SIXTY-SIX PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS: Part one 1 - 49

These are very real physical changes and conditions. Some symptoms alarm a woman that she may be suffering from a serious disease. Perhaps you know the more common ones related to menopausal symptoms in this list. But many of these may surprise you, as they have not been typically associated with this normal physiological transformation.

1. Change in Menstrual Cycle, Cycles may get closer together or farther apart, lighter and shorter in duration or much heavier, lasting longer than one has been accustomed to. Menses may seem to take forever to begin with dark spotting for days until you actually flow, or you might feel like you have your menses every two weeks.

2. Menstrual Flooding can come on with sudden onset and feel like you may hemorrhage to death. Or it can be a gradual build up just when you think your menses will end and you start gushing for days. Flooding commonly accompanies the woman with uterine fibroids as she transits into menopause.

3. Headaches, Migraines, especially before, during or at the end of your menses debilitate and radically interferes with normal functioning.

4. Decreased Motor Coordination, Clumsiness, almost begins to make the woman who experiences this feel like she is certainly less than graceful during perhaps an already awkward period in her life.

5. Lethargy, a persistent feeling sluggishness physically and mentally, that seems to negate ones ability to do much.

6. Physical Exhaustion , and Crushing Crashing Fatigue that can come on so suddenly and grip you into feeling like you will collapse unless you stop this instant.

7. Exacerbation of any Chronic Illness or Existing Condition transpires as hormones decline or deviate from their normal balance.

8. Insomnia, this includes a new or unusual pattern of either difficulty falling asleep, or dropping off to sleep for a few hours and then awakening with the inability to return to sleep.

9. Sleep Disturbances sometimes are from nightmares, night sweats, or just a vague sense of restlessness keeping you up or disrupting your precious revitalizing retreat from this realm of responsibilities.

10. Night Sweats often begin between a woman?s breasts, initially a night or two before her menses, waking her from sleep, later more profoundly disturbing with up to total body saturation, followed by damp or sweat drenched chills.

11. Interference With Dream Recall interrupts the sense of normal sleep, if you are someone accustomed to vivid or at least some detailed memory of your dreamtime.

12. Muscle Cramps can occur anywhere in the body from legs to back to neck, and sometimes reflects the need for more calcium, or simply that your progesterone levels are too low.

13. Low Backache often worsens before or during menses, but if your hormones remain at low levels, you can experience it on a regular basis.

14. Gall Bladder Symptoms of pain, spasms and discomfort felt in the right upper abdominal quadrant under the ribs, which may be accompanied by belching, bloating, and intolerance to certain foods reflect the increased liver load with declining hormones.

15. Frequent Urination, or sensations that mimic urinary infections is a disturbing symptom often unrelieved by actual urination. It is often experienced as the sensation of needing to urinate all the time, even immediately afterwards.

16. Urinary Incontinence, the uncontrollable and spontaneous loss of urine, or the Urge for Incontinence, can occur suddenly or feel continuous, and not only in response to coughing, sneezing, jumping or running.

17. Hypoglycemic Reactions happen when suddenly your blood sugar crashes and you must have food now.

18. Food Cravings, often for sweets or salty foods, but can include sour or pungent foods.

19. Increased Appetite, especially at night and after dinner contributes to that unusual and unwanted weight gain.

20. Dark Circles Under Eyes can also be caused by adrenal exhaustion and thyroid dysfunctions, but no amount of sleep seems to eliminate it.

21. Joint and Muscle Pain, Achy, Sore Joints, Muscles and Tendons, which sometimes develop into actual carpal tunnel syndrome, or give rise to the questioning of other disease possibilities.

22. Increased Tension in Muscles demonstrates itself in those hunched up shoulders as you work or talk about anything uncomfortable, along with promoting lower back pain and a stiff neck.

23. Increased Hair Loss or Thinning anywhere on body, including your head, armpits, pubic area.

24. Increase in Facial Hair especially under your chin, or along your jaw line. It may be defined by generalized hair growth, or a specific and coarse single strand of hair that pokes out, even curls.

25. Unusually Hair Growth, around Nipples, between Breasts, down your back, places where your hair was finer, less coarse.

26. Acne, quite disturbing to any woman who dealt with this in adolescence and never thought it would recur.

27. Infertility causes grief in the woman who postponed pregnancy in her earlier years and now wishes to conceive, carry to term a healthy baby, and discovers she is unable to do so.

28. Loss of Breast Tissue begins with the decrease of progesterone production. Women often feel as though their breast have become empty sacs devoid of their normal fullness, with or without sagging.

29. Breast Soreness/Tenderness/Pain/ Engorgement and swelling, occurs particularly a few days to one week before bleeding actually begins, which usually potentiates complete relief of any pain or swelling.

30. Painful, or tender nipples have been described as this exquisite localized pain only in the nipples and suggests estrogen excess.

31. Cold Extremities feels quite strange especially in the presence of a hot flash, the combination of which is not impossible.

32. Being Accident Prone, bumping into things, not even realizing it until the bruise reveals itself later and then lacking the ability to recall the causative incident feels perplexing and a little scary at the prospect of something more damaging.

33. Hot flashes initially may be described as mild to severe flushes of heat waves, and for some women these evolve into intense outbreaks of sudden heat with sweating and turning bright red all over.

34. Loss of Sexual Energy, our Libido, can be marked by a gradual or sudden disinterest in sex, to the development of an actual aversion.

35. Painful Sex often described as if one?s vagina would tear open at the point of penetration along with feelings of abrasion during intercourse.

36. Vaginal Dryness, Irritation, sometimes accompanied by a consistent unusual discharge - typically odor free, negates a woman?s ability to be sexually active, or able to enjoy or be comfortable in her body.

37. Dizziness, feeling lightheaded and the loss of physical balance, and even a bit wobbling at times, requires pause in movement to prevent falling over or deepening into vertigo or feeling faint.

38. Ringing in the Ears, Tinnitus, can be experienced as a pulsing sensation, a whooshing sound, an almost musical or buzzing sound with a fuzzy sensation.

39. Abdominal Bloating comes on suddenly often after eating, or seems to be all the time, and can be visibly evident making you feel that you look like you are pregnant.

40. Weight Gain disturbs most women, particularly when it seems to happen over a couple of days, settles in the waist, buttocks and thighs, promoting a visceral thickening from the waist down, the classic middle-aged figure.

41. Fluid Retention, Edema, commonly with swelling in the legs and ankles, though not limited to this area and it is unrelieved by urination.

42. Palpitations or Heart Racing usually comes on suddenly, without warning or provocation, and dissipates spontaneously. The experience can be so wild and intense that a woman may become alarmed and wonder if she is having a heart attack.

43. Irregularities in your Heart Rate may feel more like your heart has just done a flip-flop or skipped a beat.

44. Constipation/Diarrhea, intermittent or alternating, results from declining hormone levels, which increase the demands on liver function and alters intestinal motility.

45. Tendency towards Candidiasis can increase, even if you have no prior known history ? and if you do, it may worsen.

46. Gastrointestinal Distress, Increased Flatulence, Unrelieved Gas pains, Indigestion, Nausea all can reflect intestinal changes due to hormonal imbalances.

47. Slow Digestion often goes along with the bloat ? what previously took four to five hours to digest, now seems to take all night. It seems worse in the evenings.

48. Lack of Appetite may be experienced as more of a lack of interest in food, going to the frig and standing there with the door open and staring blankly. Feeling completely uninspired, you busy yourself with something else and forget that you need to eat.

49. Changes in Body Odor especially disturbing when it seems to focus in the groin area, but can be anywhere on the body.

50. Puffy Eyes, not only from sleep disturbances, but also can accompany low progesterone.

51. Facial Pallor alternating with Facial Flushes is often intermittent with hot flashes.

52. Flare up of Arthritis worsens with low progesterone levels and increase sugar intake.

53. Loss of Bone Density, Osteoporosis, is not only an elderly woman?s disease, though it seems to develop over an extended period and is triggered by the decline of hormone production.

54. Dry Hair, Change in Skin Tone, Integrity, and Texture, becomes more wrinkled, and may begin the thinning process.

55. Changes in your Fingernails characterized by easy breakage, bending, cracking and getting softer.

56. Itchy, Crawly Skin with a strange sensation like insects crawling around under the skin ? quite different than the dry skin feeling.

57. Muscle tone seems to slack and sag, and loose its previous response to normal exercise.

58. Pelvic Pain can be random and independent of cycles and may feel continuous for some women.

59. Dry, Itchy Eyes felt in the deep posterior aspect of the eye socket, as well as superficially.

60. Teeth Aching or the experience of a strange sensation in one?s teeth or gums, often accompanied by an increase in bleeding gums.

61. Change in the normal Tongue sensation, which can be accompanied by a feeling of burning in your tongue and roof of mouth, malodorous breath or change in breath odor, and/or a bad taste in your mouth.

62. Memory Loss or Lapses in time, makes one feel disoriented and less focused, especially when you go into another room to get something specific and seconds later cannot remember what you went to retrieve.

63. Feeling Faint for no known reason (this does not include standing up too quickly)

64. Tingling in Extremities not only feels weird and like your hands or feet are falling asleep, but if persistent can be a symptom of diabetes, B12, potassium or calcium deficiency, or a compromise in blood vessel flexibility.

65. Sensation of Electrical Stimulation,or Shock occurring in the tissue under the skin, and may signal you that a hot flash will begin.

66. Increase and worsening of Allergies occurs as hormones become imbalanced, so can our immune system.

It has been awhile since I have posted. I have been caring for my dog who was diagnosed with TCC bladder tumors and kidney disease. We thought we had it under control with great medication and food. But we lost her two weeks ago. My heart is broken. We just lost her sister 7 months ago and my cat a year before that.

Anyway, I am now 50 years old. How did I live this long with perimenopausal/menopausal symptoms and they haven't ended me, I will never know.

My most prominent issue right now is sore and burining gums. I mean really sore to the point I can't even floss without irritation. It just started. (again) I am sure if I go to my dentist they will give me the run around and recommend magic mouthwash (I hate it) and or otc pain meds. I grit my teeth now, which I think is making it worse. I have dry mouth horribly especially at night. Everything seems so worse at night. I have leg pain That starts in my calf and sometimes works itself upward. I worry that I have a blood clot working itself lose. IDK. All kinds of worrying, a few reasonable and many unreasonable go through my head.  I feel all of this is a deja vu. I haven't had a period for exactly one year. Maybe I was so caught up in taking care of my dog that I was able to put most of my issues on the back burner. But when I get hit with multiple issues it is stressful and overwhelming.

The idea of going in to the doctor/dentist again for "help" is so depressing because it has always been pointless in the past.

I am sorry for being such a downer. I just am so incredibly depressed. I just screamed at my husband last night because he was trying to "help" by suggesting I call my doctor AND my dentist in the morning, take the magic mouthwash, etc. He doesn't understand. But to be fair I really don't understand me either.

I have become so obsessively worried over ever big and little thing. I don't even know who I am anymore, I am nothing like the carefree person I used to be before this symptom obsessed monster took over.

When I go through the myriad of issues, suspecting they might be horrible hormone related but never sure if it is something more sinister. It is daunting the hoops I feel I must jump through to find that there is really no "help". Just a bunch of suffering, worry, anger, crying. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. It never seems to end. I am afraid to go to the doctor/dentist, (I am sure my files are red flagged by now lol) but I am afraid not to.

Now I don't even have my dog. I am a complete hopeless mess. Sorry I am just a sad sack mess who needed to vent. Thank you all and this site.

Hi Keljo, thankfully we have this forum to share our experiences. I find women I know just dont talk about their menopausal problems so I assume they've been OK. I find I cant cope with small and big things now, not like I used to. I'm sure losing your pets has been very tough. I'd like to think all my symptoms at age 51 are low/out-of-balance hormones but cant be sure, lots of anxiety about health and whether I can cope with illness, cope at work etc. Life has suddenly become too hard. And you're not the only one with red flags on doctor's files, it's quite hard to keep going to the doctor and speak up, I'm so tired of it

      Hi Keljo,

I am so sorry about your pets. Pets are family members and it is so hard when you lose them. Thinking of you. - Sarah

Ohhhh Keljo,  first in for most I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your furry family. So unbelievably painful, take your time in grieving, because it is the same as losing a family member. That is way too much loss in a very short time😔 There’s a beautiful poem called, Rainbow Bridge, you may already know it, Google it, it’s beautiful, I would copy paste but it’s too long. First realize that you are describing basically everyone on here, I certainly know you are describing me to the T.  How about the dark thoughts that go through your head, that’s something most people don’t discuss. Someone else did say it on here briefly, but it is frightening.  I think what happens during menopause is that “intrusive thoughts“ are introduced to we women going through this. I think it has to do obviously with the fluctuation of hormones. The leg thing you are describing me completely, I had it last night and it about drove me freaking crazy. Are you able to sleep on your side, I’m a side sleeper and I can’t even sleep on my side because if I turn on my side it makes the pain in the legs worse. You don’t have a blood clot, unless it’s red and hot to the touch or unless you have that history in your family, that’s not what it is. Fish oil is a natural blood thinner and so is Vit. E, you could take those (if your not on other meds, if so Ck w/ pharmacist) to like oats the fear of blood clots.  I thought that’s what I had as well,  it’s just the usual mean-O-pause signs. I use Restless Legs by Natrabio, 800-243-9245, if you cant find locally. I take a menopause support w/ black Cohosh and Isoflavones. It has much more in it then that and it’s very helpful. Helps to even keep the dark thoughts at bay and that horrible feeling of dread. It’s by a local pharmacy in Marseilles IL, if you google it, maybe you can charge it & they will ship to you.  It is ridiculous how you feel hopeless in going to the doctor regarding any symptoms.  I feel the same exact way. And I know what you mean about snapping on your husband, it’s a common occurrence  in my house. Do you have a natural path in your area, if you do they could be greatly helpful.  It is beyond ludicrous this is the year to 2018 and there’s no perfect formulation for this, but maybe it’s meant to be that way.  I always tease and say Eve just  had to eat that damn 🍎  and screw it all up 😂 Do you use a Essential oil‘s, maybe you could make a mouthwash of Essential Oils & Spa they are wonderful. Lavender Essential Oil is also great for the leg pain. I believe the best brand is Doterra, you could find a rep in your area by googling it.  I started with a new doctor recently, not regarding mean-o- pause but what appears to be some heart issue I have. It isn’t the SVTs, which is the heart palpitations, it’s something much more serious. So I’m on a heart monitor for a month, if you get those heart palpitations, you can do what is called the Valsalva movement, if you cough hard it usually gets rid of them .  I also find that if I breathe out of my mouth very slow and steady it seems to get rid of them also. Anyway... my doctor is from the Middle East and he is into holistic methods. He advised me to take 5HTP and L-Theanine at bedtime to help sleep. I still have to get it but I believe that that will help with the leg issues as well. And the L-Theanine is also used for anxiety, so he said I could take that during the day. He gave me the name of a natural sleep product called ‘Restful Sleep’, by Olly, purple container,  can’t remember if that’s the name, I will have to check.  But if you Google natural sleep products by Olly,  it should come right up on Google.  You know to cut out sugar, caffeine and alcohol don’t you, it increases the sum does around asleep, especially sugar and caffeine. Caffeine, I don’t know why, does something horrible to we women that are going through this.  I swear if I have a strong coffee turns me into a freaking monster. I sure do miss a good cuppa ??  Also watch what you wear  as far as clothing, polyester, spandex, like raw all mimic estrogen and will throw you into a hot flash. You need to stay with natural fibers like cotton, hand, linen etc.  For the hot flashes, I have a spray bottle with water, a little bit of alcohol and several drops of peppermint essential oil, it’s fabulous. I apply to the center of my chest, my forearms

, under breasts, and the top of  legs,  right at the bottom of the torso, very refreshing. Your not alone, remember that💓

      Hi, Keljo,

I'm so sorry you're going through all of this. I am terribly sorry for the loss of your beloved pets. That loss is truly heartbreaking. I understand your comments. I have so many different symptoms everyday, I don't even know who I am anymore. I'm 47 and in Peri for 5 years. I have so many symtoms I feel like I'm going crazy. I've given up on traditional medicine. Everytime I went to the doctor they just continued to layer on the medications (mostly stomach related and anxiety). At one point I was taking 32 pills a day. I was absolutely miserable. I began seeing a natural wellness physician (a woman). I thought she would understand my symptoms (she's about 5 years my junior), but her only main recommendation was for me to begin BHRT because all my tests showed that my hormone levels were basically non-existent despite having a period about every 45-50 days. She said it was as if I was in full menopause. She told me it would definitely get worse before it got better. I'm afraid to take the hormones for fear of feeling worse and simply do not want to go back for another visit because I chose not to follow this doctor's guidance.

Right now my symptoms are GERD and gastritis (was diagnosed with this 20 years ago), hot flashes, bloating, belly pain, anxiety, panic, joint pain, phantom gall bladder pain (I had my gall bladder removed 9 years ago), lower back pain, burning muscle pain, and just general sharp jabs and pokes of pain throughout my body. It makes me want to cry all the time. It's like this persistent illness with so many symptoms that you don't even know what to treat.

I want you to know you are most definitely alone in this! I know one day this is all supposed to pass. I'm desperately clinging to that. Please do whatever you need to do to take care of you. Keep checking into this forum. The ladies on this site have given me hope and strength when I haven't found it elsewhere. Please let me know how you're getting on. Big hugs--Sarah

Just wondering if anyone is having IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)-like symptoms and how do you deal with it? Can hormonal changes / fluctuations really have an effect on this? Thanks in advance.
    • Posted

Yes, it can. Your hormones control everything in your body and when they are out of whack, anything can happen. Digestive problems is definitely one of the symptoms.

    Hi jayneejay,

IBS is a very common symptom of menopause.  I am post menopause now, I’m 57 and it’s been years since I had a period. My first meno symptoms, years ago, were chronic IBS. It came out of nowhere when my periods stopped. I had chronic constipation, colon pain, spasms , acid reflux, pain in my upper stomach left side, my whole tummy area and chest area was very sensitive to touch, if I laid my hand gently on my tummy or between my breasts I would feel very nauseous and serious discomfort and pain, I felt unwell most of the time , my toilet habits was horrendous, my poo was very hard small round balls, and only opened my bowels one a week, mostly with help using suppositories. At the same time I had excess gas that caused a lot of pains, and chronic hot flashes, which felt connected to my IBS,  also connected was dark horrible thoughts which scared me,  over the years I’ve tried everything, I’ve been on / off HRT, I’ve tried various dietary changes and tried several supplements and I am not as bad today, but I do still have Symptoms daily.  I do have no hope days when I get tired of the fight, This forum has helped a lot , all you lovely ladies Sharing your experience has helped me a lot and I am very grateful to you, god bless you all thanks Jules xxxxx

      Hi Jules,

I understand everything that you’re saying. I’m 47 and have been in peri for about 5 years. I was diagnosed with GERD and Gastritis in my early 20s. Right now I’m deal with a horrible flare up. It hurts to eat and even to drink water. I take a PPI and I was given BHRT by my natural wellness physician, but have been afraid to take it because of the side effects. I feel like I’m going crazy. Seriously. My digestion is off, I can’t eat without getting that burning, gnawing pain so then I don’t eat and it becomes a viscous cycle. I feel a lot of anxiety and panic. It is extremely debilitating. I just want to feel well!  I also get these symptoms: erratic periods, hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, muscle and joint pain, low back ache, a fuzzy feeling in my head, and the list goes on and on.

I am trying to improve my diet, drink more water, and do some light exercise because those things have helped me in the past.

I am so sorry you’re dealing with this. I wish you the best of health and know that you are not alone!  —Big hugs, Sarah

Hey Jules, thank God somebody else is saying this. That chest pain that you said is for real, that is exactly how my chest is, but it’s been that way for years. Do you also have costochondritis, and do you have fibromyalgia. I thought these were fibromyalgia symptoms. And yes, when I hit a year with no periods within days, the IBS started. Only I would have to run to the bathroom and it would be loose stools or diarrhea. I always had perfect bowel movements. And the spasms  in the bowels, and other pains as you described, I have those two. That’s why we all think we’re dying, that’s why we think we have colon cancer, heart problems etc. All the symptoms are a nightmare.  I have faith in God, but quite honestly, sometimes I’m just like, what’s going on here God, for real why ?! I am currently wearing a heart monitor for 30 days, because my Dr.  wants to make sure it is SVTs I’m having.  I was telling a friend of mine, that I read recently, that menopause symptoms are permanent. I had never heard that before ever 😳  I was told by my nurse practitioner that we women should not be put on HRT because our bodies are naturally not making that and that our bodies have to adjust. But darn it ...sure seems necessary.  Can I ask why you have been on and off HRT?   I know this is a struggle.

Hello Sarah, have you ever tried Carafate for your gastritis, I had a terrible flareup of gastritis after accidentally eating a piece of fresh garlic at a party  a couple years back.  The Carafate can really help .  My doctor just advised me that 5HTP and L-theanine can help you sleep. He also said to take the L-theanime throughout the day, because it helps with anxiety.  Do you take a probiotic, that helps greatly also.  To be honest with you, ever since I had my gallbladder removed, the gastritis has been much much better, like significantly. Do you still have your gallbladder. I do know what you mean about the gnawing pain with gastritis, it can be awful.   Have you ever tried bone broth, bone broth is very very healing. If you made a habit of drinking that, I think it may help the gastritis.

And yes Jules, the joint pain is ridiculous. Have you noticed it depends on what you eat, it is worse. I just had some crackers and the pain started immediately in my right knee, so I’m like, is that celiac‘s disease? I knew I had a gluten intolerance, but  it’s significantly noticeable.  I can’t tell what’s my fibromyalgia and whats menopause, it’s like they have just blended together and made a  syndrome of their own. Grrrr

      Hi Lisa,

Thank you so much for the suggestions!   I will definitely try them.  I prefer anything natural to prescription drugs whenever possible. I had my gallbladder removed about 8 years ago and it did improve the frequency of my symptoms overall. Strangely now when I do get a GERD or gastritis flare up I’ll get those weird phantom gallbladder pains—like I still have it. It doesn’t happen every time, but once in awhile. So bizarre. My aunts who are through menopause now have commented on similar symptoms as they were transitioning.

I will most definitely try the bone broth. Anything to help settle this crazy stomach.

Thank you very much.  Wishing you excellent health!  Xoxo Sarah

Thank you, Jules.  I definintely understand the need to vent the frustrations with all this.  I really find it does help to type out these awful feelings in order to get a grip on everything that’s going on!  Take care if you and I will keep coming back to this forum as it’s the only thing that’s keeping me sane right now!!  Xoxo, Sarah
