2nd hip replacement

Posted , 12 users are following.

Hi all, just wanting anyone to give me any info at all I will be having my hip replacement replaced in 2 to 3 months time. It's lasted 13 years the plastic liner has worn away, after many tests over last few months the surgeon says it definitely need replacing. Question as I keep telling him I am not in pain, the pain I had before met first hip replacement was horrendous, I also had a limp. After the op I was pain free and no limp. This time it's different, yes it can ache and the odd slight bit of pain. Just wondering if I should hang on a bit as I am only 49. Has anyone had experience of this? Any comments will be helpful, thanks Tracy here in Morecambe.

    hi Tracy

it's good that you are not in pain now and probably fit. ..

perfect time to have the surgery before it gets worse .

maybe there will be no need for artificial hips in 15 -20 years anymore as stem cell therapy will be used.

    Big warm hug

I think the plastic ones wear out faster than the modern ceramic ones.  Do you know what type you will get this time?  Plastic or Ceramic?

Like everything else about THR, even Ceramic are not without problems - as I found out.

If not properly fitted, they can chip, or shatter.  I was speaking to someone at myhospital who had one shatter, apparently it is noisy when they do 'go', but not painful.

      Hi Graham,

the doctor I saw on saturday said - they are more likely to shatter and some of his patients say the 'squeak' when they walk!!! FGS!!!! that would do my head in!!!!!!!!! fingers crossed.

Well you wouldn't expect plastic to shatter, so I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that ceramic can shatter, just try dropping a wall tile.

Some do squeak, lack of joint fluid I suppose.

Keep the fingers crossed, not the legs !

    Well tracy,

I had a THR last Septmber and asked how long it would last. The reply was 30 to 40 years, which surprised me, I must admit.

    Does that help at all?

Hi Tracy hip, Sorry to hear about your troubles, both my hips were replaced when l was 40, have worn out and disintegrating and creating voids in my pelvis, they have lasted 27 years but probably should have had them checked more regularly as just ignored the pain. Have been waiting 8 months to see a specialist unit 800 miles from home. Would have thought scans would have shown up any severe problems on yours but at the end of the day guess it's up to you what happens next. My dilemma is do l want to go through complex operations at 67!? Thinking of you, Tony

      Hi Tony,

wow - 27 years is along time to go - Yes at 67 its a scary thought - Obviously putting in new hips and taking out the old worn out ones is a much bigger procedure - I have had all this epxlained to me- at the end of the day we are in their hands aren't we? Good luck - is your op soon?

Aw tony just read your post on this thread. Sorry about that.

I am 68 and can sympathise. We don't bounce back as fast at this age, do we? Well, if it is any consolation to you I have had broken femur, removal of metal and THR all in the last three years.

I am walking without a stick and driving the car. Hips are lasting longer so this one will "see me out".smile
