    Hello Ladies,

I have just returned from seeing a recommended Urologist, who, believe it or not was delightful and had a sense of humour! Shock, horror! My right kidney is smaller/impaired and both kidneys are scarred from childhood illness. I was born and raised in London during the Big Smog. This I believe has impaired my liver as well. Anyway, the Urologist shook my hand for still being alive. So, the current theory is that because my kidneys aren't working properly, and my immune system is seriously impaired, infections and related problems will occur. I am off next week for a day procedure having a scope inspect my bladder and kidneys closely. I'll report back when the results are in.

Just a note to all ladies born after WWII in London. Please tell your GP/specialists. If you don't know about the Big Smog, London Dec 1952, google it. There is a fantastic article about the issue. This information was not released until 2002.

    Cheers to all,

    Lulu

This is what helped me.For the past 5 years I've been suffering with on and off again painful exterior vaginal itching to the point of skin bleeding. All sorts of tests have come back negative. Ugh. I'm 53 and this has been painful and embarrasing.

My NP thought it was due to lack of estrogen due to a hysterectomy back in 1998. I tried the expensive Premarin and miraculously it went away for over a year. Then it came back with a vengeance. 4 to 5 months of Premarin did nothing this time.

Then last month on an European vacation I got a horrible, unrelated skin rash that over ten days wrapped around my legs. The discomfort of itching forced me to look at home remedies since I was out of the United States and had no other option. I bought tumeric and olive oil and rubbed the paste directly on the rash and no burning. Total relief!! After five days and 7-8 treatments the huge painful rashes went away.

Now home and telling my NP how amazing Tumeric must be she suggested swabbing my vulva area with same paste once a day. Never would have thought of that. So using a cotton ball, I swabbed some olive oil and tumeric on the painful, itchy area and went to bed. Aftet 4 nights, the itchy, burning, painful vaginitis is gone. Just wanted to share this in hopes it might help someone. Tumeric stains so be careful. Good luck.

I wonder if any of these topical remedies are actually absorbed into the blood stream the way hormone cream is? Has anyone researched this idea?

I didn't have sex for over 10 years and then when I tried last year, it hurt like hell and made me bleed from tearing (I am 60).  A lubricant helped a bit but not enough and now my doctor has prescribed Estriol. I've read all the instructions and, as my mum and other close female relatives have had breast cancer, I am worried about using it. I have read many online articles, but the risk of using a topical hormone cream like this is unclear. Eating linseed during menopause sorted out my hot flushes and I have read that linseed oil topically applied in the vagina can work in the same way as Estriol. Has anyone else tried this? Or can give me their thoughts either way?

Of all the things I have tried vitamin e capsules, pierced and rub the oil on the vagina, repairs the skin the best of all.

Carol, linseed oil is definitely a new one to me! I would have though it was poisonous, but I just googled and see it's the same as flaxseed! Who knew??

I am amazed by all these natural remedies people are mentioning. Other than one poster who said her doctor recommended the vit E, I have not heard of any medical people offereng these natural solutions...just hormone creams. I was all set to call my gyno and try the Premarin she recommended, but I am having 2nd thoughts...again. Seems the benefits of that only last while you're using it. No different from the natural remedies other than the possible negative side effects which scare me as I have a sister with breast cancer.

I am trying the vagifem but 3 days in and i am itching which is driving me mad. Does anyone else experience this i am just desperate to get some relief from the soreness so should i just be patient

It's not easy being patient is it Jackie. I've been troubled with V A for a year now. First 2 or 3 months I thought I was just having water infections but in fact it was only one infection. Then after that I was on GYNEST cream for a while. It didn't help. So I have now been on Vagifem tablets twice a week since Xmas. True. Some days are better than others. But over all, I am still suffering. I get sore and uncomfortable and want to wee all the time. Anyway I told the doc a month or so ago that the Vagifem wasn't helping much and she said to keep on using it. But someone gave me the idea to up my dose. So I am going to make an appointment today to see if that's possible. Really fed up with this. It makes me not want to bother doing anything or going anywhere. sad

      Hi Shirley

I too was put on Gynest and then Vagifem and a whole lot of other things, was miserable on all of them.  Moved house and different health area, met new dermatologist and she put me on Ovestin, and Epaderm. The difference is unbelievable, provided I keep putting on the ointments, I am pain free.

Hi Lorna, Great to know you are now pain free. Is Ovestin a tablet like Vagifem and is Epaderm an ointment? Sorry I don't know. I have got an appointment with my doctor next Monday afternoon so perhaps I should mention Ovestin and Epaderm. Are you also free from wanting to wee all the time too? I think this is most irritating too . Again some days are worse than others but after a year of all this, I really need something that gives me permanent comfort. Thanks for getting back to me. :-)

      Shirley

Ovestin is a cream inserted with applicator into vaginal, twice weekly, same idea as Vagifem, but for me, not so harsh, I.e. No bad reaction from the cream and Epaderm is like a thick white Vaseline, used as a barrier to keep all body fluids off the skin., can also be used as a soap substitute.   I have No problems with water works, unless I get. UTI, which I haven't had this year. All is good, however I have just been diagnosed with Colon Cancer, so will be going into hospital shortly to get half my bowel removed. Never rains but it pours.  XX

Thanks for the info Lorna. I have got an appointment with my doctor on Monday afternoon so I will discuss either upping my Vagifem dose or going onto Ovestin and Epaderm instead. So glad you have no problem with your water works. Mine was perfect yesterday but Monday and Tuesday it wasn't good. Really sorry to hear you have just been diagnosed with colon cancer and are having half your bowel removed. Sending hugs to you.

I tried Ovestin (Estriol) and was instructed to use it for two weeks, then twice a week. But almost immediately the side effects were strong - premenstrual type aches and then a bright rash on my abdomen. So I stopped using the cream after 5 days. Has anyone tried using a lower dose and does that make a difference?
