Am I pushing it a bit?

Morning all,

I am nearing my 6wk check up (2/4) and feel I'm doing ok. My husband though thinks I'm pushing on too quickly. I was able to ditch one crutch after a few days home and now walk with just one stick. Sometimes I take a few steps around the home without any aid and he completely freakes out. He says he thinks I should wait to be told if it's ok to be doing this when I see my Consultant in 4 days time.

I feel ok with everything I walk as much as possible and rest when I need to, even go to bed every afternoon for an hour or so.

My husband is really very supportive and I know he worries about me but do you think I'm trying to run before I can walk? I'd love to hear of anyone elses experience. I'm starting to think maybe I am hurting myself without realising it. I have no pain really just a bit of aching and stiffness and just take maybe a couple of paracetamol each day. Scar ok although it is quite long and a bit bumpy, so using the bio oil. Have had a very blue days and been a bit teary, all perfectly normal from reading other posts on here. So hope I'm not overdoing it.

By the way if you're in the UK don't forget the clocks need to go forward an hour!

Hi. I'm also 6 weeks post op this Thurday  and have used one crutch since week 4. As everyone has said "go with what feels right", Can't wait until I can drive next Friday - look out Leicestershire !!!!lol

I think it's great your husband cares so much, bless. Mine drove me barmy worrying too, but rather that than some of the partners of hippies on here who just don't seem to get what we have been through.

Going out today to a Natonal Trust place and then lunch at a pub, Heaven to be able to do this. biggrin . My pat on the head for all the days stuck inside. x

I think you are making lovely progress and keep doing what your body feels like it should be doing. I have just read your post out to my other half and he says him and your hubbie can compare notes. In the shower yesterday I dropped the shampoo and of course it clattered and banged as it went. Well you would have thought the house was falling down the speed he came running into the bathroom to check it wasn't me clattering around. I reminded him that I would be a little bit more vocal if it was me clattering down. Haha. He has just said it's like watching a child learning to walk, do you let them stumble a bit or quickly grab them to safety. Perhaps there should be a forum for partners of people who have had hip replacements for them to ask. Blue days and feeling teary, I know them. Lol.

Keep up the good work and do what you feel is right! I found that showing my other half this forum helps him so he knows when to take a step back and when to hold on tight.

      Hi Emma

I understand exactly what your partner is saying about watching a child learning to walk

and I can imagine the shampoo incident lol ! Its lovely he is so caring.

I think the idea of a partners forum is a good idea lol.

Emma I have just read your post to my husband and it really is laugh out loud funny. My husband gave me that knowing look and I think he feels better that there are other spouses out there in panic mode.

      Kind regards

Jane I'm glad it amused you, it makes me chuckle too. Today other half went to supermarket. Whilst he was out I thought i would have a shower. My other half came home whilst I was still in the shower and started the 'what if you fell' talk at which point I held up the house phone and waved it in his direction. Never before have I taken a phone into the shower with me but there it was. He stopped his talk and left me to it. If it makes him feel better knowing I have a phone with me in the shower then I'll take the phone. It does no harm and keeps him sane.

      haha. Bless him.

sounds as if u are all doing well.  My husband is going for his 6 week check tomorrow but still needs two crutches.  Hip fine but the operated leg is so swollen it's making it impossible for him to do things or sit properly.   How did you all manage to go out for lunch etc.  we have been struggling.  WAlking outside with two crutches is fine but evarying else seems to be a problem.  Any alive?

Oh aj, please don't worry, I didn't post on here to make anyone feel that they are doing anything wrong or that things just aren't happening as quickly. Lots of people have said that we are all so different, but we can share our worries and feelings and quite often with humour and empathy.

I am sure you're husband is doing fine and please let us know how he goes on tomorrow.

      Best wishes

Thanks Jane will do. I think reading all the various posts I will be buying some private physio after tomorrow as nothing from nhs and I don't know if I am doing things correctly for him. Bless him he has not complained once since his op even after 3 days in HDu...

The  You sound very much like myself, ferretswife.  I'm 4 weeks and 4 days post op and pretty much walk all over the house now with no crutch or stick though I often take my grabber around with me. I'm not really having any pain but can feel a tightness along my scar. I have some bio oil but unsure whether I can use it yet.

As long as you have no pain then I can't see you could be damaging yourself without realising it as your body will tell you if you are doing that.

Keep up the good work 😊

Hi Ali, Sounds like you're doing very well. I too am walking a little without any aid but I soon start to limp so maybe I'm not ready yet really, will ask my Consultant at 6wk check this Thurs

I have been using bio oil from wk2 after end stitches removed , (apparently I was glued in between), it really helped soften the scar and removed some of the dried yucky stuff before I was able to shower, (sorry to be so graphic)!

      All the best
