Addiction run in the family?

Out of curiosity those that suffer with alcohol problems did your mum or dad suffer the same? As I always thought it was passed on by a defective gene ?

    I have a really addictive personality and notice it in different forms in all my immediate family. My mum drinks daily and my dad went for a few each night too. My brother is now teetotal because he can't stop drinking once he starts. Definitely think there is some link whether it be genetic or learned behaviour? My parents think my drinking is moderate which aways meant I drank freely without guilt. However I notice now my friends have a completely different view and it makes me worried I drink far more than is healthy.
