2nd Hip replacement.

I’ve just had the pre op assessment for my hip replacement which is scheduled for June 20th. I had the other hip replaced 10 years ago. Unfortunately that hip dislocated-twice!- necessitating a revision after 5 months. I can remember the pain. Horrendous. Anyway, I’m asking on here if surgery has improved over the last 10 years? I believe this op will be with a spinal anaesthetic which will be great, I had a knee replaced this way 2 years ago. Plus I’m terribly sick with a GA.

Can I ask anyone who has just had their hip done how you found it, how mobile are you now, and will I have a long scar like my other hip?  How many nights were you in hospital?  Did you have knee pain also, and has that resolved since?  My pain goes right down to my shin.  I am in a great deal of pain right now, I’m walking like an old person. I need a stick indoors and really limit my trips outside. I take Tramadol, Amitriptyline and Naproxen, and Severodol for as needed. I’m being looked after by a different surgeon, and even a different hospital. This morning I was phoned by Occupational Health re aids I may need.  So that’s all sorted.

By the way, I’m in the UK.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for any info.

Hi folks, came home Saturday evening.  That night was endless, couldn’t get comfy, scared to move. Hospital was ok, I’m black and blue from trying to get cannula in prior to theatre. I had the spinal and HEARD them hammering!!!  I had the most wonderful anaesthetist, telling me what was happening and keeping me calm. Then back on recovery, then back on the ward. Had to wait till 3pm for the theatre, but back, eating a delicious sandwich at 6pm.  My stay lasted 3 nights, a little complicated by my hb dropping to 72, but 2 units of blood sorted that out. I’m more mobile than I thought, and undoubtedly helped by the Oxycodone I’m on for 7 days.  I’ll add to this tomorrow as my favourite tv drama is just starting!     Keep well everyone x

I had bruises on both hands as they messed up on drips after the op and also during the blood transfusion. I looked like I had been in a boxing ring. The banging during the op did not bother me, it was the drilling that made my chest vibrate that I found weird. It did mean the surgeon could talk to me though.

      Hi Lucie,

I had to smile when I read that you were scared to move, I felt like that as well. It took me a few days to feel comfortable moving around and realise I would not to damage.

You were do lucky to be able to enjoy your sandwich. We were given a cup of tea (heaven) and 2 toast but I was so dry if took all night to eat the toast, I was so hungry as well.

I am pleased you are now on the road to recovery and hope it all goes well for you.

Hi, thanks, feel so much more human now. The thing that is causing me pain is the operated knee! Think really I had this before as walking so differently. Plus all the swelling on that leg is going right down the leg now.

      Onwards and upwards xx

Hi folks, I’m now exactly 3 weeks to the day after my hip replacement. I’m feeling sooooo much better. Better than I even expected to. When I walk I have no pain, none of the awful wearing down relentless Pain that comes from one bone being on another. I have a little muscle niggle, obviously where my muscles and flesh were cut through. My dressing comes off tomorrow, there was a stubborn couple of inches that hadn’t knitted together in the centre, but no big deal.   Yesterday and today I walked with our new puppy for a good 45 minutes in the park - and enjoyed walking!!!    Something I’ve not done for years.   The surgeon has removed the bursa which had been inflamed for 8 or 9 years, and caused me so much pain and many sleepless nights. Last week going to the loo in the middle of the night I came back forgetting my stick, and now I mostly manage without one inside the house. I am walking upright and not hobbling like a one footed penguin!   I am so pleased and thankful to the super surgeon for repairing my broken body and making it work again.   😊
