Anal Skin Tag Surgery - botched recovery?

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hi everyone,

I had an internal hem banded in January 2021. In February, I had two or three anal skin tags removed. I had them for a few years before i decided to get them checked by a colorectal surgeon. The after pain from the surgery was awful. I noticed there was still three bumps down there. I had my five week check up on March 30, 2021. My doctor told me that it is swelling and nothing to be concerned about. She saw two cuts still visible, so those had to heal before the swelling would subside and the tags would go away. I am now at six weeks post op and a new bump emerged. I am unsure if this is irritation, new tag or hem.

Has this happened to anyone? You are recovering properly then have a set back?

I added a picture. The yellow arrow is the new bump.image

Anyone? the bump seems to have decreased a bit today. I just want this to all be over. The removal recovery was so painful.

Hey, I am 7 weeks post op & I'm having the same issue! Mine is alot smaller though and sits in the middle of my bottom, it's like it's half in half out if that makes sense?? There looks to be a skin tag that the surgeon missed above, im booked in to see my doctor end of April because I NEED to know if it goes away or its staying like that. How did you have yours removed, surgically?

Hey! When i saw my doctor at 5 weeks, she said the top bump (closer to my vag) and the bottom one would heal. She looked at it and said both still had open wounds (small cuts) and needed to heal completely before the swelling would go down. She told me it looked good for 5 weeks post op! My in office procedure was under local anesthesia and she zapped the skin tags away with a laser. She then left the wounds open without stitches. What about for you? I think the picture i posted with the arrow is a new hem because i used ointment she gave me before the banding procedure in January and it shrunk. My next appointment isnt until June 8 and i just want this to all be over.

Did she say how long it would take to heal? my surgeon just said there was still quiet a bit of swelling when I went for my appointment, I should have asked questions! I had mine done during a colonoscopy so I dont want to go down that path again lol! Did your procedure hurt? I'd call & ask your doctor, maybe she can fit you in a bit faster to check it out! I hope you can get some answers. I haven't had a new bump pop up but I'm pretty sure there's a new skin tag which is so weird because the surgeon said I had no haemorrhoids when he did the colonoscopy & my recovery was 10/10. I'll try send a photo if you want to compare.

Have you had reoccurring Haemorrhoids? I got mine when I had my first son 13 years ago, then through my other labours but never again, just the awful skin tags left behind.

I have had these skin tags for about 10 or more years (I am 30). I had haemorrhoids as a young adult from straining when I'd go to the bathroom. I have always had a bad stomach. My doctor didn't tell me how long it would take to heal but she asked to see me again in 8-12 weeks to make sure its all healed. That is 4 months from when I had the procedure. I might call her before June or go get a second opinion. The surgery itself didn't hurt. Only pinched when she put the injection in to numb me. The first two weeks were awful though. It hurt to bend down, go to the bathroom, etc.

Yes, you can show me yours to compare! If your doc didn't see a haemorrhoid, you wouldn't have a skin tag. Those appear after the haemorrhoid doesn't heal all the way up. It is very possible that its swelling still or irritation caused new swelling. My doctor kept reminding me how sensitive the area is and that you are causing irritation every time you have a BM. We also dont know how our body will scar when it heals. I am trying to remain faithful that it will heal properly and the surgery will be worth it. I just want a normal butthole lol

This is me today. See how the bump I posted earlier is now not swollen? I think it was irritated and swelled. I still have the large one on top which the doctor was afraid to remove because how close it is to my vagina skin (she said that area is very sensitive). The rest of the bumps look like skin tags but I don't get how I can have those since she removed them.... so maybe it is just swelling or my body is forming scar tissue.

Hey there! Gosh here I was thinking it was a quick and easy procedure! My surgeon didn't tell me that I'd have a lump so when I felt it and looked in the mirror I cried 😂 I had Haemorrhoids when I gave birth (19, now 32) & they left the skin tags but I was bleeding when I had BM so the surgeon said it's probably internal but they were healed & I just had the skin tags.

I can definitely see a difference in your photos, is it swelling when you have a BM? My bump has a bit of a hard lump,.it's so hard to explain but I was thinking mine was scar tissue too.

Amen to the normal butthole!! I'll try post a couple of photos soon 🙂

Does your look like you have tags still or does it look like raised skin because its scar tissue?

Raised skin, a bit loose I would say. But one of them gets irritated easily.

Don't be too concerned. There's no such thing as a normal butthole. Do you still have difficulty cleaning?

    • Posted

Yes, the cleaning is just as bad as before! To me, it looks just the same as it did pre-surgery! I know it wont ever be "normal" but the bumps that were removed surgically should be gone. If that swelling went down, I would be content. When it gets irritated, does it look like a hem?

😦 It should I guess, but does it look more like scar tissue or bumps? It should heal within the next month or so. But if it doesn't, that might be bad. Are you putting on any antibiotic ointment to help you right now? And have you asked the doctor about it again?

I have never gone through this before so I am unsure what scar tissue looks like down there. The bumps I have are the same bumps I had 3 weeks ago at my 5 week check up. My doctor said I was healing properly and I still had two small cuts that she could see when she moved the bumps to take a look. She made my next appointment for June. As I stated before, no ointments! She didn't prescribe me anything and at my check up told me to leave it alone.

Hey there, How are you doing, has there been any change??

I went to the doctors last week & she says my lump will stay & won't go down. She was quiet dismissive actually so I'm pretty devastated.. I'm.in the process of booking an appointment to see a colorectal surgeon 40 minutes away..I'm very interested in everyone else's recovery stories. I wasn't in much pain after my surgery so I'm starting to wonder if it was ever done right.

Hi! That is really upsetting news! My doctor is a colorectal surgeon and she was dismissive to me in the beginning telling me that anal tags are "normal" and can be left alone. I am glad you are going to get a second opinion! I read one article online that said something like "your doctor might tell you its not possible to remove but it is with the right surgeon."

This past weekend, I walked about 5 miles and the next morning, I woke up to swelling again! So I called my doctors office and she was booked all of May except for today. So I am headed in this afternoon to tell her that I have stopped healing. The bumps I have now, I had 5 weeks ago. They haven't reduced in size and they have swelled multiple times causing a sensation and itch. I will let you know after my appointment!

Hi! I just went to the doctor. I told her about how that area keeps swelling when I am out for the day or exercising. She said that is normal. There is a vein there that when you walk all day or exercise, it will swell. She suggested that I use a hem cream to make that vein swelling go down. She said its too flat that its not a hem that she can band. She said the larger bump I have still has an open wound! She suggested that when I have a BM to use soap and water. I have been using wet wipes (like baby wipes) and she said that is SO bad. There is alcohol in them that causes irritation.

I asked her what the solution is if at my next check up, nothing changed. She said "surgery again." She is hesitant to do it again stating that any time you create a wound in that area, you never know how it will heal. She said, "are you just doing this for cosmetic reasons?" I felt like she was judging me on why I want it and doesn't believe it will be worth it. I explained that to me, the area looks the same it did pre-surgery and she just nodded. ugh!!!!

Let me know when your next appointment is with the next doctor. I have my next follow up on June 8.
