8 weeks post op - having pain with weight bearing

Hi all,

I am having sharp pain (level of about 6) in the front of my hip (hip crease) when bearing weight.  I will rest for a couple of days, litterally doing very little and it stops hurting.  But the if I walk about a  a mile, the pain come back.  It is odd because it is not always there.  The am not sure if I should contact my surgeon or not as I had my 6 week post op and he said things looks great.  Wondering if it muscular of the implant.  Anyone else go through this with their THR?

Currently I am only taking Tylenol or Advil, but was given a muscle relaxant that I am considering taking.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had both hips done same time but I was worried about my right side. Like you a pain but I couldn’t say mine was sharp more just very uncomfortable. Physio is sure it’s muscular. And so am I after doing more work with it. And doing physio exercises in small pool it’s getting much better. I’m 14 weeks tomorrow and they’ve said to allow another 2 and a half months for it to settle. X

I still have a little soreness in the groin area if I stand for too long, dong ironing for example. It seems to be a very common thing and I'm sure it's muscles/ligaments rather than the implant as everyone who has had this issues and gone for an x-ray has reported it's all OK. I think the final healing of deep tissue and muscle takes much longer than you may expect - several months as opposed to weeks.

    Hi,

I'm just over 9 months post op and am beginning to get pain in the groin area. I think it is muscular as one of the exercises I did after the op, i struggled with and I'm struggling again with the same exercise. Will keep persevering!

Thanks all for the replies.  Grabbed my crutch last nigh (I have been walking with no assisted device), and was able to get around.  Seems better today, but haven’t walked much yet.

Try to walk as much as is comfortable even if you do x2 short walks 10mins each gently with one crutch- use the crutch on opposite side to one giving you pain. Then build up a few mi s more each day. Can’t stress enough if you can manage to get to a swimming pool and walk forwards backwards sideways and slow marching lifting your knee up that will help.  Good luck x

I too am experiencing weight bearing pain and now feet swelling. I placed them a little higher and trying not to walk as much. I feel fantastic and would love to sleep on right side. I am praying for us all.

One thing to remember is,even if you use a stick or cane to do your walking, you are still getting the walking exercises in. I am almost 8 weeks post op here, and still have my cane with me when walking outside. I experience some pain when walking, but it's mostly muscles in the front of my leg that need to be strengthened. And I take 10 or 15 minute walks 2 to 3 times a day.

Just wondering if I am progressing as I should be for 8 weeks.  Was able to walk a mile today no crutch/cane (though carried it).  How much did everyone else increase their distance each week? Also, how long until you could turn normally while walking (twisting on op leg or crossing legs one over the other to turn)?

    Cheers

You are doing great and you know we are all different. I had my first hip done in January and now there is no pain unless I over do it. I just had rigjt hip done September 7th and it is achy but not bad as I am still using walker. The surgeon did an extension since the right leg was shorter than left. I have weight bearing restrictions but I feel so much better. But at 8 weeks you are great and it will come when your muscles are strong enough for you to turn. Wishing you greatness "Hippie"!!

Everyone recovers at a different pace, increase and see how it affects you, it is the only way you will know. The doctor I saw at six weeks said after the three months precautions to be careful for another six months. I do not cross my legs anyway as it is bad for circulation.

At 6 months I have started pilates and step aerobics but, taking care not to twist too much or overdo it. Slow but sure. I am still feeling twinges around the scar.

I am 9 weeks post of, so just ahead of you. Sound like you're doing great. I used to carry my stick around for a while as well. I never used it, it was just a comfort blanket. Everybody progresses at a different rate. I walked just over a mile at only 3 weeks but I used to be a top level gymnast and have always kept up my fitness level so my muscles were in exceptionally good shape before the op. I still move around carefully and don't cross my legs. I can now sleep on either side with no pillow between my knees but that's only been the past 3 days. I still have some deep soreness and a slight knotted feeling in my butt but I think deep, soft tissue takes much longer to fully heal. I'm very happy with how things are going. I wouldn't worry too much about distance. So much depends on age, fitness, weight etc. Just do what feels right for you and I wish you all the best for your continued good recovery.

there is a muscle called the hip flexor muscle that runs from your hip, across your groin and down the inside front of your thigh. During surgery it is stretched and moved out of the way so during your recovery it sometimes spasms or feels like an awful charlie horse. Mine did it after my hip replacement and I was sure something was wrong with the hip, but it finally stopped. I am now 13 weeks post op and it is completely gone. Rest it and ice it for 20 minutes every 4 hours helps a lot and know it will get better soon.
