Air Travel After TKR

Hi All,

I am 6 months post TKR and going on holiday in 10 days time.  We will be flying to Dubrovnik before embarking on our cruise.  The flight itself will be just short of 3 hrs and not being a seasoned traveller, I am wondering if for this journey, I will need to wear those travel socks, if so I am wondering if the socks you have to wear for six weeks after your op will suffice.  Unlike many I have seen, mine given to me by the private hospital I was in are quite smart and comfortable and comfortable to wear.  If needed would these suffice.

Many thanks

Doric

Wouldn't do any harm as you will still get swelling while sitting for three hours. Wearing the stockings will asist in keeping swelling down and keeping you safe ......I have had one foot done ..12years ago ...in July I had the other foot done ..triple hindfoot athrodeisis cast of next Thursday...can't wait .....enjoy your holiday you will be ready for it and so will your wife poor soul with all that running about she has done

Hi martinarvelo ...if your are looking at this triple athrodeisis..I wouldn't worry to much ..usually three hours in op theatre in a little pain for few days then home ..have to get used to crutches for three months 8wks NWB 4 weeks PWB ..cast comes off ankle very stiff ..swimming ..cycling walking ..takes six month to get over the worst including cast ect ..a full year for the ankle to fully fues ...as I have said before plan for a year from op and aim for the 12months ...this op is a miricle after this time you are able to run about four miles a day if you want cycle walk as far as you want ...I am buy camping and waterproofs ect gear in the sales for a big walk next summer called the hyndland way ..its a 100mile walk in lovely setting hills and lovely green villages  the best that scotland has to offer ..I know from previous ankle op on other foot ...I have had bad athritis in ankle for five years now unable to walk far with a brace ...now no brace no pain it's the best op ever I can't stress that enough ..it gives you control of your life back ...I would say go for it if you need it and get back your life ...

Many thanks Pauli for your post. . .I am seeing the specialist on Friday, and not sure what he will advise. I have got arthritis in both ankles, but also something called osteochondritis, as well as the typical heel spur, enthesitis, achilles tendon problems. . so it rather depends on what he thinks I can do!  I would love to get rid of ankle pain, but not sure what is the major cause... .arthritis,, or what. . . Glad it's been a good result for you!  Ankle pain really does get you down doesn't it. . and it all started suddenly just as the TKR was beginning to be good! frown

You may want to sit where it is easy to get up every hour and walk to front or back, just for circulation.  My doctor advised this years ago when I had a very bad fall on my knee.  Couldn''t hurt.

Enjoy your trip! Sounds like the socks are a good idea. I also agree about taking opportunities to get up and stretch your legs.

Thanks to you all for your advice, I will wear my sexy socks that they gave me at hospital.  Unfortunately when we booked, the seats with extra leg room had already been allocated, so we just had to settle with what was available.  It's only for a couple of hours then straight on to the ship so hopefully I should be ok - I can manage the car for that length of time. It was the travel socks that I had been advised to buy and wondered if the hospital issue would do the same job.

Even if you had the seats with extra leg room, it'd still be a good idea to get up every hour and walk to the rest room and back.  It's the circulaton caused by moving that you want.  Have fun!

Thanks granmonica for your advice - what we did when we couldn't have seats with extra leg room was to book seats with me on the aisle and my husband on the inside, which will enable me to move around a little more and also to get to the rest room a couple of times without having to disturb any fellow passengers.  My main concern was whether or not I could use the circulation stockings provided by the hospital or should I buy the travel socks if they do the same job. Again many thanks for your kind words.
