Acid Reflux and Inflammed Esophagus?

Hello, I started experiencing esophagus problems all of a sudden about two months ago. It started one evening right after I finished supper, I felt like I had a lump of food stuck in my esophagus, rignt between my breast. It did not hurt, just felt like a lump of food just sitting there. I drank a lot of water and walked around the yard trying to get the food (?) to go down. After about an hour, it seemed to be ok. This continued to happen to me every evening after eating, but the symptom started lasting longer. At that time it was just my evening meals, then as the weeks moved forward it started happening with all meals, just worse in the evening. I made an appointment with my Gastroenterologist, who I use to see ten years ago for acid reflux. He scheduled an endoscopy, and the results showed no stricture, and no cancer. He said my esophagus was a little red and inflamed and prescribed me rabeprazole sodium at 40 mg daily. This seemed to make the stuck food feeling go away but caused me really horrible insomnia and constipation, so I had to stop taking it. I now take Nexium at 20 mg twice a day, but it is not helping at all. I am having a hard time believing this symptom has anything to do with acid reflux, as I have not had any acid reflux symptoms, or issues in years. There are no symptoms at all, no heart burn, nothing. Does anyone else have symptoms like this? Could it be anything else? Thanks.

I'm having the same problem. My GI specialist ask me to under go ultrasound of the liver, gall bladder and pancreas, also a barium swallow test and an upper endoscopy. None of these test revealled the reason for my problem. They only confirmed that I do have acid reflux and a hiatal hernia. After taking 40mg of Nexium twice a day and Mylanta when needed, I still have the same issue.
After I drink anything (water, fruit punch, tea) and after eating even a small meal, I feel something rise up in my esophagus. It is a choking feeling, it does not burn or taste sour. It like gas or the pressure of something suck between my stomach and throat. It is hard to breathe, I belch about every 2 - 3 minutes, and there is a pain in top of my stomach, sometimes also a pain shoots through the right side of my chest.
Next, I am scheduled to have a gastic swallow test. This is suppose to see if my stomach is emptying correctly. I have the feeling that this specialist does not know what is the cause of this discomfort. I have lost 25 pounds (55kg) in 3 months because I eat very small amounts of food or not at all, trying to prevent the this horrible choking feeling. Because of this, I do not go places and socialize anymore. Everyone is asking why I am so skinny and my family is worried that I'm not well. The medical bills continue add up and some people think it is all in my head.
If any of you have some ideas, please write back!!

Hi raellen,
I recently started getting a burning sensation in my throat feeling as if I have acid that is coming up my throat. The thing is I always experience this at night. When I am asleep I get the feeling and I wake up right away to drink water. Usually that helps. Today it did not. The feeling is not going away and I'm not sure what it is. I decided to go and search on the internet and that led me to here. Right now it's the middle of the night and I can not sleep at all.
Please let me know if this is acid reflux and if it helps I ate watermelon today.
Best regards,
Mz

In my opinion, if you’ve tried everything and didn’t help I would then only relate it back to stress, iv noticed that every time I’m under big pressure or dealing with different stresses in my life I get that feeling in my chest as if something is stuck there. And iv noticed when I get busy with something or someone it actually goes away until I remember my stresses again.

I have had reflux for many years but has been under control. in the last few months I did start experiencing the problems with feeling everything I swallow. It seemed to get stuck in one place, but in the last couple of weeks I started experiencing pain. The pain was concerning and all kinds of things were going through my mind. I totally get why people experience anxiety with this situation. I prefer homeopathic methods to treat the problem. I had not heard anyone speak of any kind of medication that actually healed or eliminated the problem. Any way after not having relief from the pain for about 5 days I drank Apple Cider vinegar. I put a little fresh lemon juice with a little salt and it seemed to help. It was about 2 tbl spoons and I did it twice with a two hour interval. I slept that night. I woke up without the pain and was able to drink water and my coffee pain free. I don't know that there is a cure, but I know the vinegar won't hurt me nor cause side effects. That is what I did.

Just wanted to chime in here as I have constant feeling of food stuck in the throat and chest. It's common to assume acid reflux , but often this isn't acid reflux. I've had two of them and they are negative for acid reflux. I've had this problem for a year and ppi drugs do not help, they make it worse. There are a couple of things that can cause this other than acid reflux. First, most people that are taking ppi are prescribed these drugs in a rush by their docs. Low stomach acid can cause the same symptoms as high stomach acid. Your valve needs enough acid to trigger it to close, reducing acid makes it worse. A pH test should be done before taking ppi drugs to see if you in fact need them.
The second is allergies. Food intolerances can cause this as I had undetected celiac for a long time. If you are getting intollerant or have food allergies, this can be a cause.
Third, there are autoimmune conditions that cause this . One is eosinphil esophagitis. It's an autoimmune condition of the esophagus and can be triggered by allergies or overreacting immune system. Don't just assume it's acid reflux and start popping pills. These drugs are absolutely horrible and iftrncause more damage than good , especially if you don't have high acid to begin with. Don't assume your doctor will figure it out either, take your matter in your own hands and do some research. I've had to beg, push and demand just to get to where I am in my current standing.
