age related diagnosis for PE and DVTs

hi

new to this site

My son nealry died in june and naturally i was a tad upset so i have complained

sadly the repsones are 'we didnt consider him to be a priority for a dvt/ pe as his age is inconsistant with Data' ( he was 32)

the various health professionals had not followed the NICE guidlines as reading your various posting it would appear many of you have suffered the same

However, i would be very grateful to be able to get an average of the ages   and for this i would be so grateful for replies and ages /gender

looking forward to hearing from you

He has recovered significantly since June but requires a life time of therapy  and compression stockings

many thanks

I was 27 when PE was Diagnosed.

12month later I feel there is no improvement!

Last few days I have been getting a ache in my chest. On my left side.

It gets brought on by exercise, feels better with rest and comes on again as soon as I move. Also been getting sharp pains when breathing that feels worse when trying to take a deep breath!

Recently had a Contrast CT Scan so waiting if the 'Experts' in my local Trust find anything..........

      MessedAbout,

I'd be careful with the exercise you are doing. I prefer not to do weights or impact movements. And I don't like working a sweat.

I think exercise can dislodge clots and or arterial plaque!!!

      hi

that what happened to my son when he got one of his in his chest wall, fed up with being told his lifestyle (mostly sedentary) was the cause of all his unwell feelings, he joined a boxercise gym and they didn’t do a health check first, consequently after some serious cardiac training he had intense pain, went to AE and was diagnosed with nothing! Muscle tear or trauma given morphine and sent home.

Def. wouldn’t recommend serious exercise I agree with you, do you also get bad heat control? My son is always looking menopausal with hot flushes and terrible sweating after changing room temperatures.

(she took the paper and consulted other doctors telling him that the datas belongs to a friend) .. i feel frustrated .. i avoid to talk with her about it lest getting things worst .. i try to keep calm and keep the smile .. but she's losing faith more and more ..its killing me ..

ok everyone let’s find a way to get this out there  so its stops being an unspoken illness blamed on lifestyle or age etc.

that all Gp’s and junior docs, AHP's etc,. recognise the signs and take futuristic preventative measures

dam sure if this was testicular (no-offence guys) or/is breast cancer @ this rate we'd have the media on our doorsteps

Its true no one understands as far as my sons work is concerned well he's on the mend, W*F he's only just started, what he had originally was a mountain now he’s got Everest to climb not only in diminishing health and strength but in the negativity he gets about his conditions.

The pain, the breathlessness. the cardiac problems, the vascular and its future problems with oedema /ulcers.

lets take the bold steps to communicate and join forces

My aplogies I hadn't realized there were private messaging.

I'm on the mobile mostly and it doesn't show the whole site

I'm hoping the last posting isn't too moderated as I keep trying to answer the questions on pe that there is an algorithm out there that is not being used and many people are becoming ill .

I've not just cut and pasted but used it format.

      many thanks

Hi, As mentioned previously my son developed dvt 2 weeks after returning home from hospital after abdominal surgery 2 weeks before that. He was 27 and luckily his symptoms were extreme so easily identified in A&E. We have now been to Guys hosp and they have said that  he is still healing and developing collaterals, minor veins that become larger and help the blood flow back from his ankle towards his heart. He has been exercising more than ever & they said he is fine to do do this  & even tho he gets pain it isnt harmful but beneficial. They say 2 years is about the time the body takes to heal. It has been 1 year since the dvt and he is having further gastro surgery next month with anti coagulation to ensure he doesnt get another dvt, we have moved hospitals to a more specialist kind so hopefully he wont have the problems like before.

We have an important meeting with the first hospital to discuss their useless answers to our second complaint that we had to wait 9 weeks to be answered. We will discuss the NICE guidelines that the hosp adopted as their policy but failed to undertake. They admit that they have made changes since my sons problems and also that some were because of our complaints. We are determined that they admit liability and therefore that they were negligent but answers so far have all been political and avoiding the issues. The meeting is between us and the Chief Executive and a Vascular Consultant, so at least we should get a discussion which is not possible when there is 9 weeks between Q and A. I have not managed to speak to a doctor in a hospital about filling out risk assessments but will see a GP tomorrow to ask questions. I spoke to a friend whose son is in last year of training and is on his second A&E practical assignment and he has no experience of risk assessments, so much for their training.

Listen to the BBC christmas lectures, Reith lectures which you can down load, excellent and appropriate and easy listening.

Good luck to you all. If it is one thing Ive learnt from this is that we all need to ask as many questions as possible and ask for a referral to an expert rather than a generalist who cannot know everything.

    Hi All,

    Had tbe GP today........

Apparantly there is no present or past clots in my lungs or so they say!!

Never said anything about scarring and also said I can stop the Warfarin aka POISON!!!

The Lining of my Lungs are likely inflamed and this explains the pains and shortness of breath etc!!

Does anybody know anything about this?

    Thanks in Advance

Hi All, We had our meeting with the top guys at hospital, it was as expected, political answers and lots of wriggling. However thay have  increased prophylaxis fo patients being discharged who had bowel surgery. They did admit to not filling in the VTE risk assessment forms correctly and only updating the first one instead of starting a new one each time, which I suppose is something, I think it is a reflection that they didnt know what they were doing and their care was sub standard. We have now finished the complaints system and have gone straight to the Ombudsman, we have a caseworker who should take around 4 weeks to investigate. We now wait.

Hi all, my son is going to receive treatment at Guys and St Thomas hosp, London at Mr Stephen Black's clinic to fit a stent into a vein in his leg. Hopefully when this is done in June he will be relieved of his pain and swelling. This hospital is still the only hosp to treat post thrombotic syndrome on the NHS in the UK. Have any of you tried to get treatment for problems after PEs and DVT?

Still no progress re hospital failures and still waiting for Ombudsman reply. Certainly expect to pursue the hospital through the courts if necessary. I feel better now about a good physical outcome for my son, fingers crossed. Just shows that when the NHS works well it is great and makes you feel confident again.

I hope others are doing better.

      Hi Gillian,

We have just heard from the Ombudsman and they say my son has a very good case against the hospital for failing to safeguard him. They said to use a solicitor as if we go for compensation he well get more from the court. We are pleased with this as we want the hospital to learn from their mistakes and admit liability and say SORRY.

I also want to let more people know and am going to write to the parliamentary committee that deals with VTE prevention.

It helps to feel that something good might come out of something so horrible and life changing. My son has been busy in the last 6 months having more surgery and meeting the consultant at Guys to arrange to have a stent inserted into his leg to be placed in his groin. This will hopefully help his symptoms. The stent in his groin is because he has developed May Thurners syndrome, as a result of the clot.

We learn more as life goes on.

Hope things are improving for you.
