A Big Oops!

What is wrong with me?  I try to be careful with my fake hips, but this evening, while in a great hurry, I RAN!  I ran!  I am not even a runner! Now I am hurting to the point that I am limping and feel as though I may have to use my cane again.  It seems like lately I am trying to ruin my surgeries.  First I slip on snow slush and nearly fell and caused myself pain and problems, and now I ran!

I just need to tell fellow hippies.

I know we all try to be extra mindful after surgery, but we all also do forget from time to time. I haven't broken into a run, but I have rushed. I've moved very heavy stuff; pushed full shopping carts uphill for more than a kilometre; sat down on the floor (two weeks after op). Jumped off trains. Fell.

Just climbed onto the table about an hour ago to do something and getting back up there soon to finish up.

Try to take it easy for the next couple of days, use ice packs or painkillers today, and you'll probably be fine. If you're still really sore in a few days' time, think about getting it checked by a doc...

Hey Belle, there is a TV series here in the UK called The Supervet. The amazing vet replaces all sorts of boney bits but the amazing thing is that no one tells these animals that they are not supposed to be doing things and they have to be restrained with harnesses etc when walking.

As humans we want to preserve our 'fake hips' for as long as possible but I think we also have an inbuilt sense of survival and survival is getting back to doing normal things.

As the, umm, younger end of the THR spectrum maybe we are riskier!!

Yes. I'm a bit sore after what my daughter calls my "table dancing"... I was actually finally rehanging the bloody curtains we took down weeks ago. However, I'm pretty confident I'll feel better by tomorrow.

Thank you Belle, I guess it is a good sign if I was able to "forget" my new hips.  Means they are functioning normally.  Less pain this morning.

Ooh, that's not good. I'll be like that after I have mine done I'm sure. We have to behave ourselves or suffer the consequences, ouch!

Thanks Birdie.  The only people who can understand are right here on this site.  It is so easy to do something we naturally did prior to hip problems.  Less pain this morning, so that is a good sign.

Ha!  I remember being smacked on the hand once by a nun in my Catholic school in first grade.  Thanks Lyn, knew my hippie crowd would understand.  I guess it is a good sign that my hips felt so normal that I did not think twice about taking a short jog.  Less pain this morning.

Dawn - So glad to here you are feeling better this morning. Catholic School, woooooww.

I used to go to local Catholic School for music lessons, the Nuns used to scare me to death.

Can't relax when singing, no matter how I try so although I can sing rather well and in tune, or so I am told, and I enjoy it, I cannot get past a certain point, I learn't well from those Nuns.

K D LANG thats me, I have a rather unusually low contralto, which shocks people, and delights others, told its a rare gift.

Awesome!  I like K D Lang.  Nuns are indeed scary.

Could walk fine today but sitting in the car was agonizing.  Both hips are screaming at me.

I hope that a good nights sleep will help sooth the joints. It may be that you have just stretched the soft tissue around the joint - specially if you have not run for a while.

Perhaps this is the start of a new athletic phase pf you life, in which case you should sign off as Athletic Dawn

Thanks Michael.  There is less pain this morning, thankfully, after the painful scare last night.  I have never been a runner, but circumstances were such that I had to hurry.  I like the sound of Athletic Dawn.  I have extensive bone grafting in my left revision hip and that sounds so fragile to me.

Heh, trying to commit hip suicide? There's nothing wrong with you, Dawn, it's called getting back to normal.

We all know we have to be careful, we all know we shouldn't take risks but, heaven's sake, can't we test the water every now and again?

Confidence is a massive thing and obviously your subconcious needed little more that a 'go on' in order for you to break into an illegal run!

coming down the stairs yesterday (two weeks post op) I found I was doing it the adult way and it wasn't until I thought about it that I reverted back to toddler stepping..

I would say as long as there are no lasting ill effects then rest up and carry on.

I was told 'no running' but I interpret that as don't take up marathons or regular jogs - a quick dash won't take much off the life of your hips.

Ha!  Guess so Kate!  Hip suicide!  You are right, getting back to normal is a good thing and I guess it is a good sign to feel so normal that I would break out into an activity which is not my norm.  I go see my surgeon for my one year check and will learn then if anything bad happened.  As said above, my left hip revision required extensive bone grafting and that sounds so fragile to me.  I was not even allowed to bear weight upon it for 8 weeks and now I have jogged.  Less pain this morning so that is good.

eek an eek moment ??? Oh dear Dawn ... what are you trying to do?

Hurrying days are over, darling ... I did something similar yesterday but caught myself in time - I got out of my car  and was headed to my little bungalow, about 150 meters away (No car Bungalow park), when it started to rain !!! guess???? I slipped a bit (mud) and realied what I was about to do - so, soaking wet and it was the longest 150 meters ever !!!!

have a good night darling -  little Dawn is okay - be nice to her

Thanks Renee, you give the best warm cyber hugs!  Less pain this morning, so hoping for the best.  However, I see my surgeon for my one year check in a couple of weeks and will know then if something has gone amis.  Here in the States it was primary voting time and I entered my voting location without my reading glasses.  I got up to the table for the first registration segment and asked if I could go back out to get my glasses and she said yes, but hurry.  Then she repeated, hurry!  It was a rather long distance to my car and my teen girls were waiting for me in the car and they said to each other, uh oh, Gandy is running.  It was raining too.  But I was hurrying so that I would not hold up the long line.
