Karen - have you had your visit from occupational health yet, they will go through all your requirements in you house/home, and or pre-surgery appt, they also will go through chairs, and or adjustments needed for your home. Most helpful.

I know we are in different countries, but my appointment is on January 21 and I have not had the appointment either - so perhaps there is time yet. Good luck with the op.

Karen - Pre op and Surgery very close together, I would see if they could bring your appt a little bit further apart.

My head was still spinning from pre-op a week later, let alone 2 days later. Its a really big day, if you are public, with interviews, chemists, anthestist, junior surgeon, physiotherapists, nurses doing ECG, and swabs for bacteria, etc, although I can also see the advantages, not enough time to worry about what you have been told.

I was thinking the same thing. I might give them a call on Monday and see if what they say. I am not sure if they do it differently here in Australia. Where are you?

      Hi Lyn,

I called and they have moved my pre-op appt up to Jan 18th so thats better for me I think if i havent got something I will have plenty of time to get it :-)

Call me clumsy but I like more grabbers. I have two story home and have 3 upstairs and two down. We got them for $1 each so no big investment but they are the most essential things for me. (I drove myself to work for the first time yesterday and dropped my KEYS in the parking lot!!-- NO grabber!!)

The other thing I have really enjoyed is a tray that fits on my walker.  i am able to get and transport my own coffee in the a.m. but also use it to carry lots of other things from one room to another. I will be 6 wks post op on Monday. Good luck to you! You sound well ready.

Thank you Gail i have ordered 2 but i think i will get more as everyone says the same things that they are lifesaver 😀

That was a question i did have does the physio decide whether you have walker, crutches etc?

Here in Queensland you get what they call canadian crutches, or elbow crutches. They were in doubt for me which would be best, due to my arthritis, but the elbow crutches were and are very good even for me, and they were the first crutches offered to me.

The physio was carrying full length crutches as well, I vetoed the use of full length due to shoulder pain, felt I would be better on elbow crutches, and that turned out to be the case.

Once you get used to the crutches you become really good at walking with them to support you, and the physios do teach you the correct method of using them.

thank good to know, i am hoping to use the elbow crutches as they look easier that full length crutches which i had to use a few years back after surgery on foot and they were a nightmare.

Hows your shower set up - that is going to be one of the questions they ask, walk in or over the bath. If it is over the bath you are gong to have problems. come back to me, maybe I can help if close.

We have walk in shower thankfully and once i can shower if easier i can shower at our business as we built diabled toilet with shower, handrails etc. so could prove to be useful 😀

So where did you have yours done?

I am booked in at Mater Private Hospital

Thank goodness you have a walk in shower, makes life sooo much easier, getting over a bath edge is a little more difficult, even with a bath board chair.

We live in Recliffe, but all of my various surgeries have been done at Pr Charles, or Royal Brisbane.
