given Tramadol and paracetamol although I did not take the Tramadol at all. I took the paracetamol as I felt I ought to but gave up after around five days. I got raised loo seats from OH. I was given crutches but was such rubbish with them I left them at the front door when I came back from hospital and have not used them since. I use a stick outside and furniture surfed inside. This was my first hip op and I was a amazed at how good it was. My sister who came and stayed for a week, decided I should go out to lunch the day after I got home, in hindsight that is not such a good idea. All my friends said typical of my sister. Good luck with your op.

I was really scared of having an operation, I am 61 and never been in hospital, do not take tablets, do not do illness as such. My hubby pushed me into having hip replaced as my penguin walk was getting worse and some days I needed my stick around the house, even standing was painful. I did have pain in the groin, thigh, knee and a terrible throbbing in the shin which always happened in bed, I could not sleep with that. Got the hip problem from a fall in december 2009, started with a pain in groin in october 2010, slowly got worse over the years.

Did not feel the spinal injection at all, last thing I remembered was a nurse turning me on my side and putting my arm on a rest, next thing it was over, the op took about an hour. Had op wednesday lunchtime, went home friday afternoon. The worst thing was the painkillers causing constipation and sickness but I

refused them on the friday and just took paracetamol home. I have had no pain since op and I have level legs for the first time in years.

      Julie,

After going through this 8 weeks ago, do not worry about the injections, they numb the area first so you do not feel the injection going in.

You may have read on here after the op you have to sleep on your back, unless that is natural for you, I would get some practice in. Lying on your back can make it impossible to sleep and that, I think is the one thing everyone seems to agree on.

Julie, we could keep in touch. I'm hoping this op in 2 week's will put right 3 things. Even my leg lengths up, help realign my spine in the correct way plus I've been troubled with a bursitis in the hip. Right over the hip bone, and the surgeon has said he'd try remove the Bursa. I've had more pain from that over the last 10 years than the hips put together. I've been to pain clinics, acupuncture, more and more painkillers, just goes on and on.

One good thing is that I can sleep on my back having had to over the years.

Don't worry about your op, I'll be able to let you know what to expect! Best wishes

Jen, when did you have your hip replacement? Yours sounds a good positive outcome. I had the spinal injection when my knee was replaced two years ago, and like you I couldn't remember a thing, apart from the nurse saying your legs may feel a bit hot, and they did and that was that! How long post op did you feel "back to normal "?Thanks, Best wishes

      Hi Lucie,

I will be 8 weeks tomorrow, I suppose 3/4 weeks before I started to feel human again. I have been feeling great up until last night when my shoulder was uncomfortable, then I woke up at 1.30 am with a pain to the side under the breast. I have nevet felt pain like it so, it was up to the doctors this morning, he is worried it is a clot, he said if pain gets worse go to A & E, sent me for an x-ray, waiting for results.

I am not sure if sleeping on my back is not causing problems, I have been waking in the night with a bad back. It is a set back as I needed to drive by friday and was going on my elliptical walker this week to build the muscle up.

Oh dear Jen, that's not what you want. I hope it's nothing more than a bad position and you'll get the OK.. Fingers crossed for you, x

      Hi Lucie,

I hope your operation went well and will give you a new lease of life and many years of service.

I could not get back to you, as I had very bad pain, had to call an ambulance the upshot was yes I have clots in the lungs.

How this has happened is a mystery as it is not in the family, I walk a lot and eat a good diet. Doctor said it happens sometimes, just one of those things, you are unlucky. Now I have been put on a three month cause of apixaban, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Oh no! That's not good, but at least they sorted you quickly. Didn't go to theatre till 3pm, got back on ward 6ish. Everything seems OK, he's managed to lengthen leg a little.

Hope your course of injections do the trick. xx

    Hi Lucie

I had my hip replacement last Tuesday went into hospital sat as emergency fell off my bike !! Had to wait for surgeon til Tuesday had spinal anaesthetic don't remember a thing! Recovery was quick no sickness nothing

out of bed Wed light steps but manageable with pain relief sleep awful as you can only sleep on your back . Thursday managed on crutches walk, toilet, and up and down stairs with pain relief.

Friday home still wobbly but painkillers are great coping brill but do get tired more easily. No pain anywhere else except hip which is like dull ache nothing in leg or shin

    I'm taking paracetamol ibuprofen

    codeine( only at nights)

    Morphine( nights )

I had my op at derby teaching hospital as we were away for weekend and live in bolton!!!!

Scar well my dressing not been removed yet so from the size of this i would say no bigger than 7 inches

I had a revision on a 20 year old hip from a bike accident and it has dislocated twice in 4 months!!!  This is a nightmare.   Anyone had dislocations?

Hi, my 1st hip dislocated twice too! This was ten years ago. Once about 10 weeks out, the 2nd 6 weeks after that. The latter time I was back at work. OMG! I never knew I could scream, and I screamed with the pain. Every movement was agony. The following week I had a revision with a deeper socket being made. But you've had the revision already? How long ago was that? I'm just hoping this new hip stays in place, two weeks tomorrow I have it done. Already had the occ health on the phone and all their paperwork too!

Fingers crossed for you, keep in touch?

Hi Lucie, both hips done since I was born with bi lateral hip dysplasia. I do have restrictions to reduce chance of dislocation and I followed them to a T. I was also advised to strengthen all my muscles, glutes, hip abductors quads so I do the exercises twice a day every day. I also go to a movement enhancement class in a therapy pool 3 x/week and do resistance trainings. No more dislocation so I touch wood. My hips look like a treasure map after 32 surgeries and I do not wear bikinis but I have learnt to answer that question of what happened to you? My hubby does not care and I consider them my battle wounds. I also don't judge others because I hate when people pity me. Get your surgeon to give you the exercises, take the pain killers because a resection takes longer to heal, since it is more trauma. Listen to your body but push forward. Have goals. Mine were to get off the hydromorphone and take care of my garden and family. Take it one day at a time and cherish life, friends. Best of luck.

Hi Claudia, can't have expressed myself properly, my right hip was done 10 years ago, and dislocated twice necessitating a revision. All OK since. The other hip is getting replaced tomorrow!! The hospital phoned this afternoon and had a cancellation. So I'll be there at 7am. Gulp!
