9 weeks post op and pilates

Hi all fellow hippies

My daughter has asked if I will attend a Pilates class with her. She has spoken with her instructor who has advised that so long as I have been discharged all would be fine.

I have not been discharged and due to see my consultant again in June. However, this is due to the fact that, in September, I am having my other hip replaced.

Could anyone please tell me how many weeks, post op,they were discharged.

Is anyone experienced in Pilates and, if so, what would be your advice?

Many thanks

Morrie

I think I would ask your GP or surgeon what their feelings are on the matter. Never done pilates but it appears some of the lower body stretches / movements may put undue stress on the hips. Maybe just do some of the upper body routines.  Good luck w/ this and your follow on book end surgery in September.

I had both hips, anterior, 6 wks ago and just saw my doc.  He suggested pilates to strengthen core and gave me his instructor who has worked with several THR patients of his.

I am interested in anyone who has experienced the anterior procedure.

Could you tell me where you are located?

Anterior specialists seem to be few and far between in UK.

Best wishes for your ongoing recovery.

Thank you Jamie. I had posterial and I understand that there are more restrictions post op with this approach. My goodness, How on earth did you cope with a double? I asked my surgeon who flatly refused . Having gone through the recovery on my own, I now appreciate why.

      You are extremely brave💕

Hi, I had bilateral hip replacement, anterior approach and am located in Washington, DC.  The doctor I used was Joseph J. Ciotola, M.D. at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, MD.  He has been doing this procedure for over 8 yrs.  It took two months from the time of initial visit to actual operation.  I would highly reccommend him!

Hi.  You are absolutely right about recovering solo.  It would have been impossible.  For the first two weeks I could barely do anything on my own. It was a difficult decision but now six weeks out I am now thrilled to have it done!!!  Best of luck and a speedy recovery to you.

      Thank you very much Jamie.

I reside in the UK and my surgery was carried out under our NHS. I don't think there are many surgeons within the UK, unless with private health schemes, who use the anterior appoach.

I just want it done now and to carry on with  my life.

      Good luck to you!

      THank you Jamie

I don't think I could afford US prices. Then there is the after care and flying while feeling fragile.

Glad you are so pleased with your surgeon and all the best for your ongoing recovery.

Bilateral thr is a brave choice, but at least it all over in one go.

      Best wishes

      Thank you Sue.

Did you initially see him six weeks post op and then twelve ? And all restriction lifted? I take it you had the posterial approach ?

    Hi Morrie

I went back to pilates after 8 weeks and found it fine, my teacher was aware of the op and if there were things I didnt feel confident doing she gave me alternatives. I found it a bit hard getting down on the floor at first but she offered me a chair if I needed it. I didnt push myself at first just did the easy bits and rested when I needed to. The only time I felt uncomfortable was lying on the operated side to do leg exercises due to the scar but put a cushion under the scar and was fine. I am now 17 weeks post op and go 1/2 times a week it really helps with the strengthening of the muscles. I asked my surgeon at my 6 week check and he said no problem. Good luck and take it slowly to start with

    Regards Julie

Thank you very much Julia. I would like to try.

I know my limitations and need to build core muscle. I want to be as fit as possible in readiness for the second hip replacement that is scheduled this September.

Many thanks again. Have a wonderful weekend xx💃

I do go to Pilates, it is a slightly modified class for the more mature. The intructor was not keen for me to attend till 6 months post op, and still asks me to slightly different exercises to the others so there is less strain on the hip. She may of course be very cautious

      Thank you very much Maggie.

I will go along and check it out. My daughter thinks it's amazing.

I know my limitations so no limbo dancing just yet!😛
