Allodynia in fibromyalgia.

Allodynia is where your skin can hurt to touch and where mild pressure from clothing can hurt too. I have noticed recently that my clothes are hurting me the slightest pressure from clothing. feels like Ive an elephant standing on my back this is especially when wearing a bra, thin nightdress or top. The pain has been unbearable it has had me rolling round the bed in sheer agony. Have any of you experienced the same.

It sounds like a very unpleasant symptom for you, I do favour not wearing my bra at home but that is because I get pain round my ribs from it even though it's not tight.

      Take care, very gentle hugs

Just the slightest touch on my back has been the worst for me, the pains so severe that even when someone comes to give a hug, I used to tell them not so tight please. Since I have been on my ayruvedic herbal remedies, these pains have reduced by 90%, after 20yrs of constant pains. wink xx

Just read a bit on it and was interested to see its connected to migraine, something luckily I've never suffered from but the word allodynia means 'other pain', ie pain experienced when there should be none, as from a light touch and that it can be experienced other than in the head area.  Very interesting and more ammo to wave at the doctors.  Thank you Kaz.  Hope you're feeling okay today hon. xx

Hi Kaz. Bit better today thanks.  I went on a day trip whilst away which involved a long car journey both ways and quite a bit of walking in between.  Didnt feel tired while doing it but the next day I started to ache and by the following day (day we were travelling home) I could hardly move and everything but everything hurt to hell and back.  I was so wiped out I just sat in the hotel courtyard and read a book all day, even eating was hard work and my tummy got really upset - I ate the same as everyone else so it wasn't food poisoning etc.  The plane journey was uncomfortable and a late night arrival home.  Saturday at home I couldnt move all day, just laid on the couch and drifted in and out of sleep. What a wimp!  This morning was the first time I felt any improvement and have managed to keep food down okay too.  What a flippin nightmare - it'd ridiculous that one day out should give rise to such a wipe out, I feel really annoyed that something 'invisible' and not life threatening should have such a major effect - it's totally ridiculous that we should suffer like this without any real identification of what's causing it.  I think I could probably accept it better if I'd been diagnosed with something more serious or terminal but I find it hard to rationalise it in my mind when not all doctors even recognise it as an actual condition.  GRRRR rant over smile

So sorry to hear you suffer from migraines, touch wood I have never had much of a problem with them, had a few as a child and mostly they were as a result of car sickness but generally I'm headache free - wish the rest of me was pain free too eh.

Thank you so much Kaz for putting a name to this symptom.  I raised this with my doctor and she shook her head and said she didn't really have an answer for what was causing it.  I have it in various places, I cant bear to have my arms touched at all - my poor partner is getting very sad that every time he wants to give me a hug when I feel rotten, he cant because it hurts my skin.  I have it on the sides of my knees too, It feels like the skin has been grazed badly or a carpet burn but there's nothing visible.  If I kneel down at a wrong angle it feels like I've knelt on glass yet when I put a finger to the skin it's got a dead feeling, like nerve damage or tooth anaesthetic.  It was really worrying me which I why I brought it up when seeing the doc but she seemed to have no clue as to its cause etc.  I'm going to research allodynia and poke it right up her left nostril!!

loxie you never fail to make me laugh poking dr up the nostril. Ive had it for a while I only wear a bra when out as it causes so much pain wearing one. wearing a silk nighty feels like I have an elephant standing on my back when I tried to explain that to a dr and also a specialist. They looked at me like I was stark raving mad.mind you I was begging to wonder my selflol i have to laugh or else I would cry.Im like you get so angry frustrated that when we try to do anything and try to have some enjoyment, fibro knocks us straight back down we cant do anything. It has such an impact when we do do anything.its like you said something that is invisable and not life threatning has such a big impact on us.we are fighting our enire body, our whole body is affected not just one part of it. That is alot to deal with and contend with. its a flaming hard battle day in day out. wish an end was in sight with it for us all hopefully 1 day wish it would hurry up though. take care gentle hugs x

    Hi Kaz.

I get this in my feet, when in bed.

Have to have my feet sticking out of bed.

      Hi Janet,

I was just saying the same thing, do you find that even the pressure of wearing socks is too much at times?

    • Posted

      Hi Boqer.

Most of the time yes. I find that sometimes I can wear what are just the trainer socks, so only small, other times not even them.

Having to wear tubigrip on my ankle at the moment and am in agony, but would be worse with the pain from my ankle if I didn't wear it

It's the better of two evils.

It's ok in the summer, but don't know what I'll do in the winter.

No, I agree about the winter! I just end up getting really cold feet 😑 Do your feet ever burn on the soles? Mine do often and along with the pressure of socks it's just a bit much, they also really ache in the joints and are painful to walk on.
