Amitripiline Withdrawal symptoms

Posted , 82 users are following.

Hi,  I was taking 75/100mg of amitripiline for chronic pain.  (5 Yrs)  The pain has now disappeared & i came off amitripiline over 6 weeks.  After about 3 to 4 weeks, i am still waking up extremely early & having trouble going to sleep.  But the main thing that concerns me is, i have developed a prickly sensation all over my body which i have had for about 7 weeks.  The doctors thinks this has nothing to do with withdrawal from amitripilne, i have had antihistimines & creams which has no effect.  Has anyone experienced this sensation on withdrawal.

I'm so grateful to find this thread. I'm sad to see how awful this drug is.

I have apparent peripheral nerve damage in my shin for the last 7 months. No pain, but was prescribed amitriptyline, 10mg, and took it for 6 weeks before realising I was having a bad reaction. It started with a fuzzy feeling in my foot, then shin, which I optimistically thought was nerve regeneration. Then there were the night sweats. The speech went next, slurring with a stammer, then my hands and arms went weak, then tremors in my hands. I was inconsolable, thinking my body was failing me, not realising it was the drug. I stopped straight away. Now I'm three weeks off it, my gp says its out of my system. I don't think it is.

It left me with a weakened left arm/elbow. Which is now tormenting me with pins and needles, both my legs and feet too. My skin is still reacting to the sun, I'm tanning when I never have changed colour in my life, I'm not sleeping with the pin prick feelings and it's driving me mad, I dread going to bed now. Has anyone else experienced that symptom? Did it ease eventually? Any words would be so appreciated, thank you.

well I think it is over. I started taking Trazedone And I sleep the whole night. i used to take it years ago before Smitryptoline and it always worked and I stopped cold turkey and never any problems. so now I started it again I took 1 pill 50 mg and I slept till 11:30 and felt tired during the day so I cut down to 1/4 pill and still slept wonderfully till 9am I have no more withdrawl symptoms so Im sure I have beat it. Speak to your doctor to get a prescription. He will give it to you happily cause it is not addictive. This is a Godsend and it will stop your withdrawl

symptoms I am now free of it all and I lnow you will too. I love you all and wish you an easy recovery from this hell

i hope you haven't just changed one addictive drug for another. it took me 4 years to get over the side effects of amitriptyline and now i take the Phenergan. i did only ever take 20mgs max of the amitriptyline so took it for relaxation rather than depression. all so difficult. do what's right for you and advise others not to take amitriptyline! good luck and sweet dreams

hi FAith. what is your dosage of Phenergan and what time if day do you take it? Has it made a difference in your health. IS it a 1st generation antihistamine like CHlor-TRimeton? thank you.

promethazine hydrochloride 25ngs x 2 at bedtime. part of phenothiazines. blocks histamine and relaxes. it relaxes but doesn't block anything as still have my allergy/hayfever. Given for hayfever and difficulty sleeping. interesting thing is on 2 week safari last June i didn't take any and slept like a baby! there are some conditions for taking it so you need to check

Hi I was on 25mg for 10 years and then 50mg for another ten years. I decided they weren't doing anything for me so have spent the past year coming off 50mg. I am now on 10mg and gradually reducing. I have lost 6 kg in weight but I have been waking very early in the mornings and have had muscle aches and some pins and needles and headaches but the best thing is I have lost weight and generally feel happier. It has taken me 18 months to get this far with a few relapses in between but I'm nearly there. So keep persevering and take it slowly. Ps My sleep is getting slowly better
