Amlodipine & Indapamide side effects ?

Hi everyone, I'm a 65 year old male, six weeks ago my doctor put me on meds for high blood pressure, Amlodipine 10mg & Indapamide 2.5mg, he also advised I quit smoking which I have done. Up until recently I have  enjoyed a healthy sex life but now find myself suffering from erectile dysfunction, I think this is a direct result of the meds and I want to stop taking them. Are there known issues using these drugs.

All drugs have side effects, and some drugs will adversely affect some people but not others.  Diuretics are known to cause this problem so of the two medications you have mentioned, I would be inclined to feel that Indapamide is the culprit.  Amlodipine is well known to cause ankle swelling, especially at the 10mg dose, so it is quite possible that your GP has included Indapamide to offset this side effect. Worth reporting the problem to your GP and asking to try without the Indapamide in the first instance.

Thanks for responding, the Amlodipine on it's own did not work my BP was still high, and yes my ankles did swell up taking Amlodipine. I mentioned this to my GP which is when he added Indapamide, these two meds are successfully controlling my blood pressure, but I just was not expecting this kind of side effect. I'm not very happy about it I had no idea that erectile dysfunction was a possibility before taking these meds.

There will be many other pills or combinations of pills that you can be tried on that will not cause erectile dysfunction.  Indapamide is a diuretic and my Stroke Association leaflet lists impotence among the side effects of Diuretics.  I have experienced unwanted side effects from many different BP pills tried over the last 18 months or so.  However, I already have kidney disease and am considered an "awkward patient" in that my body resents medication!.  The only one so far that doesn't seem to have produced any discernible side effects is Losartan Potassium but unfortunately it is not lowering my BP.  However, many find it successful, and my pharmacist says it is the BP pill about which he hears least complaints from patients.  Perhaps an option for you.

Thank you MrsO for all this good information, I will be seeing my GP next week and hopefully he can come up with some alternatives.

The solution should be to prescribe another BP tablet and not a diuretic to  deal with the side effects of it.

If you have a problem in this area it might benefit you to ask your doctor to prescribe Cailis for you.

You should not stop taking the other meds that you have been prescribed.

Taking medications can be a trade-off.

If you need medication for your hypertension then you need it,  or run the risk of your BP becoming unstable again.

Cialis can be prescribed not as an aid to reducing blood pressure, but to overcome the effects of ED, and in this respect it is very effective.

Whatever you decide I feel that you should discuss all your available options with your doctor before taking yourself off anything that has been prescribed for you, otherwise you could run the risk of a stroke which could prove catastrophic.

Thanks for responding, I've booked an appointment to go and see my GP and I will be asking him if there are any alternatives BP treatments that don't have this particular side effect. I won't just be stopping the treatment.

You don't say how high your BP was or how much the meds have lowered so far.

On the day I was diagnosed with hypertension it was extremely high 206/128, I had no idea because I felt OK. After seven weeks on meds and quitting smoking using nicotine patches I'm at 120/87 but it does fluctuate from day to day.

The diagnosis was based once only first time reading?  Usually readings are taken over several weeks. Though like you I was treated from day one for a reading of 210/110 and I had stopped smoking seven years before and had been salt free for seventeen years.. Fifteen years later I often get morning readings just as high.

Oh well done, not only on that successful reduction in your BP but also quitting smoking.  Keep it up!

How much money are you saving ? Think how it would enhance your pension pot if you put it into your pension.

After nine months the money saved paid for my holiday in Hong Kong and China. My wife had to pay for herself:-)

yes, I was spending £32 per week on tobacco, so the savings are considerable, only wish I quit earlier in my life, it was only when my health began to suffer that I made a determined effort to stop, one thing I do know for sure is that using my own willpower to stop was useless, I really needed to do it in a supervised way, my doctor advised a smoking cessation  course, I saw a counsellor once a week, had my CO levels checked, used the patches, this is what worked for me, but everyone is different.

Looking at your age in the first post it is probably too late to add to your pension pot but can have a nice holiday for £1600 and enjoy better wines:-)
