After 6 weeks post surgery, my prolapse is back

Posted , 9 users are following.

I had a Cystocele repair 6 weeks ago, and have been following the restrictions 100%.  I saw my surgeon yesterday, and she said the prolapse was back...but only half as big as before surgery.  She didn't want to discuss if it would get worse, or what she could do to fix it..if anything.  She just said "baby  yourself and don't lift over 5 pounds" and I'll see you again  3 weeks.  I am so upset!  Also my kidneys were enlarged because the urine was backing up, due to the prolapse.  Now I'm afraid that will happen again.. And I was told if it remained swollen, called hydronephrosis, it would eventually lead to kidney failure.  Have any of you had the prolapse return so soon after surgery!  Or has any of you had it return at any time?  What was done to fix it.?  I am losing my mind with worry.  Please someone respond.

    Hi there,

I had an anterior repair last feb and by the August the prolapse was back. I am 43 but do not want to put myself thru anymore surgery when there is no guarantee that it will be successful. I am careful when I am lifting and what exercise I do. I also use my neurotrac machine every night which helps maintain things the way they are. It is definitely better than going down the surgery route again.

      Hi,

It is a machine for doing your pelvic floor exercises correctly. I had a TVT procedure done too to cure incontinence at the same time using the sling and mesh. This has been 100% successful it is just unfortunate the bladder has dropped down again but it is common for this to happen. So at least the whole operation wasn't unsuccessful. Look up the pelvitone machine on google or Amazon it is about £65 but worth getting going forward although you cannot use it until your surgeon says it is safe to do sdebi

I would think that 6 weeks is too early to make too many conclusions hence why your doctor wants to review you in a few weeks first. Some ladies take more than 6 months to feel more like normal!

Your body has been through a lot and will be feeling weak in all areas due to the op. Please stay positive and allow it to get stronger and please dont worry too much.

I think we do expect these ops to solve all our problems but unfortunately it doesn't always. Although it sounds like yours may have at least improved some things slightly and hopefully other issues may get better as it heals and strengthens x

Thanks Merlion, the doctor did say It was down to a stage 2.  It was a stage 4 before the surgery. I pray it doesn't fall any farther.  But once it lets loose?  I am so scared because my kidneys could swell again.  Thank you so much for your words of encouragement, and I'll try to stay more positive.

    Hi Dorothy,

i do feel for you and do hope ther is an easy solution or things  improve. It is our worst nightmare.  I am 6 weeks too, see the consultant next week and I'm going to ask how likely is it that it stays successful if it is and  it feels good.  I think it is dreadful that you didn't get immediate help or reassurance or at least an explanation after  going through all that.

I would like to ask  you how does it actually feel now compared to before? I  don't think it is too awful living with a prolapse if you feel okay, I had mine for 10 years and it was very manageable until more recently when it was awful ,nothing  much stayed inside if you see what I mean, the pessaries couldn't stay up   so just not livable  and really there is no comparison now.  But I've no idea what's really going on inside of course or whether it will stay. That is the main worry. My friend had a repair done last year and it lasted three months ..all not good enough. On the other hand I have a friend who is 76 who had it done in her 40s and is still dancing around ! It seems so hit and miss or individual. I wish you all the best.

Alybee, I hope that your's holds. On Jan 2nd, I noticed a pinging feeling inside the vagina for a few days, then I took a mirror and saw the same thing as before surgery only higher. I had the problem for 20 years, and it progressed to always being out, except in the morning after being in bed for the night. I now have trouble emptying.  I'm retaining from 130 to 180 cc's.  I followed all the rules, but it still happened.  I wonder if anyone else had it so soon after surgery and what eventually was done about it.  It's too soon for more surgery, I Would think, because I'm not healed.  My husband does everything for me when he gets home from work.  And since this happened I Stay in bed most of the time..I'm so scared it will  continue to drop and I'll be back where I Started before surgery. I tried passaries but they never would stay in.  This is a nightmare.  I didn't ask the right questions before surgery...like how many of these operations have you done in the past?  Thank you for your support, and if you pray...please do for me.  I'm afraid the .hydronephrosis , swollen kidneys will come back, which could mean dialysis.  Bless you for your concern.  Dorothy

I had no alernative because living with such a severe prolapse caused the urine to back up in the kidneys. The kidneys couldn't drain and I would eventually go into kidney failure...but now that the badder is again falling, I'm scared to death that this will happen.  The doctors told me for years that the prolapse would be only an inconvenience, and would not affect my health...not true.!  I looked it up on the web, and found out that rarely it could develope into hydronephrosis.  Why didn't the doctors tell me about this slim possibility??  I would have had the surgery years ago to prevent it.  I'm very depressed and don't know where to go or what to do next.  I did get a second opinion before surgery, but that doctor's personality turned me back to the one that finally did the surgery. I sincerely thank you, and everyone who has responded.. Please pray for me.

    Hi

Yes it is a real nightmare . Thank you for sharing all that. I think it's amazing that you didn't know exactly what she was going to do and it wasn't all explained.  Are you in the UK or the US?

I had it all explained so much ,in London..and had to repeat it several times to different members of the team! so I thought maybe that was the practice now .  I wonder if you could research different surgeons in your area or fairly nearby and be referred elsewhere If it comes to it?

But you must least find out what she did exactly , why and also your options now. I will report next week when I see the specialist . This is all a minefield and a lot of people just don't understand.

Hi Albee,  I live in the US,   Nothing was explained except that the doctor would lift the bladder that had fallen into the vagina.  It caused complications with my kidneys ,where the urine backed up...called hydronephrosis.  I went to the Cleveland Clinic, but couldn't have it done there do to the travel distance, and the doctor wasn't very nice.  I went to a local  woman doc who specializes in women's urology.  She was very nice...but young...35 yrs old.  now I'm thinking that she didn't have much experience doing this .  Now,within 6 weeks, the bladder is  out again, and the doctor confirmed it.  She said to take it easy, and come back in 3 weeks.  There was no written instructions on what to do or not do....but after questioning her, she said not to lift over 5 pounds for 3 months.     I 'asked of I could bend, and she said no, so I bought a grabber to pick things from off the floor.  I asked if I could push a grocery cart, and she said...no pulling or pushing.   You, see. I had to ask,but was never given instructions unless I asked specific questions.  I followed the rules 100% and the bladder still fell again.  I'm scared!  I feel like I'm the only one that this has happened to so soon after the surgery.  She wouldn't say if she could fix it....just to see how it is three weeks from now, and to baby'smyself.  That's all I've bee doing since the surgery.  It's a nightmare and I'm so upset.
