I also am suffering from Atrophic Vaginitis. I am 61 & single. I have been on HRT for several years & had reduced my dose by half over the past year, which was fine, I felt well. I am of slim build, I'm fit, walk several miles a day & eat a very healthy diet. I have always looked very good for my age. I have not had sex for ten years & I have no problem with that. Gone off it since my menopause took hold. In January this year I had a bladder infection, felt really poorly, it was treated with anti biotics which worked. But since then I have had constant problems, very sore, back & front, inflamed vagina & itching. It's not thrush, I've over treated myself for that, it's not cystitis, it's not piles. It is a constant irritation that comes & goes. My doctor gave me estrogen cream for my vag, & I have upped my HRT but not much help. In fact my doctor was pretty useless & I have had to self diagnose my problem. I can't believe that there is no real treatment for this & that us women have to try & find a way of medicating it ourselves, I'm very annoyed. It was bad enough when I was meonopausal, doctors were totaly useless then. So it seems that women of a certain age are dismissed as not being very important! I could scream!

Now heres an idea, as I haven't bothered having sex for years, do any of you think that it has contributed to my problem? They say that keeping up a good sex life help keep your vag healthy! I would be interested in your opinions. Don't worry I'm not going to start walking the streets at night!

I will continue to try the creams that some of you have mentioned

Ms Monty, another possible solution might be probiotics. If your recent problem started after antibiotics (which destroys the good with the bad bacteria) you may have to build up your natural defenses. Also, avoid sugar and excess carbs which can have a negative impact.

Thanks Beverly, will do. But I did take probiotic after my anti biotics & I'm careful about sugar & carbs.

With honesty to answer your question, I am 63 and I have an active sex life and still suffer similar problems with my vagina

added to the physical problems are the psychological ones of what ailment will come next? Soreness, thrush, urine infection, swelling chaffing   Etc ? It is an on going battle and feels quite debilitating at times

Hi Sue, so having a sex life doesn't change things then.

It does seem that because of our age we have to manage this problem. It's on going & isn't going to be cured. I have found that I just have to manage it & it is better than it was. I have to make sure I'm really careful with my vag now, the skin is so delicate & sensitive, I can't use soap at all, I sit in the bath every day (wish I had a bidet) I pat myself dry. I use K-Y if it feels dry but not to much, if it is too wet I get sore again. If my anus is sore I just use a tiny bit of Sudo cream, but mustn't get it near my vag. I am on half a dose of HRT, so am not using the vagifem.

It's all very disappointing dealing with my problem but this forum has helped a lot. I realise it's not just me. People have been helpful with suggestions. So I suggest you read thru & may get some ideas how to manage your problem which is clearly AV. Good luck Sue, keep us posted.

Thanks for reply. Yes we do need to support each other. Epically with ideas. What a shame when we are retired and have a loving relationship and time to share that our vaginas suffer AV. Can be very upsetting and dibiltating. For me I get relief with one product then after a while I become sensitive to it so it is an on going battle!

That's ok, I kept getting this going through the menapause, now I'm on hrt patches, the best thing ever and I was so determined to do everything naturally, I didn't realise how much my body needed oestrogen, only time will tell

Also to relieve symptoms the doctor can put you on a very low dose of estrogen, it is apparanyly due to the lack of

Yes it's for bacterial vaginitis, not behind the counter, on the shelf near the douches

also eating the natural bio live bacteria yogurts by Rachel and any other well known brand to help keep it at bay, usually half a pot a day, worth a go anyway. Good luck

    hi miss monty

have a look at estriol vaginal cream ... Ovestin..

i am trying this from tomorrow, i am just meno reached and seen a lovely gyno, had lots of ultra sounds, had a 10 years natural peri..

i now struggle with vaginal dryness and abit of hair thinning, always lots in brush,

estriol is the gentle oestrogen option,  doesnt effect the uterine wall, especially for dryness and peri and post meno , protects bones and even breast problems ..

it improves all that dryness and libido apparently ..

i posted a heading about it seeing if anyone else uses it....

And lots of info on the discussion

just a thought it may help you

imhave no lick with natural lubes it just isnt enough...

Thanks Jay, I have already tried estriol, but as I was already on HRT so it didn't help much to be honest. I am now just trying a lube, Yes & K-Y (they are much the same thing) and they are helping much more than anything else so far. We just seem to have to work through all this stuff to see what suits us best. Upwards & onwards!

Hope the Estriol works, Vagifem is also good, same sort of thing. Some sort of hormone replacement does help. Use a lube too I'd suggest.

      Keep us posted.
