5 days post RTHR

Hi all, sorry I haven't been on in a few days. I've been busy doing my exercises, relearning to walk etc. I was discharged from hospital yesterday evening after having my dressing changed & going up & down 2 flights of stairs (as I live in a 2 storey house). I get now why everyone calls them physio terrorists, but if they didn't do their job Id still be in hospital. I find some of the physio exercises on the bed quite painful but the physio gave me a slider sheet t make them a little easier. I cannot believe how quickly I have gotten over the op & am walking quite well with 2 crutches. I even had a little wander around my garden this morning in the beautiful autumn sunshine navigating the 3 steps outdoors. As far as pain goes it's no worse than I would have expected after such a big op. I have approx 12" scar 28 staples (nurse counted them). Starting to get a nice black bruise on my behind & swelling to my thigh & knee. Ankles are fine so far probably due to my sexy stockings😃. In hospital I was brought a pillowcase of bagged ice chippings 3 times a day. At home I'm using frozen peas in a pillow case. Doing the same job only they don't stay frozen as long. I'm off all painkillers,I was taking pre,op & am only on minimal amount of pain relief along with aspirin for a month to,prevent clotting. Anti inflammatory twice a day & paracetemol 4 times a day. I was given a stronger fast acting pain med to take if pain goes abot 5/6 but haven't needed it yet thank God. I have always had a very high pain threshold so maybe that helps. We had to travel an hour & half from hospital & then pick up a prescription in pharmacy on the way home & I was delighted to be able to be a passenger without that old bone on bone pain. (The head of my femur was completely dissintigrated). Overall I'm so far extremely pleased with the outcome. I just hope it keeps improving day by day. To any pre op patients on here who are scared, try not to worry. I had a major panic attack the day before & morning of my surgery & the nursing staff, Dr & anaesthetist couldn't have been more supportive before during & after the op. I don't even remember being wheeled into Theathre & woke up to my surgeons big blue eyes & Hollywood smile & a bevy of beautiful nurses all looking out for me. Id just say go for it. You will never look back. I'm actually looking forward to having my LTHR done asap. I'll know more after my post,op apt 10 November. Enjoy the beautiful sunshine fellow hippies 😘

Glad to hear you are doing so well.  Be prepared for good days and bad.  Although even the bad days are tolerable. The key is to take your medicines, do your exercises and move frequently.  Get plenty of rest and consult this forum when you need support.

    Best wishes

Well done Gossip. Insead of the frozen peas my partner bought ice gel packs off line that go in the freezer. He bought them off ebay. Next to the grabber they are the next best helpful item and I still use them if I have done a bit too much. So glad you are on the other side with us now. Love Gillxxx

    hi gossip

I was like you had never been to hospital in my life dreaded the thought of an operation. I have never had children and at 62 years old just couldnt get my head round going into hospital.  However after my first operation left hip and now

16 weeks post operative I cannot wait for my right hip to be done on 5th october next week.

I am like you looking forward to it!

Glad everything went well for you and you are through the other side.

Yes the physio i tough and I call mine Miss Whiplash but try to do as much as possible as they are right it does help but it is hard when you have restricted your movements for years because of historic pain. all the best.

    Great Gossip, good for you.

So you are sleeping okay on your back?

That seems to be ith biggest problem for most people.

I prop myself up on several pillows to get comfy & eventually drop off to sleep. I usually wake to wee after about 3 hours as I'm still swollen but then sleep again for 3/4 hours & nap for 1/2 hrs in afternoon. Or even just lie in bed & read or call friends & return calls. I got a rash on my lower back from sleeping & perspiring in the same position but that's settling now that I'm out of hospital. It must've been the rubber coating on hospital mattress.
