Something new seems to develop every day and knowing what to eat or avoid is a nightmare.Anyway in this message I would like to ask whether any one else like me gets a strange smell up their nostrils.I have for some time now and until today i was just assuming that this smell was being caused by the tablets i am taking Lanzesprosole and Ranitidine by I am now wondering whether its these causing it or something else. Whatever it is it isnt pleasant and cannot be masked by using cologne or after shave.Anyone having the same experience !

    Hello Ted

Do you still have this issues horrible smell coming out from you nose

  • Edited

Hi. I have the same exactly issue that jodo is complaining about. I have this sulphur smells coming out from me when I exhale and the only thing that cand control it is taking ppis most of the time. It gets away instantly and I can have a normal life but I do still want to discover the cause of the smell. It is the stomach for sure. I have been told after I had a stomach barium x rat that my stomach is abnormally long like it goes down in my pelvis..lower than the iliac bone. I think that thia might be the cause of the smell because the food stays too long in my stomach and rottens and the bacteria overproliferates...the smell also disappears when I take antibiotics like amoxicilin but only for the short period when I take them. It is really frustrating because it is affecting severely my life and the docs I have seen don't have any clue and they treat me superficially. Thanks!

Interesting...yes, I am having this disorder, if that is what it is.  I have had acid reflux my entire life but never noticed a smell or taste until recently.  I don't know if my sensitivity changed, or something in my reflux chemistry but now I do notice.  I thought I might have a bacterial sinus infection and the doctor prescribed an antibiotic.  But once my sinus drainage cleared, I still had the smell and taste.  I notice it is much stronger at night when my reflux has a better chance to work up into my mouth and nose.  It goes away during the day.  It also increases after I have had a meal, which is why I believe it is now bile or reflux I smell.  It is somewhat sweet and acrid, though not like any other smell.  I am glad I am not the only one with this condition.

I have experienced this exactly. I became so upse t after being dismissed by my GP, I organised a private consultation with ENT, leading to a tonsillectomy. The ENT told me that my problems originated from Acid Reflux. I sought out a GP who referred me for a n endoscopy, however, this was batted away from the NHS as I was to have a breath test at the doctors instead for h pylori. This came back negative, in the meantime my stomach became swollen. The GP referred me again (all this taking months) and I finally had the camera down. They found 4 gastric ulcers with recent bleeding. I'm five weeks later still waiting for the biopsy results and now taking ppi and zantac. I was taking zantac for the months leading up to the ulcers being found, but I did find that helped somewhat with controlling the smell. I can imagine my stomach was in a terrible state before! I had imagined that the problem was at the top of my stomach but not the case! Psychologically this has been hellish, financially I have thrown money at anything that would help the breath situation, all to no avail as I needed a proper diagnosis. Get your stomach checked people! At least I'm getting somewhere now. Good luck all.

    Hi all,

Thanks for sharing, I visited as many sites about this problem, I hope we can help each other. I was so embarrassed at work, I was constantly trying to disguise the smell, spending money on mouthwashes, supplements etc. I was distraught. I went to my dr, had no help so instead arranged for a private consultation with an ent consultant. He agreed I had tonsil stones, so I went ahead and had my tonsils out. Crucially, he said my real problem came from acid reflux, which he could determine from putting a scope up my nose and down my throat.

It took 8 months to get a nhs hospital referral for a gastroscopy. I had to do a breath test for h pylori, came back clear. My abdomen got really swollen and hard, lots of belching. I had so many problems before this went ahead. They found 4 gastric ulcers, one large with a blood clot, and blood in the stomach! From biopsy, no h pylori found (or cancer!), only inflammation.

I had already been taking ranitidine, so the physician was shocked. I don't smoke, don't drink much or regularly, but my mum had a burst ulcer in her 40s, and so did her uncles. I then went on Lansoperazole , twice a day, and asked to remain on Ranitidine. I reduced to just the Lansoperazole and then took the dose down to once a day, adding another if necessary. I have no problems now, but I am down several thousand pounds between tonsillectomy and remedies etc!

Good luck to everyone, it is a horrible experience, but get the right help and you can get through it. I also have developed skin rashes and lung blebs over the last 10 years, may all be autoimmune related?

    Stay strong!

    Mart

      thx for sharing so ..

it was from acid reflux ?.. and it went away from the lansoperazole ?

Acid reflux, ulcers caused smell ( and other stomach problems). Yes, I took Ranitidine, did not help. Lansoperazole did, and worked for my Mum. If the brand is changed, we both noticed it does not work so well, so have to keep an eye on what chemist gives you. We are NHS, you tend to get the cheapest they can get! There are other types of PPI, so worth trying different ones. Once ulcers present, worth keeping on same treatment for couple of months to allow to heal, to check is working. I'm still getting sour taste, was a smell last week, so must be still healing. I'm eating little and often too. Had some small amount of wine, with meals. I don't think it does me any favours. I might go tee total. No spirits at all, no spicy food for me. Met up with my cousin who has lupus, she thinks it is that. She had it since 18 years, is now 46. She battled non hodgkins lymphoma last year, does not know if related but suspects so. My dear Mum passed away after a battle with cancer of unknown primary. She had these stomach problems since her 40s, Get everything health related checked out by medics and treated folks. I know it can be expensive, but it can cost you a lot more not to. I'm a healthy living person, so was my mum and my cousin is too. If the underlying health problem is inherited (despite drs saying otherwise) you cannot protect yourself with healthy living on its own. we know our problems go back at least 3 generations, which drs do take account of, but cannot explain. Pity we didn't inherit money, lol! Good luck on medication, although not a cure, it prevents the damage caused by acid, which can cause cancer.

A week ago I had an extreme abdominal pain accompanied with chest pain and dizziness. I thought I'm having a heart attack so I asked my parents to bring me to the A&E. All tests came negative and the doctor diagnosed me with GERD. I was prescribed with Lansoprazole to take for 2 weeks. I'm still having occasional stomach pain now especially early in the morning when I wake up. But the good thing is I never had a chest discomfort anymore. However, 2 days ago I noticed this strange odor I'm smelling and I know it's from my stomach. I can't describe the smell but it's really unpleasant that I can still smell even if my mouth is close. The smell is stronger when I exhale. I'm worried that others might smell it too when I talk to them. I just want to know if you guys was able to get rid of it? If yes, I hope you can share some advises to me. Thank you!

      Hi Sheela,

The Lansoperazole helped me, still taking over a year later. I think the smell is ulcers. It does flare up on occasion, so I'm identifying triggers and avoiding foods like spicy, pasta etc. It took two months to heal. Twist, having a biopsy on skin rash, may be related to autoimmune.

      Good luck!

Thank you Mart for your response. I thought the smell might be caused by Lansoprazole. So you didn't take anything other than Lansoprazole that entire 2 months when you got healed? I hope mine will be treated by it too. And I guess I really need to seriously modify my diet too. I hope your biopsy will come negative. Get better soon!

Hi Sheela, I also continued with Ranitidine, as a precaution as although I was on that and still got the ulcers, I do think it helped with some symptoms. It was considered unusual to be on both, so I argued my case! I did have bowel problems and dizziness during this time around too.

This was an awful time in my life, so be assured I know what you are going through and I only hope I can be of some help. I was desperate. Ulcers are potentially serious, and may be symptomatic of an underlying condition. I had lung, tonsil, rash and joint problems at various times during the last few years. It takes a lot of perseverance to get the correct investigations and answers. I do think your medication will help, but there are other types so if it doesn't work, go back to your healthcare professional. Best wishes, Martina X

Thank you for sharing some advises despite being in a more difficult state than I am. I will follow your suggestion to visit a specialist when I don't get better after another week or two. I'll be praying for us to be finally free from these illnesses and have our normal life back soon. All the best always!

Thank you Sheela24, I'm having a skin biopsy in December to hopefully identify an autoimmune problem. If you want to update, or vent, feel free. It is so strange when your body does odd things! Very disillusioning to find docs don't have the answers. Lansoperazole for 8 weeks should do it, then maintenance dose going forward. Good luck, thanks for the prayers, same back!

I have the same horrible symptom, an acidic and acrid stench coming from deep inside, and so far the PPI has not helped it has been more than a month. I think it correlates with my throat discomfort, congestion and breathing difficulties. this condition is called LPR, or silent reflux. I'm hopeless because a big percentage of people do not find relief from LPR since it is possible that acid AND non acidic reflux cause this symptom. for the bile reflux, I am trying the European/Canadian Gaviscon Advance with alginates. Licorice and Ginger help too, and melatonin, magnesium and low carb diet. I am also reading about SIBO, hard to get tested for it here and expensive. I tried an anti bacterial treatment and probiotics for a month, saw 0 difference. Maybe I'll keep the probiotics, also look into 5HTP or Tryptophan for digestive and stress regulation. keep updating on any of your progress guys

I read up a lot, there is rather a lot of conflicting advice. I used gaviscon, it kind of helps immediate symptoms, but not a solution. I think smell is ulcer related, horrible to think of but you know when people have leg ulcers, and they smell? Just a thought.

I have an endoscopy booked for later in January but a barium swallow x ray did not show anything. would ulcers show on an x ray? maybe not if they're small. I hope the camera helps clear this up. it's not liveable this way.

I haven't heard of barium for diagnosing ulcers, but maybe for looking for hernias? Good luck with the endoscopy. I know the feeling, you don't want to have something diagnosed as wrong, but there is something and you want to get to the bottom of it.
