Advise re prostrate cancer treatment for my dad...

Posted , 16 users are following.

My dad who is a hale and hearty 79yr old who walks 2 to 3 miles most days has just been diagnosed with prostrate cancer, he has a PSA of 7, A gleason 7 (which is a 3+4), he has no symptoms. He is seeing a doctor on 1/6/15 to decide on treatment, surgery or hormone therapy with radio therapy. likely to opt for the hormone therapy with radiotherapy. Both read quite worryingly re side effects. Anyone out their with info/advice re hormone therapy and radio therapy. Is radiotherapy alone better as Hormone therapy described as chemical castration, sounds scary re side effects. My dad is fit with good quality of life. Any advice from those that have been there...Worried for my dad.

    Hi there.

Just had my 1st hormone injection 5 days ago. Apart from being a bit sore in the tummy area, so far, NO side effects!

I to am a new diagnosis, reasonably fit 63 year old pro photographer, 9 on the Gleason thingy.

Was very worried about side effects but as yet all is good.

Having big meeting with consultants in 10 days or so to decide about radio therapy

Cancer is a bummer but you have to stay possative. I find work & hobbies are helping. (Shot a christening + party yesterday.

Seemingly the playwrite Dennis Potter decided to give his cancer a name- he called it Rupert!

    I'm calling mine Conrad!

Wishing you & your dad all the best.

      Hey there Foxy !

So pleased to hear you are underway with slowing Conrad down.  Next step will be the R/T to try and knock him off for a good long while,  if you decide to go that route.

In your posi,  I think I would.  It ain't so bad.  Well,  not next to letting him have his own way ...  ( untreated ... PC is ugly ).

Anyway,  just to let you know,  you're my main man ! ...  ' 9 on the Gleason thingy ' and '  Conrad '.   Way to go  Foxy !   I just love it.   Keep 'em coming.

      With Best Regards

      Dudley

      P. S.  For my friend Carl ... I am now trying to scrape together the money for a 2013 BMW  S 1000 RR with 4136 klms on the clock and an Austin GP3 bellypan exhaust.  Matt grey.  Never seen or heard anything like it.

      INCROYABLE !

Glad you enjoyed my post Dudley. If I can, I refuse to let this get me down.

Supposed to seeing nursey from Conrad care tomorrow who wants to get all touchy feely & offe me hypnotherapy & reflexology.

Well its years since I did an 'ology' & my friend who runs a small hotel in the lakes

(which is only 30 miles away) has suggest we meet up for a bite & a jar.

      Guess its the lakes then!

CT scan on Wednesday then approx 10 days to the consultants meeting.

Might even get this Sodding cathater out by then!

(They send you to a 'TWOC' clinic) Trial without cathater, or as a friend in the legal profession said " Taking without the owners consent".....same thing really!

Oh re BMW. I drive an old but good 2 door coupe. Hoping to get it respray sometime soon.

      Will post more soon

Hope everything is good with you.

      Night. night, Foxy

Hey Dudley,  Well......it isn't a motorcycle, but for the aging, increasingly sedate gentleman that I know is in there......sounds like a very comfortable ride.  And for us aging types with a lot of miles on our clocks, the car is a great counterpoint with only 4136 klicks on its clock.  Carl

      Hello Carl,

It is good to hear from you.  Well,   surprisingly,  with all the alphabet/numerical references,  the 2013 BMW S1000RR ... actually IS a motorcycle !

( Our new Buddy Foxy has the BMW car,  a two door coupe ).

I hope all is going well for you at the moment and Oregon at least,  not in drought.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all correspondents but particularly at this time,   with :  Kombi,  Miki and her Dad,  Norma and her Hubby,  David 41094,   Foxy,  GeorgeGG,  Alfie and her Husband,   and all others who,   either personally or vicariously,   are stoically coping with this  ' bummer ' of a disease,  as Foxy put it.

      Yours increasingly aging-ly and sedately,

      And With Kind Regards,

      Dudley

Love the idea of naming cancer it gives it a less threatening feel. I'll have to think about that one!!!

My dad is tired on hormone therapy. But other than that he feels ok. He's brave and positive . Still waiting MRI result. ....

This forum is one place where discussing my dads cancer is not depressing. The attitudes if all of you are so positive. Wish I knew you all...stay well good tidings to all ...

      Thanks for your good wishes.

Glad the forum helps. It certainly gave me some much needed encouragement (& I'm only a fortnight into my diagnosis)

In fact going for a CT scan tomorrow.

      Good luck to your dad.

      Hi Carl,

Here's the thing ... I would like to send you a Private Message if you would be kind enough to receive it,  but embarrassingly have to admit publicly that up until now I don't understand how to do it.  I just can't work out the methodology.

One way it might be done is if you would send a brief one to me,  addressed to bone - head,  as this would undoubtedly open the magic portal.

The World breathed a sigh of relief when I never tried to become a train driver,  brain surgeon,  or pilot.

      Regards

      Dudley

Dear Bone - Head  This is a set-up, isn't it Dudley to make me appear to be an insensitive, obnoxious type and wrest the high road from me.  Carl

      Aaaah ...  that's great !  I laughed really hard.

No, no, no ... I assure you   it's genuine !  Truly.   Seeing what you've said though,  I can see where you thought I may be coming from.   You old cynic you.

      Anyway,  it's no biggy.

On random occasions I both struggle with the bleedin' obvious and perceive flashes of a divine eternity.

I tried for about 30 minutes and, it would appear that I can't figure it out either.  We both belong to the Bone - Head Club........middle road, that's us.

      Thanks for trying Carl,

Anyway,  having the ability to turn a flat-pack wardrobe from IKEA into a windmill is a skill,  few others can claim.

      Best Regards

      P. S.

And if you are going to make it that hard for me to borrow money,  I shan't bother.

      Ah, money.  Sure, no problem......

I managed to figure out how to send private messages.  There are two that you can access on the forums tab (top of the page) under the orange colored "you have new notifications (with a blinking orange ball)"  Give it a whirl.

Hi wfmd,My hubby is travelling Dow your dads road, just a few weeks ahead of your dad.  When he began the hormone treatment just like your dad he was very tired,he's now finished with the tablets, and he's had one injection.

Where he was napping 3-4times a day,he's not napping at all now,and he's back to his walking, not quite so far yet but he's getting there.

We feel really positive that he took the right road, his life at the moment is almost back to normal, apart from a few hot sweats, and tired towards tea time.  I think the radiotherapy may set him back a bit,but from what I've been told by others it's alright.

I do hope your dad keeps positive, and takes some hope from this forum.

Sorry FoxT this post was for worriedformydad, but if you get some

Comfort from it as well all the better. Both take care  Norma
