Alendronic Acid tabs

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hi I have just been diagnosed with early onset osteoporosis, since having a Densa scan. Dr prescribed vitamin C/d tabs and Alendronic acid 70 once per week. OnSunday morning I took my second tablet and it got stuck in my throat, I choked and coughed and eventually after about 10 mins I managed to get the tablet back, although it had started to dissolve. So I took another one. Well by Monday I was getting a croaky voice, by Tuesday it felt as though I have razor blades in my throat and now I have no voice and am in severe pain.Dr has prescribed omeprazol, and Gaviscon. Has anyone else had anything similar happen and if so did it take long to feel any better?

    Hi Andrea

Not quite the same thing but recently I was diagnosed with osteoporosis and put on calc carb and vitd 3 chewable tablet twice a day

The alendronic acid didnt agree with me. I took it on a Sunday and was sick {not physically} for the rest of the day. I went back to the doc and it has been changed to risedronate.....same family of tablets and I havent taken one yet. I had to have a complete dental check {which i had today} he said all I need to know is that you are taking that if I have to remove any teeth.

I'm on omneprozol or lansoprozol....not a lot of difference. They are a stomach protector when you take a lot of tablets especially anti inflammatory ones.

Hi Eileen this is all new to me and I have to say it's not sounding too good with the side effects of these drugs. I am in terrible pain with this throat, from what the Dr said it's going to take some time to get better. I really wish I'd never taken the thing. I will go back and discuss it further once this all clears up.

hope you get on ok with your new meds 😊

      Hi Andrea

There is a thread about alendronic acid under the osteoporosis forum...its frightening when you read the side effects.....this one I'm going to start taking is from the same family so dont know if it will be any better

You poor thing, hope you're feeling better. I was on it for about 6moths, then i needed 3 dental implants, and the surgeon told me to come off it. I did for about a year, and I looked into it, and didn't want to go back on it. I was put on HRT by a gynaecologist for my osteoporosis. The only draw back was having periods again, but took a while. It did improve the bones, and am looking at other alternatives, via that route now. I won't have a hysterectomy at the moment though.

RE: the biphosomate route, there are annual infusions you can have, maybe you could look into that. good luck

I know this wasnt to me naomi but as I'm starting biphosmates soon after a dental check today  that is worth remembering. I'm not sure that I'm happy taking them with the side effects I've read about but not sure which is worse, side effects or not taking them and possibly bones getting weaker

Thanks for the reply Naomi, think I might be going along the HRT line once this throat gets better, I'm not willing to go through this pain again 😥

First, I am in the U.S. Omeprazole and lansoprazole are proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are now linked to bone loss, especially if taken long-term and/or at high doses. If meds such as these, which cause bone loss, are going to be prescribed by doctors to mitigate bad effects of the bone-loss bisphosphonates, then we are truly entering into an endless loop. Not sure how much doctors even care about that; they seem to counter all arguments against dangerous drugs with the trite rejoinder that "there are always tradeoffs." I was just told that I "needed" a bisphosphonate (e.g., alendronic acid or Reclast) for my osteoporosis. (Bad T score in the spine; borderline in the hip.) While I can't delude myself that osteoporosis is a good thing to have, my thought is that I "need" a bisphosphonate the same way I need a hole in the head. I've lost considerable trust in the medical establishment over the years. The unhealthy symbiosis between medicine and Big Pharma is a major reason why.

I totally agree with you Alison. I honestly can't believe a tiny tablet getting stuck in my throat can cause such painful and damaging effects, at the moment it's getting worse each day, I really hope that because it was only my second tablet this doesn't go on for months

Hi Aliison, I was diagnosed about 5 years ago and put off having the injunction due to a demanding job, and after reading about the side effects thought I needed to take time to think about it, the time has come to go to see the specialist and I am still not sure what to do for the best.

I have also got fibromyalgia which can be very painful so to think that these injunction could make me feel worse than I do now is a daunting

      thought.

what did you chose to do?

Andrea, esophageal irritation and worsening of GERD (gastroespheageal reflux disease are among the most common "tradeoffs" of bisphosphonates, including the type you're taking. I'd view that as a contraindication to the med you were prescribed and woud either stop this class of meds altogether (if you feel comfortable doing so) or ask the doctor to switch you to a med that is unlikely to cause the throat pain. My doctor recommended IV infusions of Reclast for the reason that I have a history of GERD. I refuse to take Reclast, either, but if you did want to try a bisphosphonate for awhile you might look into that one. Another is called Prolia. I don't know if they're marketed under diffrent names in the U.K. To me, the drugs are too much alike in terms of side effects for me to feel that Drug X is sigificantly safer than Drug Y.

There's no doubt whatsoever that I won't be taking AA or anything related to it again. I am willing to look into other options, but as I said before I now know how something so tiny can make you feel so ill I just hope that this is not permanent, I really have not felt so ill and scared before

Hi I am totally confused  about bisphonates now......I havent started yet beccause like I said earlier just had a dental check.

I am finding so much different information on UK sites and USA sites....not just this on lots of things.

I'm not saying which is right and which is wrong....if thee is such a thing but when you live in the UK and read side effects that dont seem to be as bad as USA one then you think....which is worse....minor side effects or osteoporosis getting worse??

It is very confusing when comparing UK & USA sites.  I know 2 people taking AA  and they get on fine with it, so I'm sure that like everything we only come to these forums when there's a problem, saying that I am now far to scared to give them another chance. The big question will be what next, and I'm sure if I look it up there will be plenty to put me off lol

Feeling as I do I can't imagine ever being any different 🙆

      Hi Andrea

I dont blame you......in your position I dont think I would take them again....its the unknown side efffects or the ones you know nothing about until it actually happens if you know what I mean

I wouldnt take AA again because I gave it a try and was sick the day I ttok it for the full day....I continued for quite a while before going back tothe GP but this one I'm on is the same family as AA so probably the same side effects.

I'm sure I'll probably take it.
