2nd hip replacement

Hi all, just wanting anyone to give me any info at all I will be having my hip replacement replaced in 2 to 3 months time. It's lasted 13 years the plastic liner has worn away, after many tests over last few months the surgeon says it definitely need replacing. Question as I keep telling him I am not in pain, the pain I had before met first hip replacement was horrendous, I also had a limp. After the op I was pain free and no limp. This time it's different, yes it can ache and the odd slight bit of pain. Just wondering if I should hang on a bit as I am only 49. Has anyone had experience of this? Any comments will be helpful, thanks Tracy here in Morecambe.

Hi, I've seen 2 different people at the hospital , one my surgeon and the other a member of his team, they both say 20 years with new hip. Thing have changed a lot in 13 years!!

I hope so. 13 years would only take me till im 33yrs old. I was told they can last between 15 to 30 years. So i really hope so

Well that's what I was told. So your very young for all of this, but it's worth it all in the end, it completely changed my life x

Hi Tracey, I met someone a few weeks ago who was just going in for her second hip replacement. Having just had two of my own I was curious what she felt as symptoms. She also said she didn't have much pain but her hip had given out on her and she had been referred to the surgeon. He said that it was loose and would do more damage if it was left there.

If your plastic liner/cup has worn away will they just replace that?

I was told, that with care, I could preserve my hips for anything up to 25 years - at 53 I am going to treat them like royalty!

Hi Kate, no they will put a brand new hip in, no point just doing ball, as I've had it 13 years. Glad to hear someone else has been like myself, he did say it would get worse but like I say living with OA before my first THR this time it's nothing like that. Thanks again for your comment it does help

If there is no chance of any damage, I would hang on, especially if you are not in pain. Leave it as long as you can, so you won't need a further revision down the line.

This is my personal opinion and not a medical one, so there might be a good reason for replacing now, but if there isn't and the quality of your life is still very good and you are virtually pain free I would leave it well alone for as long as possible.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do x

PS I was told possibly upward of 35 years for my replacement, if I look after it properly, so whenever you do need to have it done, it will last for  much longer this time hopefully.

      I wish...I was told 15 to 20 on the plastic liner..ugh

Thanks Rose, each time I go it's the same answer it needs doing, the know I want to hang on I've voiced this believe me, but they all say the same sooner is better. Let's hope it's last this time. Thanks for your comment .

Hi, I know they told me 20 years, but I don,t think for one minute it will last that long, because we are too active when we are younger. Yeah the plastic liner has worn away causing debris to attach around the bone lower down, they showed it to me on the X-ray.

I just had my replacement in May, I'm going to ask why he used the plastic liner and not ceramic on ceramicquestionrolleyes

      Tracy,

Is that plastic debris, or bone debris (Heterotopic ossification where bone forms in the muscle) ?

      see Heterotopic ossification in Wikipedia.

      Hi Graham,

its called osteolysis. You can see it onthe Xray. So Obviously this is another reason - the plastic liner has caused this.

Aha - I see that in wikipedia, the exact opposite of ossification then.

So many complications for this supposedly 'routine' procedure.

Bone in muscle, loss of bone, split femur, misplaced components, cut muscle, nerve damage, swelling, DVT, infections, ceramic breakage, parts wearing out - off the top of my head.  Let alone the mental and physical hardships we and our partners endure.

Do keep posting here Tracy, it's only by listening to others like yourself that we learn so much and manage to help others coming along behind us on the THR roller-coaster.

Best wishes for a successful outcome for you

      Graham
