Loss of appetite is common in PMR, yes. Although technically anorexia does just mean that, it has become synonymous with anorexia nervosa which is a very different kettle of fish so I don't think it is a term I would use - anorexia nervosa is a psychological condition where the patient refuses to eat food and that is rather different.

But loss of appetite and weight loss, probably as a result, are very common in PMR. It didn't happen to me - it was more I couldn't be bothered to cook - and I certainly didn't lose weight unfortunately! At least it gives you a head start on the pred-related weight gain.

the anorexia was used in a article I found yesterday through this forum, I do know about anorexia nervosa as my daughter had it in her youth and was in hospital for a long time. But as for me I have lost no weight,, still gained it and wonder if I will ever eat normally again.

You poor thing having to get through that! My older daughter tried it after being laughed at at school for her curves when wearing shorts but we noticed very quickly she wasn't eating. Then she heard Princess Diana talking about bulimia and tried that instead so that we thought all was OK. Her father was very ill at the time so I was rather distracted. Eventually she scared herself because she no longer had to make herself sick and went to a teacher who told me. She still has a bizarre relationship with food and is very slim most of the time - but she does eat. In fact, she bolts her food which drives me up the wall.

Me - I don't eat a lot but it has to be good food and while I find deciding what to cook and cooking it downright boring, if you take me for a meal I'm right up there! I think part of it in PMR is the effort required and you simply don't feel up to it and it gets into a downward spiral. The worst part of eating out (apart from too much salt) is the enormous size of the portions. I take a doggy box with me and often get enough left for the next day. One local restaurant does lovely food with small portions - love going there smile

my daughter went bulemic after anarexic, a really terrible thing but she is now nearly 40 years old with 2 children, she will never be fat, for me it is not about being bothered,I really would be happy to eat nothing and have been like this for nearly 3 years, doctors said I was sufferind with depression although I had a Job walking could not lift arms, could not put a bra on intil preds , took over 2 years to be diagnosed and now feel very tired and really want to do nothing, but at least I am alive and not in much pain anymore, am meeting up with some other people who live in my area, it will be really nice to be able to talk to people who understand how you feel!

I can't believe that people have to wait months, or even years - as you did - to be diagnosed.  I had the usual pains, couldn't lift arms above shoulders, hands hurt, ankles swollen, but it wasn't until I couldn't get out of bed one morning that I went to my doctor.  He took one look at me and said "I know what's wrong with you Mrs S, but I will take bloods and give you my opinion then".  The next day he rang me up to go to the surgery.  ESR and CRP both over 100.  He put me on pred straight away and had me go to the surgery once a week for several weeks.  I had just put the pains down to old age (I was 72 then).  Over 4 years later he is still looking after me amazingly.

I was in my early 50s, at the gym most days so not unfit, textbook symptoms except my bloods were normal. I managed for 5 years, being told at regular intervals there couldn't be anything wrong. Then it hit like a 10 ton truck, I couldn't get out of bed. It still took 6 months to get a dose of pred after I presented the suggestion to the GP - and even then it  was a condescending offer from the rheumy for 6 weeks to get me through a trip to the USA. The result was magic in 6 hours - but the rheumy didn't want to know and refused to listen or give me more pred. He wanted to use sulphasalazine - which does nothing in PMR and has some charming side-effects. Luckily a different GP to whom I went in tears was more helpful.

And by the way - one lady I know put on 6st with pred...

think your doctor is much better than mine, it was a mouth specialist who diagnosed me, I had a spot on my tongue for 6 weeks went privately to specialist who said my mouth was fine and wanted to know why I was on antidepressants, he sat me down asked me lots of questions and said I had PMG, which I had never heard of, so after 2 years of suffering and being emotionally upset because I knew something was wrong all got sorted and now feel much better by just knowing it is not all in my head.

Good to know.  I thought it was just me.  Meat & so many other foods have become so undesirable to me.  Hate to cook & handle raw meat.  I   could live on ice cream & dark chocolate, but of course, I am careful.

Oh Mary, it is so good to know that someone else feels like me,I could live on ice cream and chocolate, how strange, I always loved meat and now I hate even cooking it for my husband. worry I dont eat enough but have lost no weight.

No sadly with all my strange eating habits have not lost any weight.  In fact gained 5 pounds.  Dark chocolate is supposed to be good for you.  Of course, in small amounts.  If in the US Dove makes excellent dark chocolate. :-)

I read about one lady in the US who put on 150 lbs. Poor thing.

Dark chocolate is supposed to be an anti inflammatory and so is red wine!

Perfect - I'd rather a glass of red wine with a bit of 80-85% chocolate than a piece of cake...

Ye my daughter was 2 and half stone under weight when she was about 12 or 13 and there was a lot of bullying going on,she was seen by a physiologist and they we're going down the road of anorexia, but I wasn't so sure, they wanted to take her into hospital and beg them not too cause knew she would go down hill, I was distracted cause I had a son very ill in intensive care with blood  clot he did recover thank god, but had to work on her to put on weight, but even today she has a issue with food, she 30 now

but years ago I used to listen outside bathroom cause thought she had bulimia,  think she did but very worrying, I find that Eileen when you go out for a meal portions are too large and I always eat everything and feel terrible afterwards. But I was away for a weekend about 6 weeks ago, we were having meal in hotel and it was 5 course and I was dreading it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it the portions were really small and I felt really good after it cause i hadn't eaten too much

Good hotels here in Italy do multi-course meals with delightfully small portions. We have been known to share the full meal between us and it is perfect!
