Alcohol, ibs? Pancreatitis? Help!

Does anyone else experience bad ibs pain and gas on left upper abdoman, side and back the day after alcohol? I'm currently waiting to see gastro specialist next month as suffered with upper left pain for 5 years, had all texts ct, ultrasound, bloods, stool, camera down throat at the start but everything was clear. Pain went away for about a year when I left a stressful relationship but has been back since I had my daughter almost 2 years ago. Had additional ultra sound a year ago nothing showed up and loads of blood tests all clear.

I do have the pain anyway but it's much worse after even a small amount of alcohol. I have cut it out completely but had 3 drinks at a wedding last night and pain is bad today plus up in night with upset stomach and anxiety shakes.

It's all really getting me down and if it wasn't for my children sometimes I feel like ending it! Just want to know what's wrong!

I'm paranoid it's my pancreas but at least 10 different  docs say they think it's bowel! I don't have pale stools ever and never vomit.

I also get sharp pains under left breast. All these pains and spasms only last a few seconds but can come quite frequently. Even a&e said they didn't think it was pancreas! Could this really just be ibs?

I know I need to stop drinking if it causes pain and some of you will just tell me never to drink again and I'm not going to cos it's not worth it! Just want to know if anyone else has this?! Feel like something constantly under left rib that rumbles when I push it!

Feel like I'm going crazy!

Oh Natalie,    Have you had liver function tests, I had a really bad virus I caught on holiday 25 yrs ago and didn't know I had it til. 7 yrs later  I'm sure your doc would have done them.  The enzines in the liver specifically gamma G&T need to be below 38.  Amyway your liver is on the right side so this seems to conflict with what your saying

its prob IBS.  It can take all shapes and forms and be brought on by many things there are also other things it could be but the best measure is blood tests and you seem to have had all these, try not to worry I'm sure it's IBS

Yes I've had many liver tests and always come back fine! Thank you for reply

    Hi Natalie,

IBS is not only brought on by drink its a syndrome that is not particularly brought on by anything and can happen at any time.

You didnt mention if your bowel movements are loose, solid, semi soid changeing  all the time and accompanied by pain in lower abdomin. That was my experience of IBS. What do you drink? do you drink the same alcoholic beverage all the time, if so try something else and see it you get the same symptoms. In my

experience certain alcohol can play havoc with my tum. If you get the same symptoms with all alcoholic drinks then I would say whatever is in the alcohol

is irritating your digestive system. Also, do you get the pain at any other time other then when you drink alcohol. You must weigh up all these possibilities and write down what you have eaten and drank when you get the symptoms. You may have an in tolerance to alcohol.  Hope this will be of some help.

Thank you. I am usually constipated but when I have a flare up (usually after alcohol) I get diarreha. It seems to be any drink at the moment. I've never been good with cider or rose wine but could drink everything else and handle my drink really well. Now it seems only a couple can cause me 3 days of pain and discomfort and bad constipation/diarreah all at same time almost!! It's mainly upper left abdoman and travels to side and back. When bad like it is at the mo my whole tummy hurts right down to my actual bottom which gets shooting pains up it! (Strange I know!) my diet isnt great but I can't link the pain to anything I eat in particular it's only alcohol which I really notice or if I'm feeling very worried about something. Pain in upper left there on and off most of the time but not continual, comes in spasms almost like wind and feels eased if I rub where it hurts and release gas! Which is why I'm hoping if it's pancreas issue it wouldn't be relieved like this and would be more constant and disabling. I do have bad anxiety since this has flared up again (had a year pain free) but it all started 5 years ago! I'm constantly googling symptoms and it's putting a huge black cloud over my life!

    HI Natalie,

Do you have any blood in your stool. Just to rule it out as a process of elimination, why dont you do a bowel cancer screening. Send for the bowel

screening kit and follow the instructions. Your can get one free from nhs and take it from there.  Kind regards.

Thank you. I did have blood in stool a few months ago and had it sent away it all came back fine.

    Hi Natalie,

Im glad that the result of your bowel screening test was fine. I think the only

option left is to see your GP and ask for an MRI scan, you dont mention that you have had one. Perhaps that the other tests you have had  missed something, this can happen. I do hope you get to the bottom of what is causing

    your pain. Kind regards.

Hi there, I know this is an old post but I've been through very similar experience recently. Googled my symptoms and out of everything I've read your symptoms relate the most.

I met up with friends for first time in a long while and we did drink quite a lot. The next day I woke up feeling like I pulled a muscle under my left Breast, the pain was mainly in my breast but I tried to ignore it. Follow on the next time I drank and I woke up in agony, pain in my breast/rib/ feeling like it went up my chest. Worse when I lay down. Drinking seemed to really aggravated it and that's what led me here. I'm terrified now. I've had a few health issues past yea.. Since having 2nd child diagnosed hypothyroid and had lots of blood tests on kidneys etc. I don't drink much really but did party in my 20's.

So scared there is something else falling apart. Did you ever get any answers? Thanks x

So sorry I only just noticed your question! No I'm still no closer to finding out what it is! All tests clear! Back on amitriptyline now which is only thing that seems to help. How are you?

Natalie I've been experiencing this exact pain in my left side under my ribcage for years! I have an appointment with a doctor next week and am hoping to get an MRI. I Always experience it after a night of drinking no matter how much. It sometimes rumbles or sends shooting sharp pains into my back or chest, but mostly it aches and throbs. It has been there on and off for over 10 years but has gotten much worse the last couple years. Sometimes it triggers my panic attacks or makes me feel short of breath. I've also had panic attacks for over 10 years. I'm terrified of what it could be. Did you ever find a solution? I'm eating Ibuprofen like candy to combat daily pain.

Sounds just like me!! Only thing that helps me is 10mg amitryptiline daily. I came off for a month and was in so much pain I'm now back on and within a week I feel lots better. Please let me know how you get on with MRI etc sound like whatever we have is the same! I'm hoping its gastritis I'm on a gastritis support group on face book and symptoms sound very similar.

Well anyway... I had blood tests, urine tests, fecal tests, and an ultrasound of my abdomen aaaaand nothing. Still getting the pain under my left ribcage after having a couple drinks, that lingers and aches and shoots pain for several days after. Also I quit taking any pain relievers a couple months ago unless its really bad and I'll take a few Ibuprofen every ove in a while. I had been taking like 12 a day for like a year until someone told me that is really bad for you so I cut it out altogether to see if it helps but so far Im just achier. My doctor suggested a colonoscopy after my fecal test contained blood. Buuuuut I haven't gone ahead with that. They offered no guesses at a diagnosis though. Hopefully someone gets this thing figured out. 😟

Your symptoms sound so familiar.  I have battled the same symptoms for many years.  The ER doctors assumed I was having pancreatitis attacks and would give me pain meds and send me home.  After having multiple attacks last year and being hospitalized with malnutrition as the official diagnosis because I had lost over 30 lbs and blood tests confirmed it, I finally got to see a GI doctor that did more tests and the CT scan showed that I had a bowel obstruction and nothing wrong with my pancreas.  I am not sure that this what was originally wrong with me because I had been having symptoms for several years.  My theory is that the chronic nature caused the inflammation in my colon that resulted in the obstruction.  I say this because the surgeon took out the inflamed colon section, about a foot and a half, and my symptoms are returning.  I have not had any alcohol at all in over 2 years because of the intense pain and problems associated with it afterwards.  So my guess is that the alcohol has only increased the severity in your case.  I was on a mostly liquid diet before the surgery, which helped.  I have now learned to stick to the liquids, even though I love to eat.  Meat is a big trigger for me, as well as vegetables.  There are lots of other good threads that can give you tips.  The best I can tell you is to listen to your body and avoid the triggers.  If it's only alcohol, then avoid it and be thankful that is the only one. I avoided it and it did not resolve.  My experience has told me that even if the doctors say they have the answer, chances are that it is just a quick fix for the symptom and the problem is still there.  What I put in my body seems to be the biggest problem and or solution.  I hope you find the answers and get some relief.  Gastro problems are no picnic.

I can drink a couple of drinks and feel fine but if I over do it I'm now getting pain in upper left back, I'd say middle upper next to my spine. Almost feels muscular as its tender to touch like I need a massage on it but I haven't done anything physical and it's only comes after drinking a lot.
