Tracy it is a lottery, you might have no problems. On the other hand you may indeed suffer with tendon problems. However the gp does not realize that people can end up with damaged eyes, ears, joints, brain, muscle loss, sleep, fatigue and a lot more, a long list. I know cos ive got em. 5 yrs disabled.

Gp is not interested, so I suffer.

Hi Tracy, John is absolutely right - Cipro IS a lottery.  Some people take many courses while others are affected from the first day.  Your doctor is better than most as they generally don't even bother to mention the tendon problem, then when people go back with tendon pain or other issues they shrug and say it can't be the Cipro.

Why it varies so much in how it affects you is down to each individual's genetic make up and medical history - whether they've taken this family of antibiotics before, or other drugs with similar components and many other factors.  The Cipro will, in fact, be affecting you now but the symptoms may not be enough for you to notice.  It might take the whole course, or the next course or just the next tablet until something happens - a lottery!  Headaches, nausea, joint pains and all over pain are usually the first signs.  If you get any hint of any of these - or anything else unusual, please stop taking them.  I'd go a little further and say stop taking them now but I get into trouble for 'panicking' people!

There are safer antibiotics to take but doctors have to have a culture from your urine sample to be sure which one will be most effective so they tend to reach for the cipro as it will kill everything (and cause havoc while it's at it!).

Please take a look at the discussions on this site about Quinolone Toxicity - maybe start here

Your options are to stop taking it and hope it's knocked the infection out; stop taking it and ask your doctor for a safer alternative; or continue with your lottery and cross your fingers.  I can't honestly recommend the latter, I've come across too many people (like John) who are still suffering years later.

You were lucky, you were warned while so many people get no warning and then just brush offs and denials after they find out what has happened to them.

    Take care.
