A new forum problem

I was pleased to see the list of notifications wasn't so spread out. Thought it was a return to old version. But now you can't mark as read only selected messages which you'll have read when you go through the whole post. Now you can only mark ALL as read. To go through and read each one separately will take forever. I've had trouble keeping up as it is, but at least I could read a post, then mark as read all the other notifications for that post. Going through one by one will take forever. I give up.

Yes, this is the latest inconvenience but it only happened to me late this afternoon. All was ok at lunch time. What on earth is the point of all these changes. Does somebody get badges for winding up the customers?

I'm sure they are doing their best with limited resources. Sigh.

Anhaga, using only my cellphone I just read and reply. This new forum format has produced some new challenges. No more capitalization start of a sentence. No have the of the name of the person you are responding to. but who cares!!!!

The capitalization is driving me mad. I notice a lot of people just give up and carry on in caps!

I noticed that too. I thought it was me. The typing has become very odd and parts are appearing where they shouldn't. If I offend somebody I apologise in advance as I may not notice. I keep correcting it but it's driving me up the wall.

I sent an appeal to Moderator today pleading for the original format to be reinstated. No joy so far but this arrangement is tedious. If someone would give an explanation for these infuriating changes I could be more accepting but they just seem to happen arbitrarily.
The point I made in my appeal is that, formerly, we could click on the latest post in any thread and the older, as yet unread, posts would come up then could all be marked as read in one go. Now we have to go through them all individually. Why?

Yup - that has just registered with me. What a b£**%^ pain!!!!!
I have just been through the entire amkoffee thread - but I can't delete them as read. Back to my emails. I've been on holiday and have some 200 posts on both forums to catch up with. What with the HU forum email notifications not working at all (no direct link to the post) I have had to work through every single thread and read them all to find replies even to me. And now this.
Seriously thinking about retiring...

Oh no, Eileen. You can't retire. And if you can't make head nor tail of it there's no hope for me.

please don't give up Anhaga...I agree it's SO frustrating...but you're needed here!

If they bring back a more functional version of the "mark as read" page I'll be very very happy. I just feel so discouraged now. For example, a few more notifications and this reply of yours would have disappeared onto the next page and I wouldn't be able to see it until I'd opened more recent posts. (insert "rolling eyes" emoticon here)

I feel discouraged, too Anhaga. I'm going to have to at least take a holiday from here unless things improve. I may be retired and old but I do still have a life to lead and need more time to lead it these days.
Just to add to my joy I've just had to un-install and re-install Google Chrome which just refused to open. Not connected with problems here. Sorry if that's a digression but I need to, as my sister says, throw a strop somewhere.
Silver49 BettyE

I can understand the wish to throw a strop. I know of someone who when they answer their phone tells me they are at their computer and just want to throw it out the window. I half expect them to tell me they have a broken and at least I'll know the reason.

gotcha! I've had the same problem in being "lucky" enough to catch a reply before it fell into Cyberspace!! (insert whatever emoji you feel appropriate!!😵😝😱)

I would love to see the notification pane reintroduce to that rather useless space to the right of my computer screen so I don't have to toggle back and forwards between displays. It really is infuriating when there were some really good things a year or so ago that have been chucked out with the bathwater - twice now.
New, improved???? Is it heck...

I wanted to report my own post for feedback - and I can only report it as "Inappropriate". Which it isn't. That's another new backward step unless my memory has gone...

2 questions!...what's a strop and how much is a "stone's" weight (as opposed to lbs)? sorry, I'm from the USA and unfamiliar with these terms!😵
Anhaga EileenH

I get a list of options for reporting, including feedback for moderator. Just checked. But I didn't actually try to do it.

And I don't see much sign of any clean bath water. There is nothing on this new system that is preferable to the old .
Have any other forums protested? I go to the Arthritis and the Endoscopy and the Gout now and again but they don't get anywhere near the posts as on PMR/GCA and I haven't noticed any protests yet. It's because we all have a lot to say that we're having these difficulties, I suppose.

A stone is 14 pounds. I don't really understand what a strop is, but to throw a strop is to have a temper tantrum - had to look that one up. I have heard the word "stroppy" before.

A strop is when you just want to shout and yell and throw something in frustration and a stone is 14lbs. You learn something new all the time on here!

I follow some of the osteoporosis and arthritis posts and there are no complaints there. But I think PMR is unusual in its activity, because we are all dealing with an idiosyncratic disease which even our doctors don't understand, so we have a lot to talk about and a lot of experiences to share so we use the forum differently.

Thank you (Anhaga and BettyE) from California!
Learning new terminology sure helps when reading some of these posts!
Btw....I think I'll throw a trope if this "friggin" format doesn't get straightened out!!😁👎

I do anywhere else - in that case it took me to the top of the thread.

I think that is the point Betty - we are more of a community than many others. The RA forum has gone very quiet compared with what it was.

I think I first learned about "stroppy" with regard to 2 year olds

That's the age it starts and then there's some respite and the teenage years kick in for the next part!!!!

Hi Eileen,
"I would love to see the notification pane reintroduce to that rather useless space to the right of my computer screen so I don't have to toggle back and forwards between displays. "
I'll add this to the list of things I have to discuss with the design and development teams.

Hi Eileen,
The "Report" box always had the title "Report as inappropriate" unless my memory is going as well 😃
I have just noticed something about them - while replying to you I clicked a Report link with this reply box open and it jumped to the top of the page. I'll add this to the bugs list along with the fact that they disappear if you open one and then scroll the page.

Exactly - it only happened on one post and all I saw was "Report as inappropriate" and it was gone, up to the top of the page. I tried a few times with the same post with the same result. Didn't happen over the weekend though.

A new bug - if I want to use the Notifications link to see posts it only works for maybe a maximum of 3 or 4 times and then freezes. I have to reload the site from an email notification to get it to work again. Since I have a full page of notifications each morning it is rather time consuming. I'd happily use the email notifications - were they not several hours behind the site (but as I know, that is another issue).
When I go to the post from the email notification it doesn't cancel the notification on the internal page does it - it still appears as unread? Is that right?

Hi Eileen,
I have not had this issue and had > 50 this morning but I will try and recreate. I will also pass this on to the developers to check as they may be able to see reports I don't have access to.
Re emails - no, when you click the link in an email it will set the notification as read on your notifications page. I checked this morning and it was working like this for me for every email I used the link from. If it is not doing this for you let me know.
Also they shouldn't be several hours behind the site. The one reported yesterday was due to that particular post going to moderation. I've had a quick scan through emails received last night compared to when the post was made and half an hour seems to be the longest time taken to receive the email. I'll do more checking on this today to double check.

No, definitely see big differences of times between something being posted and the notification, as much as 3 or 4 hours on occasion. And resetting the "read" on the notification page has been erratic - sometimes it does I think, sometimes it doesn't. I got a couple this morning that were within half an hour so maybe it is something that has righted itself.
A big problem for me has been that I have read a post I have had a notification for - and there have been a load of replies already for which I haven't yet had an email. I can delete the emails without reading the post because there is a short nibble of the text which I recognise and know I have seen it - but can't identify the notification for it without clicking on it which takes a lot of time as it is slower loading than it used to be. Is it possible to put a nibble of the post on the notification list too, or the title of the thread? It would be more use to me than who posted and in a thread by whoever - there are a couple of dozen by lynda for example but you can't tell which one. On the other hand, being told who has replied in the thread entitled "How do I reduce" means that when I have just read every single post in that thread one after the other I can simply delete them all. I suspect this is a source of the complaint that the notifications are out of order - they aren't, you just saw a post before you were told about it.

Ok, I will check with devs to see if there is any delay in sending emails beyond the possible 15 mins I thought was in place. I don't know if there are thousands waiting to be sent this may cause delays which is all I can think of.
Regarding the notifications page, I did ask about the links including the discussion title as I agree completely. However, I was told by the devs that at the moment the way the links are generated means this is not currently possible.
I also asked for snippet text to be included which would help because of the link issue and just generally. I was told this would be possible but requires a lot of dev work/time so won't happen soon.
I have requested that both of these be investigated because of the benefit to users and will "justify" any time vs user experience considerations.
In the meantime the work to improve the pages a bit is ongoing and hopefully I can get them to release soon. Here is a preview of changes:
Reinstated individual Mark as read buttons.
Ability to select and Mark several as read at once (ignore typo - will be called Mark selected as read).
Background colour to further highlight unread posts.

If all this stuff is so time consuming for them - they shouldn't have changed what worked well in the first place! I have no sympathy!!!!!!!
I would go so far as to say that the notifications page as it is now is more trouble than it is worth...
Thanks Alan - you'll get your reward in heaven!

The preview of changes looks hopeful. Many thanks.
Pity we can't have System Restore on here as in W7. I'd lay good odds that 90% of contributors would opt to go back to how we were a month ago and the developers could have a day off.

From reading a lot of the comments it appears that it's not just the things we all have to deal with, like the difficulty of deleting read posts, but there's a whole slew of other issues with devices not computers, as though this particular program wasn't developed with a mobile device in mind.
