Acid reflux, lump in throat, gas pains

I have been diagnosed by the ENT for reflux and I also suffer from anxiety..as I know anxiety and stress is a big trigger for stomach issues in general. For the past 2-3 months I have been getting this lump in throat sensation and lately it seems to be worse! My anxiety has been a lot better, so it doesn't make sense to me why I would be getting this sensation..I had vanilla ice cream last night so I am assuming that triggered it, since I am still trying to figure out WHAT foods exactly make it worse. I also have been getting what I feel are gas pains (been to the cardiologist and gotten a chest X-ray, many EKGs, all good) on my left side by my rib...and even under my armpit a bit. I burp a lot, so all this seems to be related.
Does anyone deal with similar symptoms? And what do you do to help the lump in throat sensation? I have been trying aloe juice, licorice tea. And st the moment I am chewing gum to see if it helps.

Hi Sarah,
Just wondering if you ever found a solution to the lump in the throat feeling. I started getting this feeling 5 months ago every so often, and it's only gotten worse. I get it every day now, and even keep track of the intensity on a scale of 1-5. It's so frustrating . In the last month I've also started having what I think are panic attacks (I've never experienced them before but my whole upper body goes numb, I get dizzy, and my hearts starts racing and I feel like I'm having a heart attack).
I'm lost. I'm 27 years old, I've been to the doctor so many times and no one seems to know what's going on. I was on omeprazole for acid reflux but it didn't seem to do anything. I had my heart checked out (EKG, 48 hour holter, echocardiogram) and the cardiologist said things looked ok. I've been tested for lyme disease and thryroid things. All negative.
I've been taking a lot of walks to ease the tingly-ness that comes over my body, and that seems to help. I'm just so confused. If this is all anxiety, I don't know where it even stems from because I'm actually pretty happy. The only thing that's been stressing me out so much is my health.
Any advice you have would be much appreciated!! Thank you.

Let's keep this thread going! Reading about other peoples symptoms will help others substantially. The more replies, the better one will feel about their symptoms. Anxiety is no joke and will make your body feel like anything you start believing. The brain has nuclear power.. remember that. It is one of the most powerful things to exist.

I just wondered if any of you are now any better or have recieved treatment?
I was diagnosed with gerd about 3 years ago and I was given omeprazole. It seemed to give o away after a while only getting the odd acid attack. Then about 6 months ago I started getting wind stuck in my chest and back, literally having to get people to wind me. I didn’t put this together with the reflux and I didn’t go back on the meds. The just before Christmas I was having chest pains in my sternum and on the left side of my breastbone and under my armpit, radiating between my shoulder blades. I have a panic disorder and panic attacks took me straight to a n e thinking I was having a heart attack. The did notice a ectopic heartbeat so I have a cardio appointment in May for that but that doesn’t answer the chest pains. They are chronic now, I’m beside myself when I get that feeling. I’ve got a lump in my throat nearly all the time, my chest feels like it’s burning and full all the time. I feel like air is stuck between my shoulder blades too. Then I’m not sure if it’s because of the panic but I get light headed and lethargic too. I’m so sick of it! I used to be able to drink milk answers that helped but I’m
Not sure if it’s aiding it or causing it now.
I’d love to know how’s you are all doing now and if these symptoms are also common in anyone’s to stop me making that umpteenth trip to a n e.

How are you feeling now? I have a lot of the same symptoms to include lump in throat and pressure pain in the back and sometimes pressure below breastbone which initially was only problem then moved to throat. It feels like a trapped burp and causes pressure in my ears. It’s not constant but I get it daily and it seems worse in the evening. Tonight I made the mistake of drinking fizzy water and I guess this created extra gas which made the lump and pressure really bad. Is your lump in the throats also like a trapped air bubble? I can also hear my throat gurgle immediately after swallowing.

Hi Amie and anyone else on this forum .... 2 months back I had really loose gassy stools so unusual for me as i have always been So regular. This lasted 2 weeks then I thought o had went back to normal. I had noticed a couple of times after eating (which by the way I eat way too fast ) hey you need to slow down a bit that's sticking. But that was that until 3 weeks ago when me and the hubby decided to eat breads and balsamic quite late before bed. Instantly I had that feeling of indigestion and the food being trapped this lasted for 2 days but turned into gassy feeling. Trying to burp but not coming out. I then decided after looking online to drink water and ginger this made me burp but it didn't give me the relief a normal burp would. Panicked and went to doctor who had thoughts of a hitus hernia or cramping of the osophegus. She gave me 20mg omezrapole I continued to take then for next few days but felt better then I ate crab sticks and bejesus it scared the life right out of me as this episode lasted for 4 days panicking about eating and changed my diet to a soft or liquid one. I kept getting this feeling of something trying to force itself up through my throat . Back to the doctors again explained my anxiety and how it's taking over my life. She upped my omezrapole to twice a day and put me on anti depressants. Also put me down for an immediate scope (can take couple of weeks) my stress levels are through the roof was scared to take anti depressants but today I have finally reached out for them.
I do find this feeling of fullness in my throat happens more so about half an hour after eating ( I actually feel the soup eases the discomfort slightly ) then just when I start to feel slightly normal it comes back eith a bang and the anxiety is through the roof again. Believe it or not my symptoms are suppressed through the night I do not have major issues although approx every few months my husband as seen me experiencing sleep apnea where I awake in a panic struggling to breathe but to be honest I haven't had this symptom since this major episode began. I'm sorry for dragging out this post but I feel this is taking over my life I have myself with osophegus cancer I keep googling and it's not helping matters but I'm so scared. I have had routine bloods done for usual liver, kidney, cholesterol, white blood cells , egg and all cane back clear but today I just had to ask the doctor to send away a still sample as this waiting about is terrifying me ... I was just wondering how you where all getting on and any suggestions to put my over active mind at peace ... thank you for listening Angie

Hi Angella and Chandra,
Sorry I haven't replied sooner, all these notifications were going to junk.
Ok so after a lot of scans, MRI's, Tubes, prodding and diet changes they still don't know what it is. But...….I have lost 3.5 st since this and i'm now a healthy weight and only seem to get these symptoms when I eat bad, eat gluten (found out I was intolerant) and drink caffeine or alcohol. I've had to limit a lot of foods but I now feel 90% better than I did when I posted this 7 months ago.
The anxiety is still as bad but it only flairs up when I have an episode and if I have an episode it's my own fault for eating or drinking something I know doesn't agree with me.
Acid reflux and oesophageal issues will always live with me now but I at least know how to handle them.
I hope your issues have subsided and after living with above for over 3 years I feel your pain. All I can suggest is maybe a change in diet or weight if needed. It can take about 3 months for your insides to heal so keep at it, I noticed changes after 3 weeks and felt so much better by 6 weeks.
Hope this helps.
Amie x

Hi Saranne8,
Acid reflex causes so much issues with our bodies its unbelievable, tightness in the throat would be due to the acid and gas built up which causes the anxiety. I started to have issues when i was in my 20's with panic disorder and was put on antidepressants and anti anxiety medicine which did help, but those medicines covered up my issues which were anxiety. I started to do neurofeedback on myself and that took care of it. I was able to get off the medication and did fine for many years until i hit menopause and started my own business in neurofeedback. I've been taking care of a lot of clients and have not been taking care of myself and now I'am back to square one with the lump in the throat and chest feels funny like heavy...left rib pain which is caused by the acid reflex hitting the vagus nerve. So needless to say i will begin my journey of neurofeedback on myself and going on a clean diet. No sugars, no bread or processed junk or fried food, and NO fast food, best to eat home. Lots of water and veggies, defiantly fiber to keep things moving, lean meats, and aloe force to help with inflammation, probiotics to add good bacteria. Unfortunately our food source is a lot to blame with all of the GMO's that are hurting our digestive system. Magnesium is good also which will help to relax you or you can take an epson salt bath for 20 minutes to help to relax you. Also get your D3 tested and see where you are at, D3 helps with inflammation so make sure you have a doctor that deals with nutrition, your numbers should be in the 50-80. B12 will help also as well as a B complex. Sleepy time tea with added Camille tea also will help relax you. Stay away from dairy also. Don't let this get to you so bad just remember it is just anxiety and your central nervous system is haywire. Try to relax as much as possible and make sure you belly breath that does help. Prop up at night so the acid won't burn your throat. Been down this road many times so I know what works...Did enough research to help me, You will be your own doctor for sure. Take care of yourself and exercise! Hope this helps

Hi guys,
I'm really happy to see that people are still commenting here as it's helped me through my anxiety with everything this morning. About 8 years ago I had all of these symptoms. They widened my esophagus and I had zero problems... Until recently. This time it's been about 2 weeks and I feel like I'm going crazy. I've convinced myself this time that even I fall asleep that this lump in my throat will completely choke me. It obviously has not lol. Not only is it a lump on the throat though, it is the feeling of having something stuck in the left side. It's pokey feeling. I have had extreme gas, pain in the left side of my chest, and even some lower abdominal pain. I have started pepcid and prilosec but they haven't helped yet. I also take tums when I feel break through heart burn. It's all just so frustrating. I just want to feel normal again. So now I'm into the rounds of doctors. I'm really considering the Er today though. Maybe just in the hopes that they can help with my fears. I keep telling myself that maybe I'm one of those people that need emergency medical attention, even though I'm sure I don't. But thank you all so much for sharing!

Hi Jesly, I’ve had similar symptoms of the lower abdominal pain recently terrible wind but not much belching . I had the pain behind breast bone and in back between shoulders a couple of weeks ago but the ppi the Dr gave me helped with that. Yesterday I forgot to take my ppi in the morning & I never ate much, during the night I was very sick & almost was as if food hadn’t digested although I had eaten hours before.. I still have the bad wind. Someone in a health shop advised me that quite a lot of the time people have two little acid rather than too much & therefore stomach struggles to digest food & we get the same symptoms as too much including gas & not belching.. I’m wondering if that is what I have.. has anyone else experienced this?

I am still struggling with it although not as bad as it was. I had acid reflux with it and doc gave me some pills for that 4 weeks ago which has helped. I went for a camera up the nose and consultant said all clear, however, he said he felt my thyroid needed checking and has sent me for an ultrasound next Monday. However, I asked him what symptoms there were with a troublesome thyroid and he said 'none' so I guess the lump in throat isn't anything to do with that! Not a very communicative or helpful consultant to be honest, but sometimes they are very business like and no bedside manner!
I do find if I'm busy I forget about the lump and don't even know it's there.
Hope you feel better soon, but my advice is to keep busy and remember not to get anxious.

I spent 10 hours in the ER and they did ekg, ct scan with dye, chest X-rays etc and said not cardiac. I have a EGD scheduled in a week and a cardiologist appt set up after that . Every Dr keeps telling me ‘pain’ is not a symptom, which frustrates me because it is for me. I also suffer from that lump in throat feeling and haven’t found anything to help that. I also noticed - it is worse when I am driving. I am relieved to know others also experience pain. This is really controlling my life - I hope they can find a solution.

I have been blaming palpitations on anxiety because every other test is fine...but I THINK it could be acid reflux. Anyone else here have a feeling of pressure building up and then a sensation that's almost like a heart beat in your throat concerning acid reflux? This happens when I lay down mostly but can also happen when I'm sitting up as well. Sorry if a similar question or answer has already been posted.
