Advice please, worried about elderly mum with swollen legs and ankles due to amlipodine.

My mum is 85 and always been in good health apart from high blood pressure, which she has taken medication for years, the most recent of which is amplipodine. She saw the nurse for regular check up and she spotted mum's ankles and legs are swollen so took her off the amlipodine straight away (about 1 week ago). My concern is she now seems not her usual self, she can't walk much as she in pain due to the swelling, she also has severe back pain which seems to have come on more or less the same time as her swollen legs/ankles.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if the swelling/pain is temporary and that she will recover ok now she isn't on the amlipodine?

Thanks in advance

I pretty sure she hasn't had any diuretics, I do know she was prescribed some calcium tablets but she couldn't swallow them and wouldn't take them. Dad's taking her back to see the doc next week if there is still no sign of improvement.

She seems very lethargic and has no appetite, she's only 4'11" and about 7.5 stone. From what I've read she probably is experiencing withdrawal symptoms and I'm hoping she'll start picking up soon. I'm trying to be positive.

There are calcium tablets that are chewable so might be better for your Mum if she has difficulty swallowing.  They are called Calcichew and have added Vitamin D.  Talking of Vit D, many of us have been found to be deficient, and the Vit D in the Calcichew won't be sufficient to increase Vit D levels to normal.  That needs a high dose pure Vit D3 tablet (Colecalciferol), and once into normal levels, the Calcichew will be fine as a daily maintenance dose.  If she hasn't had a Vit D blood test, then do ask for one - older people in particular are more likely to be Vit D deficient, and such deficiency can lead to many nasty conditions if left untreated.  If a booster is needed, it will help the body to absorb more calcium from food, thereby helping to ward of thinning of the bones (Osteoporosis).  As you say your Mum has no appetite, then she is probably unlikely to be eating sufficient food, in which case someone should have suggested giving her some fortifying supplements - there are special drinks available.

Hi I was just reading the amlipodine leaflet again, as my husbands ankles have swollen up today, and notice that back pain is listed as result of a swollen pancreas, so best get it checked, hope your mum is ok soon.

Hi all, mum was taken into a&e this morning after severe vomiting, after blood tests, xrays and ct scan we now know that her bowel cancer has returned and has caused an obstruction in the bowel but also the cancer is now in her kidneys too.

Won't know until tomorrow what exactly the docs can do, main thing is she is comfortable and not in any pain.

Thank you for all your support.

Oh, Jinnie, I'm so sorry to hear what's happened to your Mum.  There's no easy way for you to cope with this but it must at least be a little comforting for you, your Dad and the rest of your family to know that she isn't in any pain.  I do hope there is some positive news tomorrow.

Mum passed away on Thursday night. She went peacefully and pain free, which is a blessing. I stayed with her for four days in hospital, but my brother was with her when she went, so she wasn't alone. She was a remarkable woman ho lived a rich life and I will miss her every moment for the rest of my life. I will honour her memory by sharing the unconditional love she gave me with children and the ones around me. Rest In Peace beautifyl lady.

      Hi Jinnie,

I am so sorry for the loss of your mum Jinnie. You may not have your dear mum with you but no-one can take away your cherished memories. I believe your mum is in a better place but she will always live on through you and your children. As time goes on you will be able to dwell in those moments you shared, without the acute pain you feel now. God bless.
