Alendronic Acid tabs

Hi I have just been diagnosed with early onset osteoporosis, since having a Densa scan. Dr prescribed vitamin C/d tabs and Alendronic acid 70 once per week. OnSunday morning I took my second tablet and it got stuck in my throat, I choked and coughed and eventually after about 10 mins I managed to get the tablet back, although it had started to dissolve. So I took another one. Well by Monday I was getting a croaky voice, by Tuesday it felt as though I have razor blades in my throat and now I have no voice and am in severe pain.Dr has prescribed omeprazol, and Gaviscon. Has anyone else had anything similar happen and if so did it take long to feel any better?

Hi Andrea - Fortunately I haven't had that problem, although I do have trouble getting some tablets down.  I have severe osteoporosis and 4 compression fractures in my spine.  I have recently had an Aclasta infusion which willl help to strengthen my bones, but it is not going to heal my compression fractures.  I am allergic to anti-inflammatories and codeine which unfortunately most painkillers contain.  I tried Tramadol and got great pain relief but after a week my ankles swelled so much I couldn't get my shoes on, so that was the end of that.  I have finally persuaded my GP to refer me to an orthopaedic specialist re my compression fractures.  After searching the internet I found a minimally invasive operation where they make a small cut and clean out the fractures and then they are supposed to knit together.  The wound is then closed and you lay on the operating table for about 2 hours and that should heal the pain (according to the article).  I'll probably have to wait ages to see a specialist but at least that's better than nothing.  I am difficult to prescribe for and have an appointment with a pain specialist I have seen before but not until 8 DECEMBER - ridiculous but that's how the health system in Dunedin, NZ at present.

I am massively opposed to the osteo drugs. That said, that doesn't necessarily mean that supplements are safe. "Natural" doesn't equate to "safe."

      Hi Allison

I agree with you......so many people think the word natural means safe and no side effects.....Not true

Why have most of my posts been deleted? I am not afiliated with any retail company, nor were my posts worded offensively, nor did they meet any of the other state criteria for exclusion.

Typo in my first reply; I meant, of course, "stated (not "state" ) criteria."

      Hi Allison,

They were deleted as they were direct replies to user donatella so would not make sense once I deleted the other user's posts.
