Advice please, worried about elderly mum with swollen legs and ankles due to amlipodine.

My mum is 85 and always been in good health apart from high blood pressure, which she has taken medication for years, the most recent of which is amplipodine. She saw the nurse for regular check up and she spotted mum's ankles and legs are swollen so took her off the amlipodine straight away (about 1 week ago). My concern is she now seems not her usual self, she can't walk much as she in pain due to the swelling, she also has severe back pain which seems to have come on more or less the same time as her swollen legs/ankles.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows if the swelling/pain is temporary and that she will recover ok now she isn't on the amlipodine?
Thanks in advance

She seems very lethargic and has no appetite, she's only 4'11" and about 7.5 stone. From what I've read she probably is experiencing withdrawal symptoms and I'm hoping she'll start picking up soon. I'm trying to be positive.

There are calcium tablets that are chewable so might be better for your Mum if she has difficulty swallowing. They are called Calcichew and have added Vitamin D. Talking of Vit D, many of us have been found to be deficient, and the Vit D in the Calcichew won't be sufficient to increase Vit D levels to normal. That needs a high dose pure Vit D3 tablet (Colecalciferol), and once into normal levels, the Calcichew will be fine as a daily maintenance dose. If she hasn't had a Vit D blood test, then do ask for one - older people in particular are more likely to be Vit D deficient, and such deficiency can lead to many nasty conditions if left untreated. If a booster is needed, it will help the body to absorb more calcium from food, thereby helping to ward of thinning of the bones (Osteoporosis). As you say your Mum has no appetite, then she is probably unlikely to be eating sufficient food, in which case someone should have suggested giving her some fortifying supplements - there are special drinks available.

Won't know until tomorrow what exactly the docs can do, main thing is she is comfortable and not in any pain.
Thank you for all your support.

I am so sorry for the loss of your mum Jinnie. You may not have your dear mum with you but no-one can take away your cherished memories. I believe your mum is in a better place but she will always live on through you and your children. As time goes on you will be able to dwell in those moments you shared, without the acute pain you feel now. God bless.
