Antibiotic Resistant Prostatits

Good Evening.

Approx. 3 months ago, I had an ear infection that was treated with antibiotics, i.e. Co-Amoxicillin 625mg ( 500 mg Amoxicillin; 125mg clavulanic acid). Almost as soon as the ear infection was over, problems with the prostate started. I started experiencing discomfort in my scrotum, similar to a very cold feeling that would get the scrotum to contract, even at normal temperatures.

Within days of these first symptoms, the discomfort had turned into pain : pardon the colorful expression, but it felt like I had a tennis ball up in my anus. I went to the ER were a doctor performed a digital examination that was not particularly painful, i.e. no releases of pus. According to him, there was no indication of a grave infection.

I was prescribed 100 mg of doxycycline twice a day for 10 days.

The cure was successful in removing the pain and the symptoms. However, they appeared again almost as soon as I finished the course of antibiotics. In addition, I started experiencing new symptoms like a rash on the tip of my penis - treated with a Clotrimazole-based creme.

Blood and/or urine analysis revealed no infections like HIV or STDs.

A subsequent analysis of the sperm revealed the presence of two strains of Streptococcus (Sanguinis and Spp.), the former in excess of 10x6th power UFC/ml. Traces of Enterobacterie spp. where identified. This was accompanied by an analysis to the resistance to the antibiotics. The only resistance was to tetracycline.

Following these exams, I was prescribed Co-Amoxicillin 625mg ( 500 mg Amoxicillin; 125mg clavulanic acid; 2 times a day for 10 days, plus Esomeprazole; 40mg; once a day for 14 days.

Also in this case, as soon as the antibiotic therapy was over, the symptoms reappeared, this time located more on the area of the perineum. I also noted a sensation similar to nerve pain, with pain radiating from the perineum up to the hands and the legs.

I am currently waiting on a second battery of exam performed on the sperm but I am seriously concerned about the overall length of the infection - approx. 3 months - and the long-term consequences to my health, both in terms of prostate, as well as the enormous quantity of antibiotics I have been taking in the past 3 months.

**Any suggestions ref. the possible origin of the infection and - more importantly - ref. the diagnosis, would be very much appreciated. **

I wish to add to this the following facts:

  • I am Caucasian; age between 30 and 40; overweight; normally very healthy. The original ear infection has been the first time I have taken antibiotics in years.

  • Around the same time I was diagnosed with the ear infection, my wife had the same problem. Also, her helicobacter pylori resurfaced after years of absence.

I am inclined to think there is a more systemic cause to these infections, given that they are in all cases bacterial, and they seem to be affecting both myself and my wife, around the same time, and in some cases, even in the same organs.

Thank you.

    Daniel:

I can't really provide much input on your specific questions, but want to ask if you are taking probiotics to counteract the destruction of not only bad bacteria but good gut bacteria.

    Best of luck to you.

      Hello.

I have started though I am not sure how useful it is to simultaneously take probiotics together with the antibiotics. Does it still help? Is it still medically useful?

      From healthline:

"Summary: Taking probiotics during antibiotic treatment can reduce the risk of diarrhea, although the two should be taken a few hours apart. Probiotics can also help restore the gut bacteria after antibiotics."

Whatever you do, don't take Cipro or any similar antibiotics. There are many threads here on this forum about Cipro. Very dangerous. I took it about 1.5 years ago and I am still recovering.

You are fortunate as I first was given it in hospital in 2012 and later by my GP. It caused tendonitis that eventually went but the drug lay dormant in me as it can until a different type of antibiotic was prescribed in 2015. Then I got the full effect of it that caused neuropathy in my lower left and I can no longer walk unaided.

Moral of the story - don't take what doctors say as gospel truth - you have to use your own judgement. From what I've gleaned abx might work for Acute Bacterial Prostatitis but once it's gone Chronic you are likely to do yourself much more harm than good by taking repeated courses. That's a cautionary tale there Derek

Are you saying that antibiotics caused your neuropathy?

I'd say that probiotics are the only game in town. Abx destroy good bacteria in the gut and the urinary system - and then you get the kind of chronic inflammation I've got thanks to Amoxy. these good bacteria may take weeks, months, even years to recover - some strains appear not to come back at all. There is some evidence that probiotics are helpful in restoring good bacteria - one thing I would never do - unless I was in a life threatening situation is take any more abx, especially fluoroquinolones. Rather than think in terms of infections my own highly unfortunate experience has led me to think in terms of dysbiosis - caused by chemical assault

It would appear that they are experimenting with different drugs on a trial and error basis. I would suggest that you seek a couple of different opinions.

Symptoms returning when the antibiotics are finished is a common experience. Google "Antibiotics and prostatitis: a vexed issue" (with the quote marks) to read WHY this happens. Good luck.

Thank you. Do you have any direct experience with this? Do you have any advice? Thanks!
