8 days post op

Hi

Had TAH with ovaries removed and now my head feels clustered, having

headaches daily, is this a side effect of menopause or just my body getting over the op? Having a few hot moments but nothing too major, I m also

struggling to sleep at night and only having 1-2 hours in an afternoon.

Anybody else struggled with similar problems?

I just had my op on Monday the 6th. I am feeling great for the most part but I am noticing that I'm not able to sleep much and I have been having some headaches. I will see my gyn on Thursday the 16th so hoping she can shed some light on it.

Looks like these headaches are more common than I thought. I was led to believe I d be asleep all the while for first couple of weeks too, how wrong it is for me. Good luck for 16th!

I was expecting to sleep more - I was awake most of the night just taking short naps.  It's only the last 2 nights I have slept 7 hours I have not slept in the day since I had my op 3 weeks on monday

Oh god Judy, so you wasn't tired either? I m only having naps of a night at the moment and haven't slept in the day for last 2 days. I should be really tired but just don't feel it. Hopefully my slept pattern will return as yours has. Thanks for info x

I am very surprised that some of you were told that you would automatically have your ovaries removed. I am 49 and was given the option of having them removed, but turned it down due to the health risks involved - heart disease and osteoporosis, both of which run in my family. HRT does not prevent the increased risk. I would have my ovaries removed if I had a genetic risk of ovarian cancer or if a cancerous growth was found, but not just because it's automatically done because of my age.

no it didn't happen to me. I was having headaches before I think it was the stress and tension before the op, I havn't had 1 since

Poppy said her doctor said she took out the ovaries of anyone over 47 to prevent possible complications.,

Nanny, you said if you were younger, you would have fought to keep your ovaries. To me, that implies they automatically take them out unless you make a big fuss about it.

Every consultant up and down the country will have different views. Seemingly your ovaries don't last long without your Fallopian tubes anyway. I didn't want to risk having to go back in and get my ovaries removed with the risk of bowel or bladder problems. I have two friends who had a TAH but kept their ovaries and had to go back and get them removed due to problems. Yes I think the younger you are the best option is to try and keep them but I hope my HRT will sort out any menapausal symptoms I am having. This is a discussion everyone will have with their specialist and decide what's best for them.

I was concerned about this myself because my gyn/onc also mentioned removing my ovaries.I called the nurse, who assured me it was only an option and they cannot perform any surgical procedure without my written consent.

      Hi my name is lee.

Yes if I were younger I would have she said I wanted to keep them but my consultant only suggested removal on woman over 47. If I had insisted then she would have left them.  As I am 49 I was going to hit menopause soon anyway. This was a better risk than something going wrong and having to go through another op to remove with greater complications as they sometimes attach themselves to bowel. I was worried about hrt and finding the right one but everyone tells me it's just a trial and error exercise. Knowing everything is away gives me a bit of comfort as I know the risk of complications is now very low.

Everyone is different. My age was a big factor though in what I had done.

      Hi lee

My surgeon must have been trained at the same place as yours as that's exactly what she told me. Everything you have just said was word perfect to what I was told. If I had been younger and not already on the menopause it would ve been a different result

      Hi Nanny

yes I would imagine different surgeons believe different things but age is such a biggie here. If I had been 10 years younger we would have had a much more in depth discussion about it.  I do know though that if I had insisted then she would have been ok with it. As long as in the long run we start to feel great again. Ovaries in tact or not ha ha x

Hi, yes I was told similar thing re ovaries, that at my age 47 , things probably not working properly anyway! But had to have removed in the end due to adhesions so no choice really. I do know someone who kept hers then few years after had to go through op again to remove them due to cyst . No way I would want to do all that again!
