Addiction run in the family?

Out of curiosity those that suffer with alcohol problems did your mum or dad suffer the same? As I always thought it was passed on by a defective gene ?

Yes, my Dad certainly liked his drink and he died aged 64 with liver problems.  He wasn't a terribly heavy drinker....but, like me, he drank most evenings.

I will be interested to see what the outcome of this thread is.

Yes I do think it runs in family's,not sure about a defective gene though.

My mother was brought up by Irish nuns after the whole orphanage was shipped over to Australia.

She became an alcoholic as I am myself

Not for me, my dad died this year, aged 83 of bowel cancer. My drink problem is of my own volition.

I was adopted at six weeks, and my adoptive parents weren't drinkers. From age 14 I found that I enjoyed a glass of sherry or wine at special occasions, I liked the glow it gave me. From then on I would always like a drink if offered one and could drink more than my friends. At 17 I would have a drink at home if I was on my own, and would never turn down the offer of a drink. It became noticeable when I got married at 21 and would often buy a bottle and drink secretively. After I had my own children I wanted to find out about my natural parents and traced them. My biological father was an alcoholic, as were both his parents. My biological mother and her two sisters were also alcoholics, as are two of my half sisters. I'm convinced that it is hereditary to a certain degree

Cazjaz I've asked many times about is alcoholism heriditary, and non of the so called 'experts' have actually confirmed this. There have been suggestions that we learn from our parents, we follow familiar patterns of behaviour. A child growing up where both parents drink excessively can think that is normal behaviour and so they in turn do the same and follow suit. However, in my case, it does me think there is evidence which confirms this theory, that it can be heriditary. I'd be interested if anyone knows or has evidence to support this.
